a citizen of the United States, residing at Marseilles, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, :have invented new and useful Improvements inCartons, of Awhich the following is a specification. This invention relates to foldable boxes or cartons such as are made of cardboard ,or the like and designed to receive bakery and like products.
Among the objects of my invention is to improve the kind of box or carton referred to in the several lparticulars as will hereinafter more fully appear, and to provide, in particular, a relatively shallow, foldable box adapted to have packed therein'relatively narrow bakery products, such as sugar wafers, more commonly known as Nabiscos.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved form 0f locking means for the end iiapsof the box,- which locking means is particularly adapted for boxes of the shallow type. A

To lock the end Haps together, when the box or container is set up from the blank shown and described, the sections 17 and 24 at each end of the box are provided with interlocking parts, which will now be described in detail. Each end Hap 17 is provided at its free end with a locking tongue 26 having a curved edge. The portion of the flap 17 inside of the locking tongue 26 is cut away to provide an inclined edge 27 which continues inward beyond thebase of the tongue 26 to provide a locking shoulder 28. Each end flap 24-is provided,'in that edge thereof-which forms. the upper edge of the flap when the box is set up, with'an upwardly opening locking notch 29, preferably V-shaped and having inclined edges 30, 30, which diverge outwardly from the base of said notch. The inclined edge 30 adjacent the base of the flap 24 or next to the score line 25 is continued beyond 4the base of the notch 29 t0 form a locking part V31, adapted to interlock with the shoulder 28 of the locking tongue 26.
To set up the box from the blankshown in Fig. 1, the sections 14, 16 are bent upward on theiry score lines 11, 11 in an upright position to form the side or front and rear walls of the box'. The sections 24, 24 are then folded inward to extend between the side walls of the box and form the innermost end flaps thereof, said sections 24, 24
having a length 4sufficient forthat purpose.
The sections 22, 22 on the bottom wall 15 are then folded upward into an upright position so as to overlap the innermost end flaps 24, 24 on the outside thereof and form the intermediate end flaps of the box. The sections 17, -17 are then foldedinward so as to extend between the 'side walls of the box and overlap the intermediate end flaps 22, 22, and which sections 17,17 constitute the outermost end flaps of the box. At such time the end flaps 17 are raised upward a sui'licient distance so that the locking tongues 26 are in position to be inserted into 'the locking notches 29, 29, and then said end flaps 17 are pressed downward until the Y locking shouldersl 28 thereof engage the locking parts 3l on-the innermostend flaps 24, 24, the intermediate end flaps22, 22 being cutaway as at 22a to allow the `locking tongues26, 26 to extend behind the inneri'nostend flaps for suclrlocking purposes.

are folded downward thereon, whereupon the lid or cover 13 is swungdownward and its marginal flap 12 inserted between the packed articles and the side wall 16, 'the pressure of the packed articles on saidf inarginal flap being suicient to maintain the cover 13 in closed position. Said side wall 16 is provided between its ends with a notch 32 opening upward through the upper edge thereof so that the thumb or finger of the person opening the box may readily engage the lap 12 and facilitate the raising or opening of the lid or cover 13.
