Description
w. J. BAILEY. AUTOMOBILE ALARM.
APPLICATION FILED APR. I5, I91].
Patented Oct. 7, 1919.

gases therein; The release of such gases and consequent operation of the alarm may be controlled from the dash or steering post orfrom any other convenient part of the car.
AnOther'Ob ect of my invention is the provision of means for blocking the valve 1n openposition, which is advisable when the car is left on the roadway unattended and non-operating.- The effect of the valve be ing blocked open under such circumstances is to give an alarm as soon as the engine is started, and in the event of the same being started by a person designing to steal the car the operation of the engine blows the alarm and thus the legal custodiatior:
the car is notified of the attempt to steal the same.
Another object of my invention is to utilize the priming cup boring of a cylinder for the connection of the alarm valve and to make provision in a convenient place in connection with said valve to utilize the priming cup taken from its boring.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent in the description taken in connection with the drawings ofwhich Figure 1 is a side elevation of my alarm attached to one of the cylinders of an automobile;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation view of my valve showing the connection for the priming cup;
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of my valve;
Fig. 5 is a cross section of the same taken along the lines 5-5 of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is a cross section taken along the lines 6-6 of Fig. 3, this figure showing the valve in blocked position.
Referring now in detail to the drawings 1 represents an alarm, whistle or horn and 2 is the valve through which the same is operated. This valve consists of a casing specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oct. '7, 191a Application filed April 16, 1917. Serial at. $162,276;
3 a valve stem 4 provided with a valve head 7 This valve head is normally held in the valve seat 8 by reason of the action of the spring 9 acting between the top of the casing- 3 and the pin 15 projecting from the sides of the valve stem 4 at its upper end. The valve stem 4 is so fitted in the casing, 3 as to provide a space 10 between the valve stem and the casing, which space communicates with the conduit 11 which in turn communicates with the alarm 1. The valve" is provided with a bifurcated lug, 12 whiclrrockably' supports the rocker arm 13 having the angle piece 14 integral therewith. v
The valve is fitted into a cylinder of an automobile engine by removing the priming cup which connects with such cylinder and screwingthe valve inits place as is shown in'Fig. I have provided a coupling 16 connecting the same with the valve assembly forthe purpose ofihaving screwed there- 111 13118 priming cupremoved from the cylinder for the purpose of attaching the valve thereto. In Fig. 1 "my device is shown in operative position, the priming cup being designated as The device is operated from the dash, steering post or other conthrough the valve through the conduit 11 and into the alarm 1 thus sounding the same.
When a car embodying my device is left unattended with the power shut off, the ring 19 is manually moved from the position shown in Fig. 4 to the position shown in Fig. 6, which holds the lever 14 away from the lug 12 and causes the rocking lever 13 to depress the valve stem 4 and hold the valve head 7 away from its seat, thus maintaining while the ring is in this position open communication between the cylinder of the engine to which the device is attached and the alarm whistle or horn 1. It will readily be seen that upon starting the engine while the ring 19 is in the position shown in Fig. 6 that gases passing from the cylinder to which the said device is attached will be forced between the valve head and valve seat through the conduit 11 and into the sounding element 1, and thus give an alarm that the motor has been started. If the motor has been started by some one not authorized to start the same, the alarm is intended for the owner or person charged with the possession of the car, who can then promptly act accordingly. 7
' In order to remove the ring from the position shown in Fig. 6, the ring is manually shifted over the projection or nose 20, over the lever 14 to the position shown in Fig. 4 where it is held at the bottom of said lever by the enlarged portion at the end thereof. hen the ring has been moved to this position, the valve head 7 is seated so that no gases are permitted to communicate with the sounding device 1 until the cord 18 attached to the lever 14 is pulled to depress the valve head 7.
In the above description and the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferable embodiment of my invention but I do not wish to be confined to the disclosure therein contained, but what I desire to cover by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.
Claims:
l. In an automobile alarm, a sounding device having a housing, a valve stem, a valve head integral with said valve stem, and a valve seat, said valve head being normally seated in said valve seat, a lug connected With said housing, an angle rocker arm rookably supported in said lug, one end of said angle rocker arm being adapted to Copies of this patent may be obtained for depress said valve stem and unseat said valve head, a shiftable ring on sald angle rocker arm adapted to be positioned between said lug and the elbow of said rocker arm and thereby hold the said valve head in unseated position, said angle rockerarm being enlarged at one end so as to prevent said shiftable ring from falling therefrom.
2. In an automobile alarm, a sounding de vice having a housing, a valve stem, a valve head integral with said valve stem, and a valve seat, said valve head being normally seated in said valve seat, a lug connected with said housing, an angle rocker arm rockably supported in said lug, one end of said angle rocker arm being adapted to depress said valve stem and unseat said valve head, a sliiftable ring on said angle rocker arm adapted to be positioned between said lug and the elbow of said rocker arm and thereby hold the said valve head in unseated position, and a projection extending from said angle rocker arm for the purpose of holding said ring against easy manipulation on said angle rocker arm when said ring is positioned between the elbow, said angle rocker arm and said lug, said angle rocker arm being enlarged at one end so as to prevent said shiftable ring from falling therefrom.
