AIR-VALVE FOR FURNACES USING LIQUID FUEL.
To ll? whom it may concern:
-Be it known that I, HAROLD EDGAR Yannow, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in Glasgow, Scotland, have invented a certain new and useful Air-Valve for Furnaces Using Liquid Fuel, of which the following is a specification. The invention relates to means for controlling the flow of air to a furnace burning liquid fuel and comprises a valve which isadapted to control the supply ofair and atthe same time to act as a sa'fetydeviceto prevent, in the case of a blow back or rlse of pressure in the furnace, the escape of air, '1
gas or steam into the stokehold. The construction of the valve and of the valve seating to the invention, Figure 1 is a front cle vation'and Figs. 2 and 3 sections on the lines 2---2 and3-3 respectively of Fig, 1.
The seating, or fixed part, A of the air valve is in the form of a frustum f a hollow cone; in the sides of the cone area numberof ports'or passages B, which may be pro-. videdwith directing vanes'C 1n order to imshown in the fully open position by dot and dash lines in Fig. 2 and by full lines in the closed position. The construction is such that in the closed position of the valve, ports G of the valve are opposite to the bars D in the seating and bars H between the ports of the valve are opposite to the ports B of the seating, so that in this position the air supply to the furnaces is entirely out ofi, and the air supply can be controlled as required by moving the valve toward or away from the seating. v Th ports G may be provided with directing vanes I, in order to impart a whirling motion to the air, or they may be clear passages. The plane end of the valve F is, preferably, lined with asbestos as shown at M.
The valve, F, is supported, in the example shown, on rollers K, but any suitable means may b adopted to move th valve in the around Specification of Letters Patent. 'Patgntgd A ,,.5 1919, Application filed October 30, 1917. Serial No. 199,313.
direction of the common axis of the valve and seating.
In the event of a blow back or rise in pressure in the furnace, the blast of air, gas or steam striking the, plane end L of the valve F causes it to move rapidly into contact with the seating A, thereby closing all ports and reventing any danger to the men in the sto ehold.
Having thus fully described the nature of my said invention and thebest means Iknow' v of y g the same intogpractical effect, 1 l
claim 1. Means for controlling the supply of air to a furnace burning liquid fuel comprising 1n combmation a fixed seating inthe form of a frustum of a hollow cone, a valve also i in the form-of a frustum of a hollow cone coaxial with the said seating and having'a plane end subject to the pressure of the gaseswithin the furnace to automatically move the valve in the direction of the common axis of the cones to close the'valve upon a rise of pressure in the furnace.
2. Means for controlling the supply of air i j to a furnace burning liquid fuel comprising 7 in combination a fixed seating in the form in the form of a frustum of a hollow cone coaxial with the said seating and having a plane end subjectto the pressure of the gases within the furnace to automatically move the valve in the direction ofthe common axis of the cones to close the valve upon a 3. Means for controlling the sup ly f I so iof a frustum of a hollow cone, a valve also air to a furnace burning liquid fuel comprising in combination a fixed seating in the form of a frustum of a hollow cone having ports and bars in its inclined sides, a valve also in the form of a frustum of a hollow cone, a valve also in the form of a frustum of a cone coaxial with the said seating and having ports and bars in its inclined sides adapted to register with the bars in the seatin in the closed position of the valve, said va ve. having a plane end subject to the pres sure of gases within the furnace and caused by a rise of pressure in the furnace to cause the valve to automatically move into closed position.
4. Means for controlling the supply of air to a furnace burning liquid fuel comprising in combination a fixed seating in the form of a frustum of a hollow cone, directing vanes on the said seating, a valve also in the form of a frustum of a hollow cone coaxial with the said seating and means carried by the valve and subject to the pressure of gases within the furnace to cause the valve to move automatically in the direction of the common axis of the cones and close the valve if a rise of pressure occurs in the said furnace.
5. Means for controlling the supply of air to a furnace burning liquid fuel comprising in combination a fixed seating in the form of a frustum of a hollow cone, a valve also in the form of a frustum of a hollow cone Witnesses JAMES RITCHIE, SILVESTER LYTTON.
