Be it known that I, NE1L F. HAVENS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Alexandria, in the county of Alexandria, and State of Virginia, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hoisting Mechanism, of which the following is a speciiication.
My present invention relates to hoisting mechanism, and particularly to a mechanism to be ittcd to and used upon a motor truck of standard type and construction.
An object of my invention is to arrange for derivation of operating power from the power means of the motor truck.
A further object is to provide a drive for the hoisting means in which the power transmitting shaft is disposed substantially at right angles to the turning axis of the hoisting drums.
Another purpose lies in mounting the hoisting structure upon a supportin frame which can be removed from the trucli frame `to leave the same free of obstructions, and
in mounting an upright frame and a boom in such relation that these parts can be lowered for movement of the machine and can be removed when desired.
A still further object is to provide side brace arms having raising jacks carried at the ends thereof, which arms can be swung out and then have the jacks thereof turned down to accomplish a side support for the frame to hold against lateral twisting or tilting, and to so mount the braces that when not in use they can be folded in against the truck frame.
Yet another object is to provide and arrange novel mounting and brace means for the several parts. Y Further objects of my invention will appear in the following detailed description, .taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which drawings:

In the drawings, where similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the views, A designates the truck frame as an entirety, the hoist supporting frame B being shown as mounted thereon, and the hoisting structure being` .shown at C. The upright frame D is mounted preferably at a point that the Weight carried thereby will be centralized upon` the load springs of the rear wheels of the truck, and the boom E is mounted from and supported by this frame. The lateral brace arms F and Gr are referably disposed adjacent the mounting ofthe upright frame D, as 1t is at this point that the greatest f twisting force will be exerted upon the vehicle frame, and it will of course be understood that the several parts are mounted and supported in any suitable manner, Power transmission to the hoisting structure is accomplished from the vehicle transmission, generally indicated at H, in a manner to be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The supporting frame B has the hoisting mechanism mounted thereon, and this hoisting mechanism can in fact be of any desired form and construction, winding drums 1 and 2, and boom swinging drums 3 and 4 being included. A hoist operating shaft 5 is mounted in suitable bearings and is geared to operate the winding drums l and 2 and the shaft by which the boom swinging drums 3 and 4 are turned, and this shaft 5 has a beveled gear 6 thereon. The frame B is secured on the truck frame A by means of screws 7, or any other suitable means of fastening, and a power transmission shaft 8 is mounted to extend substantially parallel with the main shaft of the truck, a beveled gear 9 being mounted on the `shaft in mesh with the beveled gear 6 so as the power transmission shaft 8 is turned, the hoist operating shaft 5 will be revolved at substantlally the same speed.
The Mack truck and some trucks of other makes, have a. stub shaft 10 extending fromthe transmission and revolving on an axis substantially parallel with the1 main shaft of the truck, and as has been stated above, it is the purpose of my invention to accomplish a drive from this stub shaft or from a standard part of a vehicle as already in use.
A drive shaft 11 is connected by a shaft coupling 12, With the stub shaft 10, and at its remaini g end is mounted in a bearing 1.3 provide on the truck frame, and thus as the truck engine is in operati-on this shaft l1 will be turned. A s rocket wheel 14 is mounted on the shaft 1 and a sprocket 15 is secured on the shaft 8 to line up with the sprocket 14, a sprocket chain 16 being arranged to accomplish a driving connection froiii the one s rocket to the other. Thron h the driving eo nec'tioii thus established, t e power transmission shaft 8 will impart constant `revoluble movement to the hoist operating shaft 5 during operation of the truck en ine, and when the operating levers 16 are s lifted to throw the clutches oi' the drums intooperative connection, the' respective drums will be revolved. As has been stated, the frame B is secured on the truck frame A by the use of bolts 7 or other separoble fnstenings, and thus the frame is removably secured in place. As the shaft S is carried by the frame portion B and the shaft 11 is supported from the truck frame A, it is onl necessary to separate one of the links of t e chain 16, in' removal of the frame B, and then the hoisting structure as an entil'et will be detached from the truck frame an the only art remaining will be the shaft 11, the cou" ing 12, bearing 13, and sprocket wheel 14, 'owever, as these parts are' loca-ted below the top of the frame they will not oifer obstruction or in any way interfere with the use of the truck.
