Specification of Letters Eatent. Patnt'd Allg', 5, 1919.,
Application led November 27, 1916. Serial No. 133,646. i
To all whom t may concern:
Be .it known that I, PHILIP H. SPAULDIN e, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Hinsdale, in the county of Dupage, State ot Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gate Fasteners; and l do hereby declare the following to be a Jfull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in wagon end gates, and particularly to a novel means for holding the gate in closed position, and the sides ot the wagon box closely gripped therewith.
One object of the present invention is to provide a novel means for holding a wagon box and end gate together, which can be easily inserted and removed when the wagon is within a shed or other structure in which the side walls are disposed close to the sides of the wagon. l
Another object is to provide a device whichv is simple in construction, and eHec tive and durable in operation.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing:
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the rear portion of a wagon equipped with my holder.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the invention in operative position.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical longitudinal sectional view through the invention taken transversely of the wagon box.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view ot the device and rear portion of the wagon box.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 and 11 represent the sides of the wagon, 12 the end gate, and 13 the cleats against which the end gate rests. Formed through the side 10, adjacent the top of the end gate, and outwardly thereof, is an opening 14, through which is disposed the flange or sleeve portion 15 of a plate 16, said plate being countersunk into the side of the wagon box, and secured by means of the rivets i 17 .n Secured to the outer face of the side 11, directly opposite to the opening 14, is a plate 18,`on which is formed a staple 19, extending at right angles from thel plate and through the opening 19 formed in the said side. rlhe plate 1G is termed with a vertical elongated opening 1G', through which is disposed a l'lattened bolt 20, said bolt being provided with the partial threads 21, and with which is engaged the nut 22. This nut is formed with laterally extending nger pieces 23, which are weighted, ior the purpose of counterbalancing the same. The inner end of the bolt is formed with a keyhole opening 25, while the outer end is -formed with a head 24 for retaining the nut in place. Engaged in this opening 25 is the angularly extending end 26 of a rod 27. rIhis end is 'formed with a lug 28 on its upper side, whereby the rod must be disposed in a vertical position before the end will properly enter the opening. Vhen so entered, the rod is swung downwardly into a horizontal position, whereby the said end is thus eifectively prevented from accident, displacement, or disengagement from the opening. The other end ot the rod is formed with a hook 29 which is adapted to be en* gaged with the said staple 19. On the end gate, in position to receive and support the intermediate portion of the rod, are the hook-shaped brackets 30. 1t will be noted ,that the nut is engaged on the bolt, outwardly of the side of the box, so that it will bear against the plate 16 when turned.
To remove the device from the wagon, for the purpose ot taking out the end gate, the nut is turned outwardly until the rod is suticiently loosened to permit of the removal of the hook 29 from the staple 19. The rod is then turned, or swung, upwardly until the lug 28 engages or registers with the straight portion of the keyhole opening of the bolt. rThe angular end of the rod can then be readily withdrawn' from the opening. The bolt, together with the nut, can also be removed from the plate 16, thus permitting of the ready removal of the end gate.
An upper gate 12 is used when the upper side boards 10 and 11 are disposed on the wagon box, and the parts of the securing means in connection with this upper gate are represented by characters similar to the first-named parts but these characters are i primed, as seen in Figs. 1, 2 and 4.
What is claimed is:
In an end gate `fastener, the combination with'the sides and end gate of a wagon,
said sides being formed with transverse openings, a staple member disposed inwardly Copies of `this patent-may be obtainedi for ve cents each, by addressing the outer end of the sleeve, und n rod having :i hook on one end for engagement in the .said staple member, und u laterally directed keyhead for engagement in the slot of the rod. l5
In testimonT whereof, l nilix my signutnre, in the presence of two witnesses.
