  • This invention has relation to signaling; devices for motor vehicles, or the lilac, and has for its object to provide signaling devices in duplicate, each adapted for connection to the motor vehicle at the forward and rearward portions thereo t, and embodying a movable element in the nature of a pointer, operable by electrically controlled means whereby the driver of the vehicle may cause the pointers to be directed simultaneously toward the right or the left to indicate to the occupants of approaching or following vehicles, the direction in which the vehicle bearing the signals is about to turn.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD 1 Marcus, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automob.ile-Sig11als, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to signaling; devices for motor vehicles, or the lilac, and has for its object to provide signaling devices in duplicate, each adapted for connection to the motor vehicle at the forward and rearward portions thereo t, and embodying a movable element in the nature of a pointer, operable by electrically controlled means whereby the driver of the vehicle may cause the pointers to be directed simultaneously toward the right or the left to indicate to the occupants of approaching or following vehicles, the direction in which the vehicle bearing the signals is about to turn.
Another object of the invention is to provide signaling devices for automobiles having the above named characteristics, and embodying a novel arrangement of a stationary energizable field magnet, and an encrgizahle armature movable adjacent thereto, and means controllable by the driver for actuating said elements simultaneously and in a proper manner for the purpose of cansing movement of the armature in either direction, according to the direction'in which the energizing current is admitted to the elements whereby a pointer connected to said armature may be directed toward the right or the left.
in addition to the foregoing, my invention comprehends improvements in the de tails of construction and or angemcnt of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.

With reference to the drawings, 10 indicates a cylindrical casing adapted to hodisposcd in an upright position, and which is closed by a pcrnmncntly fixed head ll, at its lower end, and a removable cover 12 at its upper end. Within the casing is iicld magnet 13 composed of a plurality of anuular laminations having inwardly and oppositely disposed extensions forming pole pieces i l, and 15. The laminations are held in alined relation through the medium of bolts 16 said bolts serving also to secure in place a transverse strip 17, provided at its intermediate portion with a bearing 18. The lower end 11 of the cylindrical casing is formed with a bearing ill in alincmcnt with the aforesaid bearing 13, and an armaturc designated g 'cncrallv at 90, is mounted upon a shaft 531 which extends through said bearings, and with its upper end 0):- tcndcd beyond and extcriorly of the rcmow able cap 12 of the cylinder. The armature 20 is of'the double opposed pole type, the poles thereof being indicated at 22 and 23, and the wiring of said armature consists of a single strand which is secured in an electrical connection at 94 to one of the pole pieces o'f'the armature, while the opposite end is electrically connected to a commutator 25 mounted upon the shaft 21 intcriorly of the casing and upon the lower end of said shaft. "The connnutator 25 is in the nature oi a continuous ring mm annular metallic member insulated from the shalt through the medium of an insulated bushing 26. Extending radially, is a bushing 2 7 insulated from the casingthrough the medium of an insulaled bushing the inci'ulllr: bushing 27 being: hollow Llor-tho reception oi a brush member 29 which is slidahly mounted within the bushing 27 and is adapted to engage at one end the circuit of the commutator 25, the bushing 27 at its opposite end being provided with a plug 30 having threaded engagement Within the bushing, and a spring 31 is interposed between the inner end of said bushing and said plug whereby said plug maybe held in engage ment with the commutator.

the outline of a hand with the index finger extended, said pointer being indicated at 32, and provided with a vertically extending rod 33 provided with a socket 3% at its lower end in which to receive the projecting end of the shaft 21. A set screw 35 having threaded engagement in the lower end of the rod 33 is adapted to engage the shaft to retain the pointer in fixed relation. The aforesaid connecting strip 17 is extended beyond the side of the casing exteriorly thereof to form an extension 36 and which is formed with an aperture to receive the vertical stud 37, secured to the tubular extension through the medium. of nuts 38 having threaded engagement with the stud and disposed against the upper and lower sides of he extension whereby the stud is held in permanent fixed relation. A. coil spring 38 is connected at one end to the aforesaid stud 37 and at its opposite end. to the projecting end of the shaft 21, in such a manner that a rotative movement of said shaft in either -direction will place the spring under strain thereby urging the shaft toward its former position.

A double pole reversing switch indicated at do is mounted upon the steering col umn 4-6 of the vehicle and is provided with the usual cen tral opposite contacts 47 and 48. The conductor 43 is connected to the contact 47 by the conductor 53 and the contact 48 is con nected to the source of current 59 by a lead 54 which has one terminal joined to one of the terminals of the battery. The op positc terminal of the battery is connected to aconductor 55 which is ioined to the conductor 44s lead 58, from the conductor 56 is connected to the contact l9 of the switch and the opposite contact 50 of the switch is connected by a lead 60 to the conductor 57, Directly opposite to the contacts 49 and 50, on the reversing switch are the contacts 51 and 52 electrically connected to the contacts 50 and 49 respectively, in the usual manner. The conductor 56 connects the brushes 29 together and the conductor 57 connects the casings oi the device and since the armature coil is connected with. the arma ture pole, the armature coil will thus be grounded through the casing of the device. It will be obvious that reversing of the switch will cause a reversal of the current in the connecting conductors 56 and 57. it will be noted that the reversal of current will occur only in the armature.

bearing mounted on said strip, a shaft n'iouuted in the bearing, a radially movable brush mounted in the casing in insulated relation thereto, a plain ring connnutator mounted on the shaft for engagement by said brush, an armature Winding having one terminal connected to the ring and the other grounded to the shaft, a stud mounted on the extension of the strip, a coil spring having one terminal connected to the stud and the other rigidly connected to the shaft, and an indicating hand mounted on the shaft.
