GAG AND STOCK-RELEASE FOR PUNCHINGMACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 30, 1919- Application filed October 14, 1916. Serial No. 125,556.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORTON G. HUTCHIN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Voodbury, in the county of Gloucester, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Gag and Stock -Release for Punching-Machines, of which the following is a specification. I I v 7 My invention relates to punching machines and machines of a similar character, and consists more particularly in the novel construction and the novel arrangement of a gag and of a punchstock and novel means for controlling and actuating thegag and Oneobject of my present invention is to devise novel means to enable the punch employed in conjunction with a gag machine of the ordinary type to rest lightly on the material to be punched after the punching of each hole. A lever or other controlling means is employed to effect the actuation of the main gag and to also control the stockrelease, and such lever is designed to be actuated by means best suited tothe conditions met with in practice, and while for purpose of illustration I have shown it as being adapted to be manually actuated, it may be automatically or mechanically actuated, as desired.
'A'further object of my invention is to devise novel means for balancing the punch stock.
A further object of my invention is to devise a novel construction of punch (stock, a novel construction of punch head, a novel construction of stock release, a novel construction of a punch stock guiding device, and novel meansfor actuating such devices.
Other novel features of construction and advantage will hereinafter more clearly appear in the detailed description of my inven' tion.
:F or the purpose of illustrating my invention, 'I have shown in the accompanying drawing a typical embodiment of it which in practice willgive satisfactory and reliable results. It is of course to be understood that this embodiment is typical only and that the sired source of power.
various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a punching or similar machine in conjunction with which a novel gag and stock release embodying my invention is employed.
Fig. 2 represents a front elevation, partly broken away, of a portion of the machine.
Fig.3.is a detail View taken at right angles to Fig. 2 and showing some of the parts in section and other parts in elevation.
Fig. l represents a plan view of a spring yoke employed.
Fig. 0 represents in perspective and .in
detached position the gag.
' F ig. 6 represents a side elevation of the punch stock. Y
Fig. 7 represents in perspective and in detached position the stock release and certain of its adjuncts.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates the frame or housing of the punching machine, which is constructed to form a yoke 2, and a standard 3, in which latter is journaled a driving shaft 4, which is adapted to be driven by means of any de The driving shaft 4: is provided with an eccentric 5, which effects the reciprocation of the punch ram 6 in the usual manner. The upper end of the punch ram isprovided in the usual manner with an extension, see dotted lines in Fig. 1, which effects the raising at the proper timev and in the ordinary well known manner of the punch head 7 which reciprocates between the guides 8, to which latter are connected the strips 9 in any desired manner.
The lower end of the ram 6 preferably terminates in a head or impact member 10, preferably rounded, and which is normally guided within an aperture 11 in the head 7, the bore of said aperture at the upper end being of greater diameter, as at 12, .and of reduced diameter at its lower end, as indicated at 13. 14 designates the gag, which is provided at its bottom withthe laterally eX tending guideeflanges 15 -on :opposite. sides of the gag and the upper face of thegag is preferably of a concaved contour, as inclicated-at The head 7 in proximity to the bore 12 of greater diameter istransversely recessed, as at 17 in order to receive the guide flanges 15 of the gag 14,
18 designates my novel punch stocli, which isprovidedatits upper end with an enlarged and preferably cylindrical head 19 and such head is preferably integral with'a plunger 20 of a reduced diameter which terminates in a threaded extension2l-of less diameter than the plunger 20. The head 19 of thepun'ch'stock has a workingfit in the bore 12 and the in the bore' 13.
22 deslgnates a spring yoke having a" cenplunger 20 has a working fit trally located aperture 23 therein of any desired contour and the arms of theyoke-are PlOVlClGCl wlth the hooks24 to WlIlCh are connected the springs 25, the upper ends of said springs-being secured to hooks'26 carried by a fixed portion of the fraine-work. The
threaded: extension 21 of the punch stock is adapted topass' through the aperture 23 and to receive/the punch or die 27"which is 'conne'cted'to the threaded extension 21 by means of a nut 28. 29 designatesa guide or stripper'between which-and the uide blocks 30 is placed the material 31 to be punched. 32 designates a stock release =which comprises a plate or block 33, the forward end of which is'recessed at 34 to conform to. the' contour of the plunger'QO of the punch stock,
andatthe sides of such recess the frontend is angularly faced ofi' as at 35.
