JOSEPH n. MILLS, 01* LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
SUSPENDERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. MILLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of ,Los' Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Suspenders, of which w.the following is a specification.
My invention relates to suspenders. Suspenders are commonly made of some flexible fabric, and either in whole or in. art'having rubber interwoven in the same or the purpose of giving the suspenders an elastic quality. It is the principal object of my invention to produce suspenders of simple form and construction made entirely of metal, portions of the. same bein made of coiled springs for the purpose of impartingelasticity to the article. Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter from the following description.
Referring to the drawings which are for illustrative purposes only:
Figure 1 is a face view of a pair of suspenders embodying a form of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective View of one of the links.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the elastic units.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the adjusters.
The suspenders in general consist of two shoulder pieces 11 connected to a back member 12 and back fasteners 13 and front fasteners 14. Each shoulder piece consists of a series of alternate links 15 and elastic units 16. Each link 15 consists of a U-shaped wire member, the open ends being bent to form eyes 17 and the closed end of the link being bent to provide eyes 18 at each corner of the same. Each elastic unit 16 also consists of a U-shaped member formed of wire, the closed end 20 of the member being bent to form eyes 21 and each leg 22 being coiled as indicated at 23 to form a spring, the open ends of the member being bent to form eyes 24.
The links 15 and the elastic units 16 are connected together as they are made, the eyes 17 of the links 15 engaging the eyes 21 of the units 16 and the eyes 24 of the units 16 engaging the eyes 18 of the links 15. The shoulder pieces 11 terminate at the back in elastic units 16 which are connected to the back member 12. The back member 12 is a U-shaped member having three eyes 25 at the closed end ofthe member and eyes 26' Specification of Letters Patent.

formed on the open ends of the same. The last unit 16 of each shoulder piece is connected by means of its eyes 24 with'the eyes 25 of the back member 12, the adjacent ends of the respective units 16 being connected to the central eye 25 and the two outer ends of such units 16 being connected ;to the two, outer eyes 25. Y
The connector 29 is of thesame c0nstruction as the elastic .units 16, the eyes 26 of the back member 12 being connected to one end of the connector 29 and the other end of the connector bein connected to eyes 31 formed on the back astene'r The back fastener consists of a'wire bent in U-shape, the ends 32 being spread apart and terminating in hook portions 33 adapted to be engaged by buttons on the garment to orted. The front fasteners 14 are of substantially the same form as the back fasteners 13 being provided with hook portlons 35 and eyes 36 to which connectors 37 are attached, the connectors being two wires 38 each coiled to form a spring, the wires at one end being attached to the front fasteners 14 and at their other ends to adjusters 40-.
Each adjuster 40 consists of two U-sha- ped wire members 41 and 42. The member 41 is bent to form eyes 43 at the closed end and the legs 44 are bent to form a series of notches 45 terminating at their free ends in eyes 46 which engage around the legs 47 of the member 42 being freely slidable thereon. The member 42 is also bent to form eyes 48 at the closed end of the same, the ends of the sides being bent to form elongated eyes 50. The eyes 50 are elongated for purposes hereinafter described being elastically held or comiected to each other by means of a coiled spring 51.
The adjuster is secured to the shoulder pieces by engagement with coiled springs 52 and the lower ends of the adjusters are secured to the front fasteners by means of the connectors 37 When it is desired to adjust the length of the suspenders the legs 47 of the member are spread apart and moved over the notches, the elongated eyes 50 permitting free movement of such legs and when moved so that the suspenders are 6f proper length, the eyes 50 are held in engagement with the proper notch by the spring 51.
It is understood that the complete suspender is made entirely o'f wire being preferably of a? wire such as piano wire, which,
while small in diameter, has considerable strength and elasticity. By placing a series of coiled springs in the suspenders, the clasticity of the article is distributed throughout its length so that any turning or twisting movement of the body or bending movement of the same is accommodated and evenly distributed throughout the length of the suspenders.
What I claim is:
1. A unit for suspenders comprising a U- shaped Wire member formed of a single piece of wire with a coiled spring in each leg of the member.
2. A pair of wire suspenders comprising shoulder pieces, garment fasteners attached to said shoulder pieces, a front garment fastener for each shoulder piece, and an adjuster between each front garment fastener and its associated shoulder piece, said adjusters each consisting of two U-shaped members each having eyes formed on their open ends engaging the other member, one of said members being bent to form a series of notches on each side of the same adapted to be engaged by the eyes on the other member and a coiled spring connecting the eyes on the member engaging the notches to elastically hold said eyes in engagement with the notches.
v4. A unit for suspenders comprising a U JOSEPH E. MILLS.
