To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK E. CARTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Huntington, in the county of Cabell and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Guns, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in toy guns, and has for its object to provide a device of the character specified wherein means is provided in connection with the same for simulating the sound of a machine un in action, the said mechanism consistmg of a toothed wheel and a tongue of resilient material engaging the wheel, the wheel having means for rotating the same.

In the present embodiment of the invention, the gun comprises a barrel 1 and a stock 2 detachably connected together by screws 3 and 4. It will be noticed that the rear end of the barrel is lapped upon the front end of the stock and they are connected at the lapping portions. Each of the sections, which may be of wood or any like material, is recessed on its meeting face, as indicated at 5 and 6, respectively, and these recesses register to form a substantially cylindrical opening between the sections near the rear end of the barrel.

Axially of this recess is journaled a crank shaft 7 and the said shaft carries a toothed wheel 8. Referring to Fig. 3 it will be noticed that the shaft is flattened within the recess, for engaging the wheel, to constrain the wheel to turn with the shaft.

instance, resilient wood, is held by the screw 4 between the forward end of the stock and the barrel, and the free end of this tongue extends into position to be engaged by the teeth of the wheel when the wheel is rotated, to make a snapping or crackling sound.

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, it will be noted that the stock is recessed longitudinally at the tongue, as indicated at 10, the recess gradually increasing in depth from the front of the stock to the recess 6, to permit the play of the free end of the tongue.

In use, the gun is held and aimed like an ordinary gun, and it will be evident that when the crank shaft 7 is rotated a sharp crackling sound will be heard, the intensity depending upon the rapidity of rotation of the crank shaft.

I claim:

1. A toy gun designed to produce an effect in similitude with that of a machine gun, comprising a gun body having a stock and a barrel portion and having at its intermediate portion a spring operated tongue, and atoothed wheel engaging the said tongue and incased within the body of the gun and having a crank outside the gun for rotating the wheel, substantially as set forth.

2. A toy gun comprising a stock, a barrel fitted to said stock, the stock and barrel having coincident mortises forming the casement for a wheel, a spring tongue operating between the stock and the barrel, and a toothed wheel operating in the coincident mortises and engaging the spring tongue and having a crank outside the gun for rotating the wheel.

3. A toy gun comprising separable stock and barrel portions recessed on their meeting faces, a toothed wheel, and a spring tongue held in the recess and cooperating, the wheel having a crank, and means for detachably connecting the stock and barrel portions.
