Specification of Letters Patent.
Pat ted Ans- 5. 1 1a Application filed May 9, 1919. Serial No. 295,978.
To all whom stenc l concern:
Be it known that we, (1) Josnrn SULWEB- SKI and 2): GorTLInn Rnson, citizens of Poland, having declared our intention to become citizens of the United States of America, residing at Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boilers, of which the following is. a specification.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a boiler especially adapted for use in the washing of clothes and similar articles in which there is provided a false bottom in the boiler receptacle that is under spring tension in its lower operative position, and which is adapted to be elevated to a convenient point when it is desired to remove the contents; of the boiler therefrom.
With the above general objects in view, the invention consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement ofparts hereinafter more fully described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts through the several views.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a closed boiler constructed in accordance with the present invention with a portion of the side wall thereof broken away, showing the false bottom of the boiler in its lowered operative position,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof with the cover removed,
Fig. 8 is a cross sectional view of the boiler proper with the false bottom shown in end elevation and in its lowered position,
Fig. 1 is a crosssectional view similar to Fig. 3 with the operating springs for the false bottom expanded and with the false bottom in elevated position,
Fig. 5 is a detailed sectional view of a portion of the boiler showing the latch arm for holding the false bottom in its lowered position,
Fig. 6 is a detailed sectional view similar to Fig. 5 with the latch mechanism shifted to permit the elevating springs of the false bottom to assume their expanded position and with the false bottom elevated, and
Fig. 7 is a top plan view of a portion of the boiler showing the side channel for containing the retaining latch.
Describing the invention more in detail, the reference numeral 8 designates a boiler especially adapted for cleaning clothes having the handles 9 for transporting the same and the outletfaucet 10 at. the bottom side thereof, there being provided an ordinary form of cover 11 for confining the steam therein.
A false bottom 12 of the samev contour as the boiler is arranged therein and is provided with a plurality of openings 13, to permit free circulation of water and Steam in the-boiler. The lower face of the false bottom 12 is provided with a plurality of depending annular sockets 14L that are so. arranged-as to be in alinement with upstanding studs 15 carried by the bottom wall of the boiler 8 while expansion coiled springs 16 have their lower ends received upon studs 15 with the upper ends thereof positioned in the sockets 14. i
A. latch mechanism is provided to hold the false bottom 12 in the lowered position shown in Figs. 3 and 5 and includes a latch arm 17 pivoted upon the horizontal arm 18 arran e'edacross the compartment 19 formed inwardly of the side walls of the boiler 8 by the semi-circular wall 20, thefalse bottom 12 accommodating itself to said curved walls bybeing cut away as at 21 to lie adjacent tosaid curved walls throughout its length, as more clearly shown in Fig. 7. The lower end of the latch rod 17 is provided with a hook 22 adapted to be projected through an opening 23 formed on the adjacent lower end of the wall 20 and in projecting position inwardly of the wall 20 is adapted to be receivedbetween the lugs 24 carried by the false bottom 12 to hold the false bottom in its lowered position as shown in Fig. 5 against the tension of the springs 16. The
latch rod 17 adjacent the upper end thereof is provided with an inwardly projecting pin 25 adapted to be extended through the opening 26 provided adjacent the upper end of the wall 20 and in projected position as shown in Fig. 6 is adapted to engage the upper surface of the lug 24: upon the false bottom 12 to limit the upward movement of said false bottom and to arrest the exerting force of the springs 16, the latch rods 17 being operated from the upwardly projecting end 27 thereof. It is to be understood that a plurality of sockets 14 and cooperating studs 15 with the associated springs 16 are provided in any number desired, and further that it is preferably desired to provide the latch retaining mechanism for the false bottom 12 at opposite sides of the boiler 8 as shown more clearly in Fig. 2.
It is thought that the construction and operation of the device will be readily apparent from the above detailed description, it being noted that when the false bottom is in the position shown in Figs. 3 and 5, the hook 22 upon the lower end of the latch rod 17 is projected through the opening 23 for engagement with the lugs 24 to retain the false bottom lowered against the tension of the springs 16. If the contents of the boiler has been boiled and steamed for a sufficient amount of time, the upper end 27 of the latch rod is engaged by the hand of the attendant and moved inwardly, thereby to release the hooked end 22 from the lugs 24 and to project the pin 25 through the opening 26 into the interior of the boiler to engage the upper surface of the falsebottom 10 upon an upward movement thereof caused by an expansion of the springs 16; In the latter position, the contents of the boiler are moved to a pointradjacent the upper end thereof and the water contained therein is permitted to drain therefrom and percolate through the openings in the false bottom.
While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is 'nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What we claim as new is 1. A boiler comprising a receptacle having a perforated false bottom arranged Copies of this patent may be obtained for for selective engagement with said false bottom to retain the same in lowered position and to limit the upward movement thereof.
2. A boiler comprising a receptacle having a perforated false bottom arranged therein, depending sockets carried by said false bottom, upstanding studs carried by the bottom of said boiler, expansion coil springs cooperating with said depending sockets and studs, a curved wall extending inwardly of the side wall of the boiler forming a compartment, a latch rod pivoted in said compartment, a pin carried by said latch rod above and below said rod pivot, openings in said compartment wall through which the pins are adapted to be projected for selective engagement with said false bottom, to retain the same in lowered position and to limit the upward tensioned movement thereof, the upper end of the latch rod projecting above the upper edge of said boiler to constitute an operating handle.
3. A boiler comprising a receptacle, a false bottom arranged therein, expansion springs arranged between the bottom of the boiler and said false bottom normally to force the false bottom upwardly, and a latch rod pivoted in said boiler adapted to engage said false bottom to hold the same in lowered position and to limit the upward movement thereof.
4. A boiler comprising a receptacle, a false bottom arranged therein, expansion springs arranged between the bottom of the boiler and said false bottom normally to force the false bottom upwardly, and a latch rod pivoted in said boiler having means to engage said false bottom to hold the same in lowered position and to limit the upward movement thereof, said means including a hook at the lower end of said rod and a projecting pin intermediate its pivot point and its upper end.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
