STORAGE- BATTERY-FILLING VENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLARENCE W. HAZE- Ln'rna citizen of the United States, residing at Lakewood, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Storage-Battery-Filling Vents, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactdescript10n.
This invention relate to electric batterice and is a continuation of m application filed September 23, 1916, erial No. 121,720.
It is common practice to incase. storage battery elements in rubber jars and to inclose the top with an appropriate cover such as hard rubber which usually is sealed in with pitch or bituminous material. It is necessary to add electrolyte or water to the cell, from time to time, and therefore a re movable stopper or closure is provided which usually consists of a vent plug threaded into the cover. It is considerable trouble to thread and unthread the removable vent plug, as a number of revolutions are necessary to complete the operation. Also the threads are liable to be jammed or stripped by careless insertion of the plug. That is, if the plug is not held exactly central with the threaded hole it will screw into the cover with the threads crossed and not in perfect mesh, because the material of the cover and plug are sufliciently My invention aims to overcome these and other difficulties.

In the drawings the usual jar 1 is shown inclosing the component parts of the cell with which the cover 2 cooperates to retain the parts in position. The specific form of the (:"over is not of importance as far as this invention is concerned, and only the part cooperating with the vent plug is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In these figures the cover 2 has arcuate cam surfaces 3 and 4 on the underside, which cooperate with arms 5 and 6 on a vent plug 8 to close the filling opening 8 in the cover 2.
The vent plug has wings 9 and 10 preferably arranged in parallel direction with the arms 5 and 6, to permit ready insertion of the plug through the hole 8 which is provided with slots 11 and .12 to receive the arms 5 and '6 which preferably have cam surfaces fitting the cam surfaces 3 and 4. The slots 11 and 12 are located at the foot of-the arcuate cam surfaces 3 and 4 so that, when the plug is inserted through a washer 13 of soft rubber or other appropriate material, and the cover 2, a turning movement will cause the arms 5 and 6 to ride up cams 3 and 4 substantially onto the surfaces 14, 15, against the abutments 16, 17 which prevent further movement in that direction. Due to the action of the arms of the plug on the cam surfaces, elastic washer 13 is compressed to form a tight seal which prevents the escape of electrolyte.
The vent plug has a hole 18 extending from the bottom to a point adjacent the top of the plug where it branches into one or more channels 19 leading to the exterior of the plug at an angle to the hole 18. These channels permit the escape of gas from the interior of the cell which is necessary to prevent the disrupting of the container by pressure of accumulating gases.
With my improvement it is not necessary to use care in inserting or removing the vent plug, as there are no threads to jam and it is impossible to perform an incorrect manipulation. Since the Wings 9 and 10 are in line with the arms on the bottom of the plug, the insertion of the plug throu h the cover can be readily made, and a quic turn in a clockwise direction accomplishes the removal in the same expeditious manner. The abutments 16 and 17 on the cover extend to the slots 12 and 11 respectively, which prevents the plug being rotated in the wrong direction when attempting to seat it in position in the cover.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In storage batteries, a cover having a filling opening, a slot joining said opening, an arcuate cam surface commencing at said slot and inclining away from said cover, a plug adapted to pass through said slot and having'an arm adapted to ride-upsaidcam surface during the rotation ofthe plug in said opening, and means on saidp ug adapted to be forced against the cover by the action of the arm on,saidca1n,.
