To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR E. BROSIUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machinesfor Charging Slabs, Billets, &c of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the faccompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a machine embodying my invention.

My invention is designed to provide a simple and efficient machine for charging slabs, billets and the like into furnaces; and more particularly, to provide a machine of this character which is hand manipulated and which can be operated by any usual crane mechanism. Also to provide a machine of this character by which the slabs and the billets can be readily and easily manipulated and brought into proper position.
The nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which I have shown a pre ferred embodiment thereof, and which will now be described,'it being premised, however, that various changes can be made in the details of construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as defined in the appended claims. I
' In these draw-ings'the numeral 2 desig nates the peel of the charging machine or device, and which is shown as consisting of a tubular member journaled in a front bearing block 3 provided with roller or other suitable anti-friction bearings' l. The rear end portion of this peel member is connected by a tubular member 5 with the hub portion 6 of a rear bearing member 7, the
.latter being journaled on the anti-friction bearings 8 in the supension block 9. The block 9 is designed to be suspended from an overhead crane trolley (not shown) or-from a trailer attached to said vtrolley, as indicated by thesuspension chain 10. The front bearing block 3 is suspended, asindic'ated at 11, from the hook of any trolley of an overhead traveling crane (not shown), this suspension point being a movable point which allows of anydesired angle of operation.

The operation is as follows: The partsbeing iii-the position shown in Fig. 2, when the hand wheel 32 is turned in a clockwise direction, the screw 15 will be actuated to in turn actuate the l ink 21 and tongs 27 to close the latter 0n the slab or ingot the manner shown in Fig. 1. If it is desiredtoturn the ingot in a horizontal plane about the vertical: axis ofthe screw 15, this can beeffected by turning the hand wheel 32 in clockwise direction; Inasmuch as the tongs-are closed upon the ingot, further relative movement of the nut and screw is prevented, and the entire peel will rotate on its frontand rear bearings.- The weight of the ingot on the screw, however, maintains thelatter in its vertical position, the hub portion 13 of the gear casing turning on the anti-friction bearings. 14. The gearing in the gear casing i the'reby caused to actin the manner of a differential gear to cause a rotation of the screw and nut, and thereby turn the ingot to the desired angle. as a safeguard to prevent any tendency of the entire peel to turn in an anti-clockwise direction onits bearings and thus tend to release the grip of the tongs. r
The advantages of my invention result from the provision of a simple and comparatively inexpensive charging device which can be lurid-manipulatedand operated by ordinary crane mechanlsm, and which is comparatively inexpensive.

7. Charging mechanism of the character described, comprising a rotatable peel, bearings in which said peel is mounted, said bearings having means for suspendingthe peel from overhead points of support, a gear casing rotatably mounted on the peel, an actuating screw extending withinthe gear casing, tongs operatively connected with said screw, a nut engaging the screw,.;a-bevel gen 1' wheel carried by the nut, another bevel gear wheel engaging the first named wheel, an actuating rod for the bevel gear extending through the peel and provided with an actuatingdevice, and means for locking the actuatin rod and peel against relative movement, su stantially as described.
8. The combination with a horizontal peel,

10. In apparatus of the character described, the combination with a horizontal peel, of tongs suspended from the outer end portion of the peel, and means for rotating the tongs about a vertical axis passing through the center of the tongs, substantially as described.
11. In apparatus of the character described, the combination with a horizontal peel suspended from an overhead support, of tongs suspended from the outer end portion of the peel, and means for rotating the tongs about a vertical axis which is eccentric with respect to the points of suspension of the peel, substantially as described.
12. In apparatus of the character described, a horizontally movable peel, tongs swiveled to and depending from the outer end portion of the peel, and means for rotating the tongs about a vertical axis passing through the end portion of the peel from which the tongs are suspended, substantially as described.
13. In apparatus of the character described, a horizontally movable peel, tongs swiveled to and depending from the outer end portion ofthe peel, and gearing mounted on the peel and having means for opening and closing the tongs and for rotating the tongs in a horizontal plane when they are closed independently of the movement of the peel, substantially as described.
14. In apparatus of the character described, the combination with a horizontal peel of tongs suspended from the outer end portion of the. peel, and means for rotating the tongs about a vertical axis while holding the peel stationary, substantially as described.
