Description

F. P. BRANNAN.
Improvementn Plows.
N0. 131,596, Patented Sep. 24, 1872.
HHHHI fawm/ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS P. BRANNAN, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,596, dated September 24, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS I?. BRANNAN, of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plows, of which the following is a specification:
Figure lis a side view of my improved plow, the handles being omitted. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same taken through the line .r w, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top view, showing the plow attached to a wooden beam. Fig. 4 is a side view of the same. Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views of modified forms of the washer.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved plow which may be readily adjusted to work at any desired depth in the ground, and which may be attached to a cast beam, a wrought beam, or a wooden beam, as may be desired; and it consists in the construction and combination of various parts, as
-hereinafter more fully described.
A is the body of the plow, which is cast solid with the standard B or bolted to said standard. The throat of the plow is formed by curving the standard B back from the colter of the plow A, as shown in Fig. 1, so that rubbish from the furrow-slice or land cannot collect in the throat, and thus clog or choke the plow. In the case of a cast beam, C, the rear end of the said beam and the forward end of the standard B are made with circular offsets to fit upon each other, and through the centers of which passes the bolt D by which the said standard and beam are secured to each other. The beam and standard are fur ther secured to each other by a second bolt, E,
which passes through a hole in the beam and a short slot in the standard a little in the rear of the bolt D, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4. Upon the bolt E is placed a polygonal washer,
F, the dat faces of which rest upon the straight ange G formed upon the standard B for that purpose, so that by adjusting a face of the eccentric F nearer toor further from the bolt E, to rest upon the flange G, and tightening the nuts of the bolts, the plow will be adjusted to Work deeper or shallower in the ground, as may be desired. In the case of a wroughtiron or wooden beam the rear end of said beam should extend to the rearward to intersect and be attached to the handle. In this case the bolt E may be placed further to the rearward by projecting the rear part of the standard as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. In the case of a wrought-iron or wooden beam a wa-sher, H, should be interposed betweenthe said beam and the standard B. The washer H is -made with a hole in the center to receive the bolt D, and with two points or projections l1. formed upon it above and below the center hole to enter holes in or to overlap the upper and lower sides of said beam, to form a firm connection between said beam and standard.
Havingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A plow-standard, B, having liange G and vertical slot on rear arm, combined with eccentric polygonal washer F arranged on the bolt E that clamps standard to beam, as and for the purpose described.
FRANCIS l?. BRANNAN.
