Description

C. T. MASON.
IGNITION DYNAIVIO. APPLICATION FILED MAY I. ISIG I 1,318,219. Patented Oct. 7, I919.
Z0 Ch arls TZV/Zzson To all whom it may concern:
UNITED STATES CEIAIEtIll-ES THOMAS MASON, 01E SUMTER, SUULEZ Gitltfi" ELECTRICAL COMPANY, OF NEWARK, NEW
JERSEY,
certain new and useful Improvements in Ignition-Dynamos, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to ignition dynamos commonly termed magnctos and specifically to the manner of attaching the 0011-.
ducting cable and safety spark gap member to the generating; coil thereof.
In'my co-pending application, Serial No.
92,196, I liave'shown and described a mag neto of a well known type, having a high tension terminal mounted on the side of the casing of the magneto, and the present invention eliminates the expense of such a terminal and enables the spark plug cable to be connected directly to the winding, thereby eliminating all contacts in the circuit leading to the spark plug or other device.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an end view of the magneto broken away to show the arrangement of the cable connection. Fig. 2 is a side view, with one of the cover plates removed. Fig. 3, is a view of the coil unit. Like figures of reference denote the same parts wherever they are shown. I I
For the sake of illustration, I show the present invention usedin connection with a machine as shown and described in my U. S. Patent #1,081,760, dated December 16,1913. Certain other featl'ires illustrated in the up: pended drawings were disclosed and claimed in connection with my application executed April 8, 1916,.hereinbefore mentioned.
The numeral 1 indicates a suitable cover bent around the field magnet or magnets 2 and secured to the base 3 in any suitable manner, such as by the screws indicated at 4 and 5. This cover together with side plates 6 and 7' completely inclose the magneto, with the exception of the usual interrupter mechanism, which is inclosed by the cap 8 held in position by a suitable cover spring 9, supported on post 10. The two cover plates are bolted together by through bolts, indicated at Hand 12, or in any suitable manner.
On the side plate 7 is mounted an insulat- IGNITION-DYI 'AhIfJ.
Specification of Letters Eat-eat.
Application filed may 1, 191a. Serial ing, a conductor micww ing bushing 13, held thereon in any suit able manner, through. this bushing is the spa cable 142, the inner end 15 of wl may be beveled as shown in Fig. 3, so that the end of the conductor projecting therefrom may be grasped by the over-lapped end 17 of the spark gap member 1%.
The cable and spark gap member being laid across the top of the winding 1.9, the outer end 20 of said winding is brought through the insulating; wrapper thereabout,
and soldered or otherwise connected. to the member 18. The cable is then lashed to the winding by means of a suitable layer of tape indicated at 21. It will be noted that the spark member 18- torms with the core 22, a safety for limiting the potential ot' the current generated by the winding.
It will be seen from the foregoin description that the removal of the side plate cover does not break the electrical connection between the spark plug cable and the wind- V ing; that there are no crushes or other movable contacts in the circuit between said winding and the spark plug; and that the coil 3, forms a generating unit, which may be removed and replaced without breale lug any oi. the high tension electrical connections. v
Having thus described in invention I 1 0 mm:
1. In an ignition dynamo, a unit gener-' "form a safety spark gap with said core,
means connecting); said member to said wind- -=mped to said member and connected u it. rid. winding, and means for securing said member and conductor to said windin bstantially as described.
3. In an I "on dynamo, a frame-work,
a casing including side plates inclesing said within saicl outwardly through one of saifl plates, and
5 means supporting said Winding in saic.
framework whereby it may be removed therefrom as a unit, together. with said attached cable, substantially as (lescribetl 1-; In an ignition dynamo a framework, a casing including side plates inclosing said framework, a stationary core having a high tension generating Winding thereon located Within said casing, a nigh tension conductmg cable connected directly} to said W1ndmg, means lncludmg a cover about said Winding for mechanically securing said cable therctoand means supporting said core and Winding in said framework whereby they maybe removecl as a unit, together with said attached cable.
In testimony whereof I hereunto my signature.
. CHARLES THOMAS MASON.
