CHURN.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 27| i917.
4"VVILIILIAM. FLETCHER, 0F SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
CHURN.
To all whom t mag/concern: y
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Fmi'rorriin, a `citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco,in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful mprovements 4in Churns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to churns, and has foiI its object to provide a churn of novel, simple, durable and `inexpensive construction and which will be quick and efic-ient in operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a churn constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same,
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2,
Fig. Ll: is a horizontal sectional view of the same, and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the pinion, ily wheel and dashers associated therewith.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the lid.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates the churn body which is of a cylindrical form and which may be constructed of any desired material. The body is preferably wider at its lower than at its upper and open end so that its sides flare from the top to the bottom of the body, and the base 2 of the body, at the center thereof may be provided with an upstanding boss having a substantially square opening 3, or the socket may be formed in the body proper, if desired. This opening 3 is adapted to receive the squared end 4L of a vertically arranged rod 5, the said rod eX- tending through the open mouth of the churn body and has its end secured in a depending sleeve 6 provided with a longitudinally arranged crank hanger or bearing 7. The numeral 8 designates the shaft which is journaled in the bearing 7, the said shaft having one of its ends connected with the crooked or angular portion 9 of an operating handle 10. The opposite end of the shaft 8 has secured thereon a beveled toothed wheel 11 which meshes with the pinion 12, the said pinion having a depending hub 13 provided with a central bore 14 Specification of Letters Patent.

through which the rounded upper end of the rod 5 is passed, the `said rod also passing through a suitable opening in the pinion 12. The hub 13 below the pinion 12 is formed with a fly wheel 15, and the portion which extends within the churn body is 'formed with laterally extending arms 16 which connect the upper ends of the vertically disposed dasher members 18 thereto. Preferably two of these dasher members are employed and the same preferably have their lower portions widened and formed with a series of circular openings 19. The ends of the dasher are connected by a suitable arm 20 which has its central portion formed with an enlargement provided with an opening 21 through which the rounded portion of the rod 5 passes above its squared portion 1, which engages in the squared opening 3. The sides of the churn body are rovided with vertically disposed spaced ba e plate 22, the same preferably having their lower ends widened and their outer edges gradually decreasing in width to the upper ends of the said plates. The closure for the churn body comprises a pair of members 23 and 211, one of the said members having its inner edge provided with a groove 25 and the opposite member having its inner edge provided with a tongue 26 which is adapted to be received within the said groove, and the said members at their central portions are provided with semicylindrical depressions to receive the hooks 13 of the pinion 12. The members 23 and, 2&1 are provided with flanges 27 and 28 which engage with the inner surface of the churn body at the mouth thereof, and one or bot-h of the members 23-24 are provided with a handle 29 whereby the closure sections may be readily removed when desired. 1f desirable, spring means may be employed for securing the closure sections upon the body, but from practice it has been found that the frictional engagement of the flanges 27-28 with the mouth of the churn body sustains the closure in proper position upon the said body. 1t will be noted that the central semi-cylindrical depression in the members providing the closure f1 provides a bearing for the hub to hold the dasher and hub in proper position in the churn body. Y
It will be further noted that the Hy wheel materially assists in the rotation of the dasher members 18, and that the device is simple, cheap and should be appreciated by those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains. v
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
l. An agitator including a receptacle, an axially disposed rod fixed at its lower end in the bottom of said receptacle, actuating means mounted upon the upper portion of said rod, a sleeve depending` from said actuating means and actuated thereby, vertical blades radially disposed relatively to said sleeve and rod, upper and lower sets of clamping plates between which the blades are mounted, means for attaching the upper plates to the sleeve, said lower plates being formed as a bearing about said rod.
2. The combination expressed in claim 1 in which the blades increase in width toward their lower ends, the lower portion only of said blades being provided with openings.
3. The combination as expressed in claim 2 in which the receptacle increases in diameter toward its lower end and baile blades are disposed therein parallel with the axial rod.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM FLETCHER.
