Specification of Letters Fatent.
To all whom it may concern l Be it known that 1, Bonus Dion, a subject of the King of England, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri United vStates of America, have invented a certain new and useful Belay, of which the followto which an automo lie is subjected. The other end of the coil 7 is connected to the stationary contact 16 cooperating with the movable contact 8, which latter is in electrical connection with the terminal 25 to which is connected one pole of the battery 29, while its other pole is grounded.
The magnetic circuit of the relay comprises the core 3, the cup'2, and the mov-- able armature l attached to the plunger 10. This movable armature has openings which permit the two terminals 25, 26, and the stationary contact 16 to project into the space inclosed by the cover 30, without interfering with the movement of the armature 4. The fine wire coil 6 is always in circuit with the main brushes of the dynamo 28, but the battery 29 is connected to said brushes only when the circuit is closed at the contacts 8 and 16, in which case the battery is connected to the dynamo through the winding 7.
This indicating relay should be mounted in a position in which its axis is not vertical in case gravity, rather than a spring, is relied upon to restore the indicator to its off position, and the projection 15 on the bracket 33 should lie below the center line of the relay. v
The operation of this indicating relay, for
any of the positions for which it is best suited, is as follows: As long as the dynamo is at rest, or is running at such slow speed as to generate an E. M. F. smaller than the normal terminal voltage of the battery 29, the magnetization produced within the cup 2 by the linc wirc coil (3 will not be sailicient to overcome the spring 35 and attract the armature 4 into close proximity with the edges of the cup The contacts 8 and 16 will, therefore, be kept at a distance from each other, and the battery circuit, indicated in Fig. 4. will be open. As long as the plunger 10 is under the control of the spring 35, the plunger 11, which may or may not be fastened to the plungcr10, will not exert any pressure on the projection 15 of the bracket 33, and the latter, impelled by gravity in this instance, will so place itself as to display, through the window 32 the word Off written on the plate 31 But as soon as the voltage of the dynamo has reached a value approximating that of the storage battery :29. the armaturel will be attractcd and the battery circuit closed at the points Fa and 16. As long as the dynamo voltage is the same as that of the battery, no current will flow either way, but as soon as the dynamo voltage rises, a charging current will be sent c into the battery, which charging current Wlll circulate through the coil 7, energizing the magnetic circuit of the relay in the same direction as that in which it is energized Charge will come opposite the window 32,
thus advising the driver of the automobile that the battery is being charged. Should the speed of the dynamo fall to a value for which the voltage at the main brushes of the latter is less than the voltage at the te minals of the Storage battery, then the latter will send a current into the dynamo 28, with the result that the current through the iooil 7 will be reversed, opposing the magnetization of the coil 6 and causing an immediate release of the armature 4. The spring 35, now being in control, interrupts the battery circuit at the points 8 and 16, thus preventing the useless discharge of the battery 29. At the same time the pressure of the plunger 11 on the projection 15 isrelaxed and the bracket 33 falls into its posi tion of rest, advising the driver of the change which has taken place, by displaying the word Ofi'.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. A relay comprising a cup,a core of magnetic material positioned in said cup, an
.exciting coil within said cup and surrounding said core, a block of insulating material held in position in one end of said cup, connecting terminals and a stationary contact terminal all supported on said block, and a movable contact member supported from a the stationary contact terminal.

In a relay, means forming a magnetic circuit, said means comprising a cylindrical outer member of magnetic material, a core of magnetic material centrally positioned within said outer member and in magnetic connection therewith at one end, an armature cooperating with said outer member and core, an exciting coil Within the outer member and surrounding the central core, a block of insulating material for holding the coil in place, conducting terminals support ed on said block, and a movable switch arm supported on said terminals.
7. In a relay, means forming a magnetic circuit, said means comprising a cylindrical outer member of magnetic material a core of magnetic material centrally positioned Within said outer member and in magnetic connection therewith at one end, an armature cooperating with said outermeinber and core, an exciting coil within the outer member and surrounding the central core, a block of insulating material for holding the coil in place, conducting terminals supported on said block, a movable switch arm supported on said terminals, an indicating device, and means extending through the core and operativelyconnecting the armature and indicating device.
In a relay, means forming a magnetic circuit, said means comprising an outer member of magnetic material, a core of magnetic material centrally positioned within said outer member and in magnetic connection therewith at one end, an armature cooperating with said outer member and core, an exciting coil within the outer member and surrounding the core, a block of insulating material for holding the coil in place, two conducting terminals and a contact terminal supported on said block, and a movable switch arm supported on the conducting terminals and cooperating with the contact terminal, said switch aim being in mechanical connection with the armature.
9. A relay comprising a cup, a core of magnetic material positioned in said cup and provided with a central opening, an exciting; coil within said cup and surrounding said core, a block of insulating material held in position in one end of said cup, connecting terminals and a stationary contact terminal all supported on said block, a plunger slidingly mounted in the core and carrying an armature cooperating with said core, and a movable contact member cooperating with the stationary contact terminal and loosely coupled to said plunger.