such a nature as to effectively lock said flaps together when'the box is set up and in use, and for such purpose it is necessary that the locking tongue have sufficient stock to withstand the strains to which the same is subjected when locking the end flaps together. I have found that by providing an outwaidly opening' locking notch 29, as shown, the base of the notch may be positioned a little above midway of the end flap in which it is provided, thus enabling the locking tongue 26 to be made substantially the full height of the end flap on which it is provided. Froin this it follows that the locking tongue 26may be made large enough to give the saine the necessary rigidity and strength required, yet clear the bottom wall of the box when locked with the flaps having the lockingnotches. By reason of such novel construction I ain able Vto adapt this type of lock to a shallow box and gain aneflective locking means for the end liaps, vwhich would be impossible in case the innermost end flap 24 was provided with an inclined locking slot positioned between its upper and lower edges, because in such an arrangement the base or locking end `of the inclined slot would necessarily be so close to the bottom edge of the flap that, to have the locking tongue lock therewith would require the locking tongue to be so small, in order to clear the bottom wall of the box,
that said tongue would not have sufficientis true, but, in order to maintain the bakery I products packed in the box crisp and fresh and prevent the shortening from being absorbed therefrom by direct contact with the wallsof the box, I provide a liningsheet for said box, adapted to completely inclose and envelop the bakery products packed therein. In Fig. 2 I have shown said lining sheet as indicated by 33 and iiattened out, with the several score lines on which it is folded indicated by dotted lines. As shown in Fig. 2, said lining sheet is rectangular in shape and provided with a substantially centrally arranged section 34, adapted tocxtend over the inner face of the betteln wall 15` vof the box. Fig. `2is a view` looking at that surface of theliningfsheet which contacts directly with the productspacked in the box, and, asshown, the:section 37 is adapted to extend over the inner surface-of the front wall 16 of the box, while thesection 38 `is adapted to extend over the like face of the rear wall 14. The section 39 is integral with the section 37, and is divided therefrom by a score or fold line 40, parallel to the score lines 35 and the edges 41,-r 42 of saidsheet. Saidy section` 39 is bounded at its endsby score or fold lines-43, 43, forming continuations ofthe scorelines 36 and intersecting the edge 41 of said sheet. 1Said section 39 is further divided vv-ithinV its, boundaries by diagonally arranged scorelines 44, v44, and whenV said section 39 is foldedlon said lines 44 and the VAline `40, said section extends into thc box in the forr'n of ataperedflap from the front wall 16 and over the top` `the articles packed therein, but beneath the flaps 19, 19, as shown in Fig. 4. At each end of said section 391 Ais an integral section 45,
boundedon one side by the score line 43, on another side by a continuation of the score line 40, `and on the remaining two sides by the edges 41 and V46 of said sheet. When the -section39 is folded on its diagonal score lines 44, the portions ofisaid section 39 between score lines 44 and 43 are folded under said section 39 and carry therewith the sec-- tions 45, 45, `which at suchtime extend into the box from the end fiapskthereof beneath said sections 39, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.` At each end of the section 37 is an integral section 47, divided from the section 37 by acontinuation ofthe score line 36,.`while b`e-` ing divided from theV section 45 by a continuation of thescore line40. `Said section 47, when the lining sheet is foldedfwith the bex, extends between thefside walls 14, 16 thereof at the Aend of the box and is located inside of ,the innermost end flap 24, as shown in Figs. 4 and 7. The sections 47 prevent the articles packed inthebox from `contacting with-the end walls of said box.

51 arranged at right-angles to each other and meeting in the diagonal score line 49, as shown in Fig. 2. After the section 48 has been folded into the triangular shape shown in Fig. 4, the score lines 35 and 36 are `now at the base of the folded section. Said section 48 is then folded upward on said score lines and brought to an upright position extending over the outer face of the innermost end iiap 24. By folding the section on the diagonal score line 49, the folded edge thereofclears the locking notch 29 in said innermost end flap 24, asillustrated in Figs. 3 and 5. Integral with the section 48 is a section 452, divided from said section 48 by a continuation of the scoreline 35. Said section 52 is divided from the section 38 by a score line 53, which is a continuation of the score line` 36. The remaining two edges of thel section 52 constitute theedges of the blank, as shown in Fig. 2. Said section 52 is divided by a diagonally arranged score line54, arranged as shown. After the section 48 has been folded upon itself on its diagonal score line 49 and swung into a position overlapping the innermost end flap 24 on the outside thereof, the intermediate end Hap 22 is folded linto its position overlapping the folded section 48. The remaining portion of the folded section 48 is then bent downward and inward on its score lines 50, 51, which at such time are superposed. In folding the section 48 in the manner stated, the section 52 is folded upon itself on itsdiagonal score line 54 and at the same time bringing `the score lines 35 and 53 tegether.` The folded section 52 is folded aboutthe part of the. intermediate end flap 22 on the score lines 35, 35 and then downward and inward on the section 45 on the score lines 55, 56, which at such 'time are one on the other. The end flaps 19, 19 of the box are then folded over the folded sections of the lining sheet, as shown in Fig. l. Between the end sections 52, 52 (Fig. l2) is a section 57 divided fromthe adjacent section 38 by a score line 58, the en ds of which continue linto the score lines 56. The section 57 is divided by diagonally arranged `score lines59', on which the section is folded upon itself,- as' shown in Fig. 4, and when so folded is swung down over the flaps 19, 19, whereupon the lid or cover 13 is swung down over the parts to close the box. The section 57 is further divided at the edge 42 and between the diagonal score lines 59 by a score line 60, which enables the section 57 when folded upon itself, as shown, to form a tapered Hap to be provided with a marginal tongue 61, adapted to be inserted between the front wall 16 of the box and the folded -portions of the lining sheet. The opposite section 39 is provided with a like score line 62, whereby the section may be folded back on itself, to prevent the section from overlapping the section 38, as shown in F ig. 1. The lining sheet 33 may be scored in the manner indicated by the dotted lines in F ig. 2, or it may be laid flat and unscored on the flat blank of the box and in setting up the box the lining sheet will be folded with the parts of the box on lines as indicated by the dotted lines in said Fig. 2. By folding the lining sheet in the Inanner described, it will be noted that the bakery products packed in the box are completely enveloped within such sheet and protected thereby from contact with the walls of the box and thereby maintained in a crisp `and fresh condition at all times. Furthermore, the lining sheet is interfolded between the several end flaps of the box so that such flaps serve to lock the lining sheet in the box and prevent displacement thereof during packing of the box, as well as during removal of the products therefrom.
