To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. CUNNI G- HAM, a' citizen of the United States, res1ding at Cleveland, in the coiuity of Cuyahoga "and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement: in Clamps, of which the 'following'is a. full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings;
This invention relates to clamping devices that are especially suitable for clamping together .form plates of sectional molds that are used in concrete construction. V It is the object of my invention to provid a quick acting clamp wherein only a slight unscrewing of the clamping screw is necessary before the jaws may be separated totheir maximum extent, and upon the reverse operation, the jaws may be brought almost to normal clamping condition before the screwing operation need be performed, and when performed, occupies a very brief interval of time.
In the drawing Figure 1 represents a fragmentary side elevation of sectional column mold or form the edges of the plates or sections whereof are clamped together by clamping devices of my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional detail through adjacent edges of adjoining form plates that are clamped together by my clamping device, such section being represented by the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is atransverse section through the clamping device on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;

The sections or plates a of the form A, herein shown. as a cylindrical column form, have their vertical edges turned radially outward to produce flat abutting portions a which engage the corresponding portions of adjoining plates. The outer edge portions of the radial portions a are bent laterally in one direction and then in the other to constitute interlocking portions a These interlocking portions constitute, in effect, vertical beads or ribs of considerably wider extent than the aggregate thickness of the abutting portions a. Consequently, a clamp, to be applied to the abutting portions, must have its jaws separated enough to pass over the interlocking portions and thereafter be drawn inward for engagement with the outer surfaces of the abutting portions.

This aperture is sufficiently small in area to prevent either the head 11 or nut 12 fronrpassmg through, but the same is n ade'long enough 1n a direction transverse the body'portion of the jaw 1 to permit the bolt to swing laterally in the jaw to a considerable extent. Opposite the boss or enlargement 16 of the jaw 1, the jaw 2 is provided with an upwardly opening notch 18 that is formed in a boss or enlargement 19. The outer face of the boss or enlargement is flat, and .at its upper end is provided,
on each side, with a projection 20.
In opening the clamp for application to the form joint, the nut12 is unscrewed a sufficient distanceto permit the head of the bolt or screw to be shifted from beneath the projections 20, which projections, it will be understood, serve to hold the head against turning when adjusting the nut, and to prevent the withdrawal of the bolt from the notch, when the clamp is in use. When shifted as aforesaid, the bolt may be rocked within the aperture 15 to rernaove its headed end from the notch 18. Thereafter, the jaws may be swung open to any desired extent within the limits of their movement which, it may be explained, is far in excess of anything actually needed in practice. The clamp is then applied to the joint and the jaws brought together in contact with the opposite sides of the abutting portions a. The headed end of the bolt 10 is then dropped into the notch 18, and is placed under tension by screwing in on the nut 12, the head 11 occupying its position beneath the projections 20 during this operation. From the foregoing it will be seen that my invention provides a very efiicient clamp, and one that is quick-acting and very convenient of use.
=H-aving thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A clamp designed for use with sectional molds of the character set forth and comprising a pair of jaws that are pivoted together at oneof their ends to swing in a substantially fixed plane with respect to each other and terminating at their opposite ends in opposed bearing-heads, the jaws being bowed outward intermediate their ends, a member permanently carried by one jaw and swingable transversely of the aforesaid plane, the other jaw having a notch open at one side edge ofthe jaw and into which saidfmemiber is adapted to be swung, said member being provided with a head for engagement with an abutment portion of the notched jawwhereby the jaws are held against separation and means for varying theefi'ective length of said member.
A clamp designed for use with sectional molds of the character set forth and comprising a pair of jaws that are pivoted together at one of their ends to swing in a substantially fixed plane with respect to each other and terminating at their opposite ends in opposed bearing heads, the jaws being bowed outward intermediate their ends, one of said jaws having a notch and the other an aperture, a bolt extending through the aperture, said aperture being ample to permitv the bolt to swing transversely of the aforesaid plane and into the aforesaid notch, the head of the bolt being adapted to bear against the outer side of the notched jaw said jaw having a projection for engagement with the side of the bolt head thereby to hold the bolt against turning, and a nut applied to the bolt on the outer side of the apertured jaw.