The upright frame D is made substantially Ashaped, and includes the side members 18 and 19 and the cross bar 20. By this mounting of the upright frame structure, this frame ructure can be swung down rearwardly to rest upon the truck frame A, but the closedI ends of the bearing members' 23 and 24 limit movement of the sexie when i-t llas been swung up to the upright' relation and guard against forward swinging of' this upright frame.` "Io support the frame portion D in the position for use the braces 26 and 27 are connected at the upper end thereof and are lthen extended downwardly and furwardly'to terminate adjacent the truck: frame A, where they are removably secured by bolts or other fastenings 28.- When the upright frame structure is raised and the braces 26 and 27 are secured to the truck frame the arts will be supported in substantially t e position shown by the full lines of Fig. 1, but by re moval of the bolts or fastenings 28, the framestructurc D and the brace members 26 and 27 will fold to the position indicated by the dotted lines, or if the frame B and the structure carried thereby be removed, then the brace members 26 and 27 will fold down substantially fiat against the truck frame. A cross bar 29 is mounted between the side bars of the truck frame, and a stepbearin member 30 is mounted substantially centray upon this cross bar, the cable Wheels 31 and 32 being mounted in conjunction with the step-bearing member. An upright 33 is provided with bearing extension 34 at its lower end and at its upper end has a cap 35 mounted, this cap being provided with a bearing extension which lines up with the extension 35i. The length of the upright is so gaged that when the bearing extension 34 is placed within. the step-beau ing opening, the extension of the cap 35 is adjacent the cross bar 20, and a bearing 36 is provided. The bearing 36 is provided for reception of the bearing extension of the cap 35, bolts 37 being provided to removably secure this Vbearing 36 upon the cross bar 20. At the lower end of the upright 33, a bull wheel 38 is provided, this Wheel being O'rooved for reception of a cable extending rom the boom swinging drums 3 and 4, and a socket 39 is provided for reception of the foot of the boom E. Cable wheels 40 and 41 are revolubly mounted adjacent the upper end of the upright 33 and are substantially in line with the cable wheels 31 and 32 as carried by the step-bearing member 30.
As has been stated, the boom E has the foot end thereof placed within the socket opening 39 formed or provided at the lower end of the upright 33, and a brace member 42 is connected from the outer end of the boom E to an eyelet 43 at the upper end of the frame D, the boom E being thus held in angular disposition as shown in Fig. 1. Cables 44 are extended from the winding drums l1 and2 over the cablewheels as carried by the upright 33 and by the step-bean `ing member 30, and then led up adjacent the boom and over cable Wheels 45, these cables having the hooks 46' associated therewith for attachment of a load. By moving the operating levers 17, the winding drums wililbe connected to be turned by the power connection from the stub shaft 10, and in consequence the cable attached thereto will be drawn in, it of course bein understood that thlisoperation will be carried out as in the case of ordinary hoisting mechanism. The boom will also be swung in the usual manner, by setting the parts for turning of the drums 3 and 4 in one direction or the other to consequently swing the upright 33 through the connection of the bull wheel 38 therewith.
When the parts as carried at the rear of the truck frame are to be removed from the truck or are to be folded down to reduce the height of the mechanism so that the truck may be more readily transported or driven from one point to another, the boom E may be removed, following which the bolts 37 are withdrawn to releasethe bearing 36. When the bearing has been loosened, the upright 33 together with Vthe bull wheel 3S can be removed by lifting the bearing extension 34 from the bearing opemng of the step-bearing member 30, and then by loosening the bolts or fastenings at 28, the upright frame D is left free to be swung down to the position indicated by the dotted lines of Fi 1, or by removing the bolts 25, this uprig t frame D together with the brace members 26 and 27 can be entirely removed from the connection with the truck frame.
Under some circumstances, as Where the hoisting mechanism is to be moved only a short distance, it may be desirable to leave the boom in substantially its normal footing, and to support the boom together with a bucket or tackle carried therefrom upon a trailer. Where this is done, it is not necessary to remove or unstring any of the hoisting cables or other tackle, and at the saine time the boom can be lowered to rest upon the frame and the upright frame structure D can then be folded. The bull wheel and the upright carried therewith will of course be retained in the mounting as shown, and when it is desired to again set up the parts for use, this can be done by manually raising the frame D, or by raising the same with a block and tackle.