Although I have shown and described one form of box and lining sheet embodying the features of my invention, yet it is to be of course understood that the several details of construction and arrangement of parts shown may be variously changed and modified without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction and arrangement of parts illustrated, except as pointed out in the annexed claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A container having connected bottom and side walls, the latter being provided at the ends thereof with flaps adapted to overlap and form the end walls of said container, one of the end flaps at each end of the container being provided with a notch opening outward through one of the longitudinal edges of said Hap, and the other end flap at each end of the container beingprovided with a locking tongue adapted to Ibe inserted into the notclnaud the notch and tongue at each end of the container being provided with integral parts adapted to interlock for holding the tongue from being swung out of the notch. 2. A relatively shallow container having connected bottom andv side `walls, the latter being provided at the ends thereof with flaps adapted to overlap andform the end walls of said container, one of the end flaps ateach end of the container being provided with a notch opening` outward through one of the longitudinal edges of said flap and with the base of said notch located substantially midway between the longitudinal edges of said flap, and the other end Hap at each end of the container being provided with a locking tongue adapted to be inserted into said notch, andthe notch and tongue at each end of they container being provided with integral parts adapted to interlock for holding the tongue from being swung lout of the notch.
3. A container having connected bottom and side walls, thelatter being provided at the ends thereof with flaps adapted to overlap and form the end walls of said container, one of the end flaps at each end of the container being provided with a notch opening outward through one of' the longitudinal edges of said Hap; one of the edges of said notch being continued into the body of the flap beyond the base of the notch to form alocking projection at the base of said notch, and the other end ila-p at each end of said container being provided with a locking tongue adapted to be inserted into said notch, one edge of said last named flap being extended beyond the base of said tongue for forming a locking shoulder adapted to engage the locking projection of said notch for holding the tongue from being swung out of the notch.
4. A foldable box or carton having connected bottom and side walls, the latter being provided at the ends thereof with flaps adapted to overlap and form the end walls of said box, the bottom wall being provided at each end thereof with a flap adapted to be folded between the end flaps on the side walls, the innermost end flap at each end of the box being provided with a notch opening outward through one of the longitudinal edges of said flap, the outermost end flap at each end of the box being provided with a locking tongue adapted to be inserted into said notch, and the intermediate end flap at each end of the box being cutaway opposite the notch in the innermost end flap, and the notch and tongue at each end of the box having integral parts adapted to interlock for holding the tongue from being swung out of the notch. i
5. A foldable box or carton having connected bottom, side and top walls, the bottom and side walls being provided at the ends thereof with flaps adapted to overlap and form the end walls of the box, said end flaps being provided with interlocking means adapted to lock said flaps togcther,the aps on the bottom wall being folded between the flaps on the side walls, and a lining sheet in said box, adapted to envelop the articles packed therein", said lining sheet being made ist from a single sheet of sheet material and adapted to be folded to have a section extending over the inner surfaces of all of the walls of the box and having a folded section 'at each end of the box, said folded Section extending over the upper and lower edges of the innermost end flap and being .doubled upon itself so. as to have one portion between the innermost and intermediate end` flaps and another portion between the intermediate and outermost end flaps and extend- October, A.
