VULCANIZIN'G- APPARATUS.
Specification of Ilett ers Patent.
Patented Oct. 7, 1919.
Application filed February 1, 1918. Serial No. 214,966.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK D. Goon- LAKE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vulcanizing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vulcanizing apparatus designed especially for use in connection with the repair of automobile tires, but including a heating device which may be employed for other purposes.
One object is to provide in connection with a suitable framework in which a plurality of burners are mounted, a heating device comprising a hollow element adapted to contain water and removably mounted on the frame, and a series of pivotally mounted clamping devices cooperating with. said heating element.
A further object is to provide a frame in which a plurality of burners are mounted in position for utilizing the apparatus for heating or cooking purposes, a frame connected with the frame first mentioned and adapted to support a tire, a heating ele ment comprising a hollow rectangular casting adapted to contain water, means for regulating the pressure in the heating element, and a plurality of pivotally mounted clamping devices adapted to be swung into position over the casting when the apparatus is employed for vulcanizing purposes.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings;
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation,
Fig. 2 is an end elevation,
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section,
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a spider which may be carried by the frame above each burner. 7
In carrying out my invention, I employ a framework 10 in which are mounted a plurality of burners 12 and 14 having connection with feed pipe 16, supplied from a tank 17 through an upwardly extending pipe 18. Removably mounted on the frame work is a hollow casting 20 having a rectangular upper portion and being rectangular in vertlcal cross section, this element providing a chamber 21, for receiving water supplied through an inlet 22. An outlet for the chamber is shown at 23, and is under the control of a valve 24:.
The pressure within the chamber 21 is regulated automatically and manually by any suitable device of a commercial type shown conventionally at 25, the manually operative arm being designated 26. A steam gage is illustrated and is designated 27.
A tire supporting frame is shown at 30 and is connected with the frame Work at the points 31 and 32. A plurality of clamps 33 each comprise a vertical member 34, and an upper arm 35, the elements 34 being rotatably mounted on the frame at 36. These clamping devices are swung into operative position over the heating element 20 during the vulcanizing operation.
The threaded members 38 carry thumb members 39 on the upper end thereof and plate members 10 on the lower ends.
When it is desired to use the apparatus for ordinary heating purposes, the heating element 20 may be removed and one of the spiders 4L2 placed on the frame above each of the burners. It may be added that the framework includes an upper horizontal portion 11 and a base having legs 13.
What is claimed is:
1. In a device of the class described, a
framework, a plurality of burners mounted therein, the framework being provided with a longitudinal opening above the burners, a removable heating element providing a water chamber and adapted to be carried by the framework above the burners and to fit within the opening, an inlet and an outlet for said chamber, and a plurality of rotatable clamping devices permanently carried by the framework independently of the heating element, one element of each of said clamping devices being movable into position above the upper surface of the heat-- ing element, and a frame connected with the framework first named and adapted to support a tire.
2. In a device of the class described, frame-work comprising a plurality of side members, a plurality of end members, and
From
ing at the upper portion, a plurality of burners mounted in the frame-work, atire supporting frame having its lower ends secured to the framework, a removable heatlng element provlding awa'ter' chamber proportioned to fit within the opening, said frame-work including laterally extending offsets, and a clamping device rotatably 10 mounted on each of the offsets.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
FREDERICK DGOODLAKE.