W'hile the parts as hereinbefore de-` scribed can be used with very eiicient results, and in ractically all connections, due to the fact t at the boom E has the outer end thereof extended to be disposed at quite some distance from the upright 33, when the boom has been swung to one side or the other of the truck frame A and a load is caught by the hook 46, the leverage secured upon the frame will cause the same to be twisted and raised at one side, and undue strain will be placed upon the load springs, to overcome which tendency the side brace members F and Gr are provided. Bearing members 47 and 48 are mounted on the sides of the truck frame A in the rear of the mounting of the bearin s 23 and 24 by which the upright frame D is mounted, and the side brace members F and G are pivotally mounted in these bearings 47 and 48 by bolts or pivot pins 49 the arrangement of the parts being such that the members F and G can be swung out to the full line position of Fig. 2, or can be folded in to be disposed ad]acent the sides of the frame A, as indicated by the dotted lines. Jackscrews 50 are mounted at the ends of the brace members F and G, and at their lower ends have plates 51, handles 52 being provided at the upper end of the jackscrews. By this arrangement of the parts, the brace members F and G can be swung to extend substantially at right angles from the sides of the truck frame A, further movement being stopped by contact with the closed ends of the bearing members 47 and 48. The jackscrews 50 will then be tightened down to bring the bearing plates 51 thereof into proper bearing engagement upon the ground or on the surface on which the motor truck is supported, or blocks will be used, and thus the truck frame will be securely braced against lateral twisting movement, and additional support will be provided for the frame to thus take a part of the load placed thereon.
The use and operation of the parts has been somewhat fully set forth as the description has progressed, and it is therefore not thought that I need here to go into further detail in this respect. Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention; but,
I claim:
1. In a hoisting device, the combination with an ordinary motor truck including a chassis having side rails, of a supporting frame removably mounted upon said chassis, a boom detachably carried by said chassis, a hoisting mechanism carried by said supporting frame, bearing members carried by said side rails, bracing means for said boom adapted to be detachably connected to said bearing memibers, whereby the hoisting mechanism, boom and bracing members may be removed from connection with said truck.
2. In a hoisting device, the combination with an ordinary motor truck including a chassis having side rails, of a supporting frame removably mounted upon said chassis. a boom pivotally and detachably connected to said chassis, a hoisting mechanism carried by said supporting frame, bearing members carried by said side rails, bracing means for said boom adapted to be detachably connected to said bearing members, whereby the hoisting mechanism, booln and bracing members may be removed from connection with said truck, said bracing means being pivotally connected to said bearing members to permit the bracing means to 'be folded to lie flat upon the truck frame, and stay rods pivotally connected to the free end of said bracing means and adapted for detachable connection with said side rails.
3. In a hoistin device, the combination with a motor truc including a chassis hav- CIK ing side rails, of socket bearing members attached to said side rails and comprising flat attaching portions, upstanding side flanges and upstanding` end flanges connected to said side flanges to form a socket, a substantially A-shaped upright frame, bearing portions upon the lower end of the sides of said frame and comprising relatively thin depending portion, said depending portion pivotally connected to said side flanges and adapted to engage said end flanges to limi-t pivotal movement of the A-shaped frame in one direction.
4. 1n a hoisting device, the combination with a motor truck including a chassis vllaving side rails, of socket bearing members attached to said side rails and comprising flat attaching portions, upstanding side flanges and upstanding end flanges connected to said side flanges to form a socket, a substantially A-shaped upright frame, bearing portions upon the lower end of the. sides of said frame and comprising relatively thin depending port-ion, said depending portion pivotally connected to said side flanges and adapted to engage said end flanges to limit pivotal movement of the A-Shaped frame in one direction, and braces attached to the upper end of the side members of said frame and adapted for connection with said truck frame to hold the upright frame against pivotal movement.
5. In a hoisting device, the combination, with a motor truck including a chassis having side rails, of a substantially A-shaped upright frame, means pivotally and detachably connecting said A-shaped upright frame to said side rails, a thrust bearing carried by the truck frame, an upright having its lower end journaled in said thrust bearing and its upper end rotatably connected to the cross -bar of said A-shaped upright frame, a boom connected to said upright, cable guiding wheels carried |by said thrust bearing, and cable guiding wheels carried by said upright and in alinement with the bearing carried cable guiding wheels.
In a hoistingr devicefthe combination with a motor truck including a chassis having side rails, of b'earing members carried by said side rails and comprising flat attaching portion, upstanding side flanges and upstanding end flanges connected to said side flanges to form a socket, a. substantially A- shape'd upright frame, bearing portions upon the lower end of the sides of said frame comprising relatively thin depending portions, said depending portions pivotally connected to said side flanges and adapted to engage said end flanges to limit pivotal movement of the frame in one direction, braces attached to the upper end of said side member and adapted for connection with the side rails of said chassis to hold the upright frame against pivotal movement, a thrust bearing carried by the thrust frame, an upright having its lower end jonrnaled in said thrust bearing and its upper end rotatably connected to the cross bar of said A-shaped upright frame, a boom connected to said upright,A cable guiding Wheels carried by'said thrust bearing, cable guiding wheels carried by said upright frame and in alinement with the bearing carried Ca'ble guiding Wheels, and a cable guiding Wheel carried by said boom and adapted for coactio-n with said former mention guiding wheel to guide a hoisting cable.
