Description

A. E. WRIGHT.
TWO-PART CONTAINER AND BLANK THEREFOR. APPLICATION'FILED OCT. 11. ms.
Patented Oct. 7, 1919.

AUGUSTUS E. WRIGHT, OF SOUTHBORO, MASSACHUSETTS,
TWO-PART CONTAINER AND BLANK THEREFOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS E. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Southboro, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Two-Part Containers and Blanks Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates chiefly to containers for merchandise, such as eggs, and has for its object to provide a two-part contalner, each part constituting an independent box adapted to hold a given quantity of merchandise, such as six eggs, the boxes being connected in such a manner that they. may be closed upon each other like a suitcase, and may be detached one from the other to provide two independent boxes, each adapted to contain and retain merchandise.
The invention is embodied in the improve ments which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, formin a part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container embodying the invention, the parts being closed on each other.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing the container opened.
Fig; 3 is a section. on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section through one of the container parts on line 14: of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a plan view .on a reduced scale of a blank embodying the invention.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the figures.
My improved two-part container is composed of two boxes, each comprising a bottom 12, an inner side wall 13, an outer side wall 14, and opposite end walls 15. The two inner side walls 13 are integral with each other, and are creased to form a flexible boxconnecting neck 16, said neck constituting a hinge permitting one box to be closed .upon the other, and being adapted to be severed longitudinally, as indicated at 16 (Fig. 4) to separate thetwo boxes.
The boxes thus connected may be closed upon each other, as shown by Fig. 1, and opened, as shown by Figs. 2 and 3.
The outer side walls 14 have integral extensions 17, flexibly connected with the walls 14, and'forming box covers, said extensions being provided with integral flanges 18, flexibly connected with the free ends of the extens on n a p ed o stan again t the Specification of Letters Patent.
inner sides of the inner side walls 13 and reinforce the latter, as shown by Fig. 3, the
flanges 18 being adapted to bear on the box bottoms 12 to support the free ends of the covers.
The container is preferably made from a blank of relatively thick paper or other suitable material of the form shown by Fig. 5, in which the several dotted lines indicate creases on which the blank i to be bent.
The said blank is both longitudinally and transversely creased, as shown by Fig. 5, and includes an elongated body portion which is composed of inner sidewall-forming portions 13, joined together by a hinge formed by the central transverse crease, the longi tudinal bottom-forming portions 12, joined to and projecting oppositely from the inner side-wall-forming portions, the longitudinal outer-side-wall forming portions 14, joined to and projecting oppositely from the bot tom-forming portions, the two rectangular cover-forming portions 17, joined to and projecting oppositely from the outer sidewall-forming portions, and the flange-formmg portions 18, joined to and projecting oppositely from the cover-forming portions. The blank also includes two pairs of wings projecting from opposit longitudinal edges of the body portion, there being one pair of wings at each longitudinal edge. Said wlngs are composed of the end-wall-forming portions 15, joined to and projecting oppositely from the bottom-forming portions 12, and the angular tongue 20 projecting oppositely from the end-wall-forming portions 15, and adapted to enter slots 21 cut in the wall-forming portions 13 and 14:.
In setting up the container, the blank is bent along the creases indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 5, to erect the wallforming portions 13, 14 and 15, and the tongues 20 are bent to overlap the side walls thus formed and inserted in the slots 21, to maintain the side walls perpendicular to the bottoms 12, said tongues reinforcing the side walls. Each of the two boxes thus formed may now be charged with eggs or other merchandise, the covers 17 being displaced as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3.
When the container is used to hold eggs,
each box may be provided with the usual Patented Oct. 1919.
Application filed .October 11, 1918. Serial No. 257,775.
boxes and resting against the inner side walls 13 and the bottoms 12.
The two boxes may be closed upon each other, as shown by Fig. 1, the container constituting a compact package adapted to hold, for example, twelve eggs. The covers 17 constitute a two-part septum between the two boxes, and the cover flanges 18 reinforce the side walls 13 and resist pressure tending to crush the container. In case a customer wishes only six eggs, the neck 16 is severed, by a knife or otherwise, to separate the boxes, the; contents of each box being protected by the cover 17 and its flange 18.
The blank may be sold to a retail merchant as an article of manufacture, and converted into a container by the merchant.
I claim:
A one-piece elongated blank of sheet material for a container, transversely and longitudinally creased as shown, and composed of an elongated body portion and two pairs of Wings projecting from opposite longitudinaledges of the body portion, there being" one pair of wings at each longitudinal ed e, said bod portion including two rectangu ar inner si e-wal-l-forming portions joined together by a hinge formed by the central transverse crease, two rectangular bottom- .formlng portions joined to and projecting oppositely from the inner side-wa forming portions, two rectangular outer side-wallformlng portions joined to and projecting oppositely from the bottom-forming portions, the said inner and outer wall-forming angular tongues projecting oppositely from the end-wall-forming portlons and adapted to enter said slots, the said blank when erected forming a two-part container com-- prising two box bottoms, two slotted inner side walls united by a hinge-forming severable neck, two slotted outer side walls, four end walls carrying said ton es and united by the latter to the slotted lnner and outer side walls, and flanged covers for said boxes.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
- AUGUSTUS E. 'WRIGHT.
