his invention relates to a lamp especially designed for use on vehicles.
The ob ect of theinvention is to provide a lamp for lighting the roadway in advance of a vehicle and so constructed that the rays of light will not blind the driver of an approaching vehicle and will at the same time sufficiently illuminate the roadway in front of the vehicle carrying the lamp. A further object of the lIIVGIItIOIriS to provide a lamp with a window opening usually provided with a translucent pane of 'colored glass to constitute a warning signal.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts constituting the invention to be hereinafter specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the matter hereinafter claimed.

The device comprises a oonoidally or parabolically-shaped body member 1 having an open end and provided with a hollow supporting standard 2 the interior of wh ch isin open communication with the interlor of the body member 1. The beading 9 is s aced from the edge of the open end of the member 8 to provide a flange 10 which incloses the member 1, and the portions of the flange 10 which are adjacent to the U-shaped flange 3 when the parts are positioned are fastened onto straps 11 which are freely movable with respect to are arranged to IIIClOSe the open end of the bod member 1. These straps are provided witli ears 12 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and '3 and extending through these cars is a clamping bolt 13 which when pro erly mani ulated clamps the straps about t e open end of the member 1 for temporarily uniting or coupling the members 1 and 8 together. The front portion 14 of the member 8 is widely flaring and is equipped with a forwardly-extending downwardly-projecting shield 15. Rearwardly of the shield 15 the under face of the member 8 is open to permit the rays of light from the lam 7 to project forwardly and downwardly. lreferably formed integrally with the upper face of the member 8 is a hollow projection 16 in the general form, of a dormer window with an open 7 tion of a casing and the lower wall front end 17. The edges of the material the upper and side walls of the at 18 to form a por- U-shaped to constitute a seat for a sheet of translucent material 20 which usually consists of a pane of colored glass. On the under face of the upper wall of the projection 16 is a stop 21, arranged to engage the glass 20 for ho ding it in place and against movement.
The device is mounted by any suitable means on a vehicle using the support 2 for this purpose and the rays of light from the lamp 7 are projected forward through the member 8 downwardly onto the roadway in advance of a vehicle but are not projected in a straight line to embarrass or blind either pedestrians or the drivers of ap roaching vehicles while at the same time urnishing sufficient illumination for the use of the driver of the vehicle on which the device is mounted. At the same time and to serve as a warning the rays of light from the lamp ,are projected through the pane of colored a warning signal to glass 20 to constitute the driver of an approaching vehicle.
I claim,
' A device of the class described comprisat 19 is ing a bod member approximately parabolically-s aped in longitudinal cross section, a reflector positioned in said body member, a lamp positioned at the focal center of said reflector, said body member provided with a U-shaped coupling flange extending partially around the marginal edge deflector being 111- rial, the lower portion of said deflector being open to permit the rays of light from said lamp to project abruptly downwardly and forwardly within well defined lines and immediately in advance of the entire structure.
