DRAB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fi1-e-Doors,of which the following is a. full, clear concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming it part of this specification. i p

A reinforcing bar 36 is disposed 1n the bottom rail and is covered with asbestos 37 or the like.
As is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 the stile and the bottom rail terminate out of contact witheach other, this being for the purposeof facilitating assembling of the for a purposewhich will hereinafter appear.
The gusset plates are adapted to seat in the corners formed by the stiles and top and bottom rails. j 4 7 In order to protect the ends of the stiles and top and bottom rails and to present a finished appearance thereto, I provide a cover box at each corner, the same'being best shown inFigs. 2 and 3. The box is des ignated Band is made of relativelythin material having three sides. Two sides of the box B are adapted to lie upon the outer stile sections and the outer portions of the rails R and R and thesesides are provided with slotted tongues 43 which are bent over the stile and rail and inwardly over the gusset plate flanges 39 and 40, said tongues being maintained'in position b means of nuts 4% carried by bolts 45 which pass through the box, stile, reinforcing bar and gusset plate. At each corner of the door the structure described in the foregoing is duplicated. The bolts pass through the slots 41 formed in the flanges 39 and 40 of the sset plate. As best shown in Fig. 2 fusib e washers 46 are interposed between the nuts 44: and the flanges 39 and 40 of the gusset late, said was determined abnormal temperature is reac ed to permit expansion of the door body without buckling of the same. This prevents irreparable damage to the door, the washers being easily renewed after a fire to place the door in condition for continued use.
To further reinforce the box structure and gusset plates the bolts 48 are provided, said bolts passing through the box structure,

The running gear of the door comprises a pair of bracket members 50 and 51 bolted at 52 and 53 to'the doorstructure, back-up plates 54 serving to distribute the pressure of the bolts 52 and 53 and revent mutilation of the inside sheet 11. The upper ends of the bracket are bent into U-shape formation to form bearings which support grooved rollers 56. The rollers 56 are adapted to run on a trackway comprising a flat bar 57 mounted on spacing supports 58 and bolts 59. Track binders 60 are provided on'top of the top rail ofthe door and are adapted to project above the bottom margin of the trackway 57 so that in the event of fire and when the door expands raisingjthe rollers from the trackway the binders 60 willserve to engage the trackway and prevent the door from falling away from its opening. The binder 64 comprises a flat plate bent at right angles and adapted to be fastened to one side of the door frame 65, one free end of the binder 64: being offset at 67 and in spaced relation to the door frame so that the angle piece 63 may engage between the door-frame and the offset portion when in closed position. A front binder comprises a flat plate 68 bolted or otherwise secured to the other side of the frame of the door and provided with an offset portion 69 to embrace the door when in thermally controlled mechanism or the like.
After the door has been assembled, a plurality of rivets are inserted through the front and rear sheets of the door to prevent said sheets from buckling in the center, said rivets are designated 71.
In Fig. 6 a portion of one corner of the door is shown, a portion of the side being in section to illustrate the manner of protecting the bolt and to present a finished appearance to the door. This embodies a strip of metal 90 inserted betweenthe asbestos covering of the reinforcing bar and the outer wall of the stile and covering the bolt. The plate is soldered at the opening so as to present a substantially smooth exterior surface.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a simple, durable inspection. The disposition of the corrugzu tions of the trout and rear sheets at right angles to each other permits a circulation 01: an through the door at all times as well as providing a door which cannot Warp, is
more rigid than usual with. this type of door and is light in weight. I direct particular attention to the spacing of. the lower margin of the front paneli'rom the bottom rail, so that any water entering at the top of the door and gaining access to the interior thereof will. easily drain off the lower rail. This feature obviates the difficulty now e11- countercd in sheet metal doors which quickly causes rust to accumulate at the baseof the door resulting in deterioration and decay.
In assembling the door the stile sections are first fastened to their respective panels. The asbestos sheet is placed on the front panel, the former being laid fiat on a suitable support and the rear 1panel is placed upon the front panel. T is interlocking strips 22 are then engaged with the stile sections to connect the same and the panels are then ready to receive the top and bottom rails. The top and bottom rails are then riveted to said panels and the door is raised to receive the enforcing plates 24 and 36. Of course, it will be understood that, if desired, the sections of the top and bottom rails may be applied to the front and rear panels before the first step of assemblage. The connection between the stile sections and the sections of the top and bottom rails permit a convenient methodof assembly of the door and when the door is assembled the stiles and top and bottom rails present" smooth surfaces so that the door" may be applied directly for use in an opening or for use over an opening, as illustrated in the drawings.
On the outer panels of the door I place a standard piece of hardware in the form of a strip 92 inclined parallel to the top margin of the door, said strip being shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the roller beingshown in dotted lines in Fig. 4:. This is a conventional form of guide roller now in wide use and a further showing would be superfluous, as those skilled in the art are thoroughly familiar with the structure and theuse of the same.
I am aware the doors of this class have been invented and patented heretofore, but I have designed a door in which the rail and stile structures have been constructed to facilitate assemblage and cheapen the manufacture, as Well as provide 'a door e event of whichis readily applicable for use in connection with. any opening and with anyau-V I tomatic closing mechanlsm.
7 While I have shown and described my invention as embodying certain detail structure, I desire that it be understood that I reserve the right to make changes in such structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
L The combination with a air of juxtaposed panels, of a pair 0 stiles composedof inside and outside sections, the outside section having a front portion connected to the front panel, the inner portion of said section having a locking flange formed thereon, the inside section having a locking flange formed thereon for alinement with the first flange'on the outside section, an interlocking strip to engage said flanges, and
connected sections to form the complete stile and said inner section being connected to said inner panel.
2. The combination with juxtaposed corrugated panels of a rail structure composed of a front portion substantially right-angular'in. cross section and formed with anotfset upstanding flange for engagement with the outer panel, a rear portion having an upstanding flange for engagement with the inner panel, locking flanges formed on the free marginsof said portions, an interlocking. strip for connection with said flanges to form the rail, and a reinforcing bar within said rail.

In a door of the kind described, two parallel spaced panels, hollow stiles at the sides of the door and hollow rails at the top and bottom of the door, interlocking flanges and removable strips joining the edges of the panels within said stiles and rails, the ends of the stiles and rails at the corners of the door being cut away to afford openings for the insertion of the locking strips, and corner forming members embracing the stiles and rails at the corners of the door to complete the door.
