EUGENE F. PRATHER, 0E E'AeL-E'rTE, ARKANSAS.
V WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EUGENE F. FEATHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eaglette, in the county of Dallas and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches particularly to those types of wrenches employing means for permitting quick and positive adjustment of the jaws thereof and it is the principal object of the invention to provide a wrench having a novel form of adjustment operable by the handle whereby the movable jaw of the same, when adjusted, will be securely held against undue movement, but which, when desired, can be quickly released and moved to other positions.
' Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The improvements in the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, when considered in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained wherein a preferred embodiment of the in vention is set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved wrench having a part thereof broken away and shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section therethrough taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a similar section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Having more particular reference to the drawings, in connection with which like reference characters will designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the improved wrench includes an adjustable jaw 1 having an opening 2 formed in one portion thereof in which a pawl 8 is arranged, for a purpose which will be subsequently described. Extending from the jaw 1 is a shank member 4, the outer end of which is curved and has connection with a handle member 5 by means of the loop 6 connected with the shank as at 7 and ex- Eending about a portion of said handle mem- A pivoted jaw 8 is'provided and carries a shank 9, the outer side of which is providedwith a series of ratchet teeth 10, while the inner end of the same is connected to a yoke Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented'Oct. '7, 191 9.
Application medians e, 1918. Serial No. 238,515.
11 as at 114, which yoke, as will be noted,
passes about a portion of the shank 4t and is of the. shank 9.
In this connection, it is to be noted that the shank 9 passes through the opening 2 formed in the jaw 1 and has the various ratchet teeth formed thereon positioned for engagement with the pawl 3carried by the adjustable jaw adjacent said opening 2.
In using my improved wrench, to adjust the jaw 1 with relation to the jaw 8, the latter is swung upon its axis 11 thereby disengaging the ratchet 10 carried by the shank 9 from the pawl 3, thus permitting sliding movement of the shank 4 and the aw 1 arranged thereon. VVhen the jaws have been properly positioned, the adjacent ratchet tooth is engaged with the pawl .3 and the jaws applied to the object in such manner that the turning movement of the jaws tends to firmly hold the pawl 13 in engagement with the ratchet teeth.
Manifestly the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my claims, I consider within the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. A wrench including an adjustable jaw having an opening therein, a pawl formed on the wall of said opening, a shank extending from the jaw, a pivoted jaw arranged adjacent the adjustable jaw, a shank carried by the pivoted jaw extending through the opening in the movable jaw, ratchet teeth carried by the shank of the pivoted jaw arranged to coact with the pawl and prevent separation of the jaws when the latter are engaged and turned in one direction upon an object, turning movement: of the jaws in the opposite direction tending to disengage the pawl from the teeth and perthe wall of said opening. a shank extending from the jaw, a pivoted jaw arranged adjacent the adjustable jaw, a shank'ca'rried by the pivoted jaw extending through said opening ratchet teeth carried by the shank of the pivoted jaw and arranged to coact with'said pawl'and prevent separation of the jaws when the latter. are engaged and turned in one direction upon an object, turning'movement of the jaws in the opposite direction tending to disengage the pawl from the teeth and permit adjustment of the adjustable jaw, a handle member hav- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for ing the inner terminal curved to permit swinging movement of the pivoted jaw and arranged between the adjacent terminals of the jaw shanks, a yoke secured to the handle,
arranged about the shanks and pivotally engaged with the shank of the pivoted jaw, and a loop connected to the outer end of the first mentioned shank and engaged about the handle.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature hereto.