36 designates a'rodi having at one end a hub 37 provided with pins 38, which pass into the bifurcated rear end of the block33,
inent with a lever 42, the lower end ofwvhich is fulcrumed in a bracket 43.
44 designates a spring interposed between the'collar 40 and the'rear end of the stock release block The free end of the rod'36 is. threaded to receive a nut45. The gag 14 has connected therewlth a bifurcated rod 46, which receives the lever 42 and: is connected therewith by means of a pin 47, which passes through a slot 48 in said lever 42.
V 49 designates. an actuating handle connected with the lever 42. V J V l he'operation of my novel gag and stock release will now be readilyapparent to, those skilled in this art, and isas follows:
In the position of the parts seen in Figs.
raised and lowered.
1,2 and 3, the gag and stock release are in position for punching the hole. The driving "shaft 4, is continuously revolved. [On the downwardmovementof the punchiam 6, the
guide 29 which is in alinement with the holes of the punch inv the material 31 rests lightly on thezmaterial tobe punched and as the head 7 moves downwardly, thegag 14.
is brought intocontact' with the head 19 of the punch stock so: that on a predetermined vdownward movement, the punch stock is ad vanced an d the hole is punched in the materlal. During the downward strokeof the hea d i' as soonas: the lower end of the head 19 of the stock is above the laterally extend 111g aperture 50 in the -l1'ead*7,--see Fig.2, the
spring-44 wilfcause the-stock release to cmove inwardly beneath the head 19.
" On" the rearward or up-stroke of'the head '7-and the'fram 6, the punch stock remains H1: -113Sf lowermost pos tion until the stock release 33 engages the under face of the" head 19, whereupon the punch stocl'r is'raised.
The operatorv then moves the'lever 42" outwardly; thereby allowing the "punch-stock tomove' downwardly in the punch head 7,
sothat the-diew-illbebrought into close proximity with the holes to be punched, fwi-ll rest upon the plate to be'punched, and
will be accurately alined -with respect to the hole to be punched. This outward movement ofthelever 42 also withdraws the gagl4 so" that the forwardbr-downward stroke of the'ram'G is ineffective to perform thepu-nching operation since there is no operative connection between th'e he l 10 of the punch-ram and the punch stock.
' It will beunderstoo'd from the foregoing that the punch head '7' is slidably mounted for verticahmovement and it is maintained in its uppermostposition by meansQof a -weighted lever'which isconnected bya link to the punch jhead in" the usual manner.
"The punch ramp is mounted on the cam shaft '4 so that as thecam shaft 4 revolves, the "punch 1' ram 6 ;-is continuously being If the gag 14 is moved outwardlythrough the medium of the handle-49,- then the punch 'ram 6 simply recip hrocates a ve'rtical path and the i'punch head 7 remains in lt'sfnormally uppermost position.
When however, the handle 49, lever 42,
vgag 14, andtheir adjuncts are moved'in wardly soathat the parts assume the-posh tion "seen'ln-Figs. l and13, it will be ap parent that' when the punch'ram' "6 is moved downwardly, its h'ead lO, will engage the concave upper face 16 of'the gag'14, which is'now interlocked'with the punch-head? i and in the path of the downward movement of said punch ramJ The continued downward movement of the punch ram 6,f( a swill be understood from Fig. '2) will move downwardly iniunison the gag: 1a and the apparent that a further downward movement of the punch ram 6, head 10, gagl l, and their adjuncts, will force the punch stock 18 downwardly, constituting the power stroke of the punch, and the punch 27 will be forced through the material 31 to be punched. Through the medium of the springs 25, the yoke 22 and the stock release 32, the punch stock 18 is withdrawn as the punch head 7 recedes, as will be evident to those skilled in the art.
It will be apparent that in accordance with my present invention, I provide a novel construction of a stock release and a single instrumentality for eflt'ecting the actuation of the gag and the stock release.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful gag and stock release for punching machines, which embod ies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while I have, in the present instance, shown and described a typical embodiment thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
