To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLA J OHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nocatee, in the county of De Soto and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Closures, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawmgs.
My invention relates to bottle stopping devices and particularly to stoppers or closures for bottles having corks or stoppers which are perforated so that liquid may be dropped or sprayed therefrom.
The general object of my invent on is the provision, in connection with a bottle having a stopper of this character, of a cap so mounted that it may be slipped up and down the neck of the bottle but which is resiliently held over the top of the bottle when the cap is in operative position.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of a bottle broken away at its upper end showing my improved cap in section;
Fig. 2 is a like view to Fig. 1 but showing the cap slid down on the neck of the bottle;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the bottle neck and cork;
Fig. 4 is a top plan view ofthe cap and band;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cap detached;
Fig. 6 is a diagrammatic illustration of the spring construction.
Referring to these drawings, 10 designates a bottle of any suitable character having an elongated neck 11. The upper end of this neck is formed with the usual flange 12 and disposed within the neck of the bottle is a cork or stopper 13 having a large perforation 14 and a small perforation 15, the latter being for the inlet of air when the bottle is tipped. The perforation 14 is large enough to allow a drop at a time to escape from the bottle so that the bottle may be used for dropping medicines. While I have illustrated a stopper 13 of this character, I wish it understood that my invention 1s equally applicable to bottles having other forms of stoppers.
Surrounding the elongated neck of the bottle is a band 16 which is loose upon the neck so that it may be slid up and down. The cap 17 is preferably of metal and is preferably provided at a plurality of points with downwardly extending tabs 18 which when the bottle is filled may be forced inward to engage the flange and hold the cap 17 in secure engagement with the top of the bottle. These tabs are to be bent outward when the bottle is to be used. The cap is preferably connected with a coil spring 19 operatively connected to the band 16, this coil spring acting. to urge the cap 17 to its closed position. As illustrated, the coil spring is formed to provide a finger piece 20 which when depressed will cause the cap 17 to open or raise from the mouth of the bot tle. hen the cap 17 is raised, the band 16 together with the cap may be shifted downward upon the bottle neck to an inoperative position where it will not be in the way. It is obvious, however, that the cap may be simply raised and not shifted if it be desired to only pour out a drop or so.
It will be seen that this device is very simple, may be easily and cheaply made, and is extremely convenient for all those bottles which have perforated stoppers and which require that the perforations in the stoppers be covered to prevent the evaporation of the liquid contained within the bottle. It will be seen that the cap is automatically engaged with the top of the bottle as soon as the pressureupon the finger piece 19 is released and that the cap and band, as before stated, may be slid the length of the neck. I do not wish to limit myself, however, to the use of the band 16 which is slidably mounted upon the neck of the bottle as under some circumstances it is necessary that the band 16 or other attaching device for the cap shall slide.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
l. The combination with a bottle having a cylindrical, relatively elongated, annular neck, with a flange at the outlet end of the neck, of an annular band loosely surrounding the neck below said flange and slidable longitudinally thereon on the neck, a metal lic cap hinged directly upon the band and resiliently urged to a closed position, the diameter of the cap and the width of the band being less than the length of the smooth portion of the neck, and a thumb piece 0peratively connected to the cap and project ing beyond the hinged connection thereof, whereby the cap may be shifted to an open position against the action of the resilient means.
2. The combination with a bottle having a cylindrical, el0ngated, annular neck, with a flange at the outletend of the neck, "of an annular band loosely surrounding the neck below said flange and slidable longitudinally on the neck, a metallic cap hinged directly upon the band and resiliently urged to. a closed position, the diameter of the cap and the width of, the band being less than the 1 5,. length of the smooth portion of the neck,
and a thumb piece operati ely con ected to the cap and projecting beyond the hinged connection thereof, whereby the cap may be shifted to an open position against the action of the resilient means, the periphery of the cap being formed with downwardly ex- 7 tending flexible tabs adapted to be initially engaged over said flange to hold the cap in its closed position.
