To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, EWALD G. BAUM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Natick, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Ether-Cone, of which the f ollowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to medical appliances. More in particular it relates to means for giving anesthetic applications to patients, and relates directly to what is known Y in the medical scienceas an ether cone.
An object of the invention is to provide an apparatus to be-used in administering anesthetics to patients for the purpose of putting them to sleep for surgical operations or other medical attention.
Another object of the invention is to provide a surgical device or ether cone to be used inparticular for administering ether. Itis a primary purpose of the invention to design an ether cone which may be quickly7 assembled and disassembled and which will comprise a set of metal fittings use d in connection with certain ether administering means so that the portions of the appliance which come in contact with the patient may be thrown away oi destroyed after use, while the permanent metal fittings will be sterilized and retained for continual use.
Vith the above and other objects in view the invention has relation to a certain combination and arrangement of parts, an eX- ample of which is described in the following specification, pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring now more in particular to the drawings, the numeral 6 points out a conically-shaped paper form with open top and open bottom with a section 5 cut from one side of the larger end. The paper form will be manufactured of any appropriate light weight pasteboard or other material, and will be shaped into a partially flat form as shown in the sectional view 3 when astaken upon the sembled. In use the paper form is placed upon the patients face inclosing the nose and mouth, and the opening 5 is provided to t over and around the patients nose.
A cloth cover 7 sewed up in a shape substantially the saine as the paper form is adapted to be slipped over the paper form with the lower ends of the cloth cover turned upwardly on the inside of the paper form as designated by the numeral 8. The upper end of the cloth cover will terminate flush with the open end of the paper form.
The cloth cover and paper form are placed one over the other with the lower` extremity of the cover punched or placed upwardly into the form and placed over the patients face. The patient inhales and eXhales into the paper form and cloth cover assembly. After use the paper part is discarded or burned up to insure thoroughly antiseptic conditions, and the cloth cover is washed,
boiled or otherwise sterilized for further use.
A metal absorbent container 9 shaped conically to conform to the paper form and with open ends, is inserted in the upper portion of the paper form. This absorbent container is filled with loosely packed absorbent cotton or other suitable material whichwill hold ether or other anesthetics. The upper portion of the absorbent container is reduced slightly in diameter.
A valve tube 10 is inserted through the open end of the assembly with a grooved valve seat 11 engaging the reduced neck or opening of the absorbent container 9. The valve tube 10 and the absorbent container may be soldered together so as to form a unitary structure. The valve seat 11 is formed in the tube by spinning a groove into the light metal tube, or by otherwise forming it therein.
An inhaling valve comprising a ball 14 is carried in the lower portion of the valve tube 10 and confined therein by inwardly turnedy ears 15 which are punched in from the wall of the tube. The ears confine the inhaling valve in the lower portion of the valve tube and adjacent the valve seat 11. The lower portion of the valve tube is swaged out along the wall thereof from the lower end of the tube upwardly to the valve seat. This provides air openings 16 between the ball and the valve tube. Thus when the ball is in normally downward position air can be inhaled through the appliance by passing downwardly past the ber, orV other material, is provided with a v funnel neck 19. rThe lower portion ofthe funnel neck 19 is flared out conical-shaped 'and provided as a fabric retaining cap 20. 'The neck of the funnel is fitted over the valve tube and the lfabric retaining cap 20 pushed down upon the fabric holding it in tight and immovable position thereupon.
YWhen the several parts of the device are assembled the V.whole structure forms a substantial and composite dev-ice. The fabric retaining cap is compressively engaged with the cloth which imparts a pressure to the cloth and paper form thus tightly clamping the cloth and paper form between the retaining cap 2O and the absorbent container 9.

The device can be quickly taken apart,
`and the paperand absorbent elements there- -of destroyed or burned, while the cloth cover and metal fittings comprising the absorbent container, valve, tube, and ether funnel will be sterilized and preserved for further use.
This form of medical appliance will lill a long-felt want for a dependable and sanitary anesthetic administrator. The device is extremely light in weight, simple to use and inexpensive to manufacture.
The' paper cone and cloth cover may be put together and used as an ordinary closed cone in an emergency without inserting the metal parts. This may be done where the metal parts are not accessible for use.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

An anesthetic administrator, comprising` in combination; a conically shaped paper form, a means for holding absorbent material in the paper form, a valve tube inserted within the paper form and associated with the means, an inhaling valve contained within the valve tube, and a funnel attached to the valve tube.
5. An anesthetic administrator, comprising in combination, a conically shaped paper form, a conically shaped cloth cover placed over the paper form, a device for holding absorbent material in the paper form, a valve tube inserted within the paper form and connected with the device, and an inhalingvalve. .within the valve tube.
