1,317,060. pec fic of Letters Patent- Iatented Sept. 23, 1919.
' Application Med May 18, 1919. Serial No. 296,917.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Fnnonnrox W. Wrrrnowsxna citizen of the United States, rcsiding at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a toy figure in which the parts constituting the frame or body thereof are ofsuch material and con struction as to permit of the same being shaped to produce the caricature of a human being, or of various animals.
"The object of the invention is to produce a toy of this character which shall be of a novel but simple construction, which may be readily converted to resemble a man or different species of animals and which will maintain itself in an upright position.
Other objects and advantages will present themselves as the nature of the invention is betterunderstood, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view of a toy representing the caricature of a man, in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating the frame of the toy, or the toy as illustrated in Fig. 1 with the clothing removed.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the toy in the form of the caricature of a cat.
Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the toy representingthe cancature of a rat.
Fig. 5-is an approximately central longitudinal sectional view through the device illustrated in Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a detail view partly in section and partly in elevation taken longitudinally through the head portion of the figure disclosed in Fig. 3 and partly through one of the foot members thereof.
The head portionof the toy is made in various designs, and as the toy is primarily designed to create amusement the head, in each instance caricatures a human being or animal. The head is constructed of wood, and is designated by the numerals 1 in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The head 1 at the outer portion thereof above the mouth is provided with an orifice 2 to receive the reduced end 3 of a plug 4-which represents the nose of the figure The head, at the neck portion thereof is likewise provided with an aperture 5 to receive the neck pro er, which is designated by the numeral 6. e neck 6 is constructed of bendable heavy wire.
The neck 6 is screwed, soldered or otherwise secured to the center of the shoulder plate 7 which isconstructed of solid metal. The arms 8 have one of their ends pivoted, soldered or otherwise secured to the ends of the shoulder plate 7. The arms 8 are constructed of medium light wire. Centrally secured to the shoulder plate 7 is the spine 9 which is constructed of heavy wire, and centrally secured to the outer end of the spine is the hip plate 10 which is constructed of solid metal. To the outer ends of the hip late 10 are secured the leg members 11 an 12, the same being constructed of medium weight wire, and to the lower ends of the said leg portions are connected the feet 13 and 1 which are constructed of lead or other heavy material. If desired, and preferably the legs are removably connected to the feet; All of the elements constituting the frame, except the feet '13 and 14, and the hands 15 and 16 which are connected to the arms 8 and the shoulder and hip plates, are bendable, and as a matter of fact the last mentioned plates, while arched in plan are also susceptible to bending should it be found desirable to shape the same to better represent the subject desired. In Fig. 1 the figure is draped, being provided with a suit, collar and hat, and the figures representing the cat and rat are designed to be likewise draped or covered.
The hands on the figure illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 are constructed of wood or metal and may be detachable. The weighted feet 13 and 14: retain the figure in an upright position, and by bending the arms, legs and neckthereof the figure may be made to assume various natural or grotesque positions.
The construction illustrated in the remaining figures is similar to that above described. The head member, designated by the numeral 17 in Fig. 3 is detachably connected to the neck portion of the frame, while in all instances the spine plate 10 is centrally provided with an aperture desi ed, in the construction illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 to receive the tail members 18 and 19 of the animals represented by the said figures. The head 20 of the figure representing the rat in Fig. 4 is provided with a socket to receive the neck portion of the frame. The spine 9 is straightened to arrange the shoulder and hip plates at approximately a' right angle thereto in the construction illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, and the arms, or upper limb members 8 are likewise bent to provide the fore legs of the animals illustrated. In a like manner the legortions 11 and 12 are bent to the proper ang e to represent-the rear legs of the animals. The feet 13 and 14, as previously stated, may be removable as may be the hand portions illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, and these, when the device is made up to represent animals may be replaced by similar elements that are better formed to represent the front and rear paws of the animals.
It is thought, from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings, the simplicity of the construc- 1 tion and the advantages thereof will be readily apparent without further detailed-description.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. A toy comprising in the construction of the frame thereof a bendable shoulder plate, a bendable head plate, a bendable element comprising :a splne connecting said plates, bendable elements comprising the limbs of the toy, secured to the ends of the respective platesa flexible neck connected centrally to the s oulder piate and a removable head connected to sald neck.
a 2. A to comprising in the construction of the be y thereof, a shoulder plate, a hip plate, a bendable element comprising a spine connecting said plates, bendable elements comprising the limbs of the toy secured to the ends of the respective plates, weighted members on the ends of the said limbs, a flexible neck connected to the shoulder plate, a removable head connected to said neck, and the hip plate having a central opening therein designed to receive a removable flexible element constituting the tail of the toy.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. FREDERICK W. W'ITTKOWSKI.
