G. P. BUTLER.
MACHINE FOR TRIMMING TENPINS.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 9, 1919.

UNITED STATES PATENT oEEioE.
GEORGE P. BUTLER, OF LEBANON, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
MACHINE FOR TRIMMING TENPINS.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE P. BUTLER, a citizenof the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Trimming Tenpins; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-
Figure 1 a side view partly in. section of a machine for trimming tenpins constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 a face view of the cutter-block with cutters thereon.
Fig. 4 a transverse sectional view showing the neck of the yoke and the mounting therefor, and operating screw.
This invention relates to an improvement in machines for trimming tenpins. After use the lower ends of tenpins become chipped off so that they will not stand firmly in an upright position, and when so impaired must be refinished.
The object of this invention is to improve means for holding the pins during the refinishing operation; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention I employ a yoke 5 of suitable size for use in connection with the pin to be refinished. The arms of the yoke are connected with a ring 6 which enters a runway 7 formed in a ringsupport 8 mounted on a suitable base 9, and in a semi-circular cap 10 bolted to the ringsupport 8 forming a continuous runway for the ring which is permitted to turn in the runway but held against longitudinal move-' ment. The inner face 11 of the ring is tapered corresponding to the outer face of the tenpin 12 to be refinished. At the outer end the yoke is formed with a reduced neck 13 which is mounted in a post 1 1 also extending upward from the base 9, the reduced neck 13 forming a shoulder 15 which bears against the post 14:. In the post is a set screw 16 entering an annular groove 17 in the neck 13, which also serves to hold the yoke against longitudinal move Specification of Letters Patent.

sides of one arm of the yoke so as to hold the yoke against rotation. Inrear of the support 8 and mounted upon a bed 27 on the base 9 is a cutter-block 28 held in place by a plate 29 bolted to the bed 27 and extending over a flange 30 on the cutterblock.
This cutter-block carries a side cutting blade 31, a base cutter 32 and a central drill 33 of usual construction, the base cutter 32 including a curved cutter 3 1 which will form the cup-shaped recess 35 in the base of the pin. The cutter-block is connected by means of a set screw 36 with an adjusting screw 37 mounted in bearings 38 and 39 extending upward from the base 9 and on the screw between the bearings 38 and 39 is a nut 40 formed with a ring 41 by which the nut may be turned. A tenpin to be refinished is inserted into the yoke and the screw 19 turned so as to crowdthe pin into close engagement with the yoke, the latch 23 being thrown upward to hold the yoke against rotation while the pin is being adjusted. After the lower end of the pin is crowded into engagement with the ring 11 the latch will be retired so that continued movement of the handle 22 will cause the oke to revolve with the pin. The cutterlock 28 will then be advanced to bring the cutters into engagement with the lower end of the pin so that the cutter 31 will trim the outer surface of the lower end, the cutter 32 trim the lower end of the pin, the curved portion 34 forming a cup-shaped recess 35, and the drill 33 forming a centrally arranged hole in the pin so as to assist in holding the cutters in right relative position. With this construction a continued movement of the handle 22 not only serves to crowd the pin into engagement with the ring of the yoke, but by the frictional engagement of the pin with the yoke rotate the If the pin is not crowded into its its seat and cause it to frictionally engage therewith so as to turn the yoke. The pin is thus frictionally supported and in position to be acted upon by the cutters in the desired manner.
I claim 1. In a machine for trimming tenpins, the
combination with ayoke formed at one end with a ring, a runway for said ring, said yoke formed with a neck, a support for the neck, a screw extending through said neck, and means for turning said screw.
2. In amachine for trinnning tenpins, the
with a ring, a runway for said ring, said yoke formed with a neck, a support for the neck, ascrew extending through said neck, means for turning said screw, and a cutterblock carrying the cutters and adapted to be moved toward and from the yoke.
at. In a machine for trimming tenpins, the combination with a yoke formed at one end with a ring, arunway for said ring, said ring formed with a beveled seat, the opposite end of the yoke formed with a neck, a post in which said neck is supported, a screw extending through said neck and provided at one end with a socket and at the outer end with a crank handle.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE P. BUTLER. Witnesses:
