INVENTOR I ATTORNEY TEQ A E T OFFER 7 J cann n. HA L',"-QEF ARTHAG EW Yocax'.
wran-sranronnn.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that-I,- CARL A HALL,,a citizen of. the, United States, residing :at Carthage, in the county of eflerson and State of New York, have invented certain new' and useful Improvements in Wire- Stretchers, of which the following ;is' a' specification.
. This invention relatestowireistretchers and more particularly to a device adapted to be manually operated for the purpose of:
constituting a fence whereby the wires may be drawn taut and rigidly held in a position to permit them to be fastened to a fence post during the construction of the fence.
The ilwention further aims at the provision of a wire stretcher of this character that may be longitudinally adjusted for securing the proper hold on the strand of wire which is to be stretched whereby the operating lever'may be properly set to obtain a long leverage to produce the stretching operation.
The invention further aims to provide a device of this character that will include a simple and efficient post engaging means whereby the operating lever may be held in position for permitting the lever to be turned while longitudinal adjustment of the lever may be obtained when desired.
'A further object of this invention is the provision of a wire stretcher which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily sub: jected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device showing the same mounted in connection with a fence post, and attached to a strand of wire.
Fig. 2 is afragmentary side elevation the operating lever being shown in cross section and,
Fig. 3 is a detail elevation on an enlarged scale of a portion of the wire clamping element.
Referring to the drawing, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, like numerals of reference indicate corre- Specification of Letters-Patent. J11 1y 29, i Application-filed November 22; 1917... Serial No. 203,426., I 1
sponding parts throughout the several views,
the. fence postjA is adapted to have the wire strand B attached thereto and when placing this strand in position itis necessary-to. tightlyJstretch the wire so that-it maybe held'taut after being attached to-the fence.
post. g p
Surrounding the fence post is a fastening chaln Lwlnohhas'one end rig-idlyse-cured to a plate 2 which is elongated and is disposed'veritically on one side-of-the fence.
stretching strands of wire particularlythose'- post' when the device is .mounted in position. At the marginal edge of the plate 2 opposite to that to which the chain is attached l have provided a yoke 3 which has retaining fingers 4- laterally spaced apart for V a distance equal to about the size of one of therlinks of the chain whereby one of the links may be placed in the yoke to fixedly hold the chain to the post. Integrally formed with the plate 1 is a pair of flanges 5 which, when the plate is disposed vertically as shown in Fig. 2 of. the drawing,
will be arranged in superposed relation to provide an operating space 6 between the flanges. Each flange 5 is provided with a suitable opening through which a pivot bolt 7 is extended and an operating lever 8 is mounted upon this bolt for facilitating the stretching of the wire. As shown to advantage in' Fig. l of the drawing, the operating lever includes an elongated bar 8 one end of which serves as a handle 9 for the device while the oppositeend is curved to provide an arcuate portion 10 the terminal In the barS near the end of the-straight portion thereof, I have provided an. elongated slot 14 which communicates with a series of longitudinally spaced notches 15. The bolt 7 is adapted to be extended through the slot 14 and to be received in any one of the notches 15. By moving the lever so that the bolt is received in the slot it will be obvious that the operating lever may be leverage.
bolt whereupon a suitable hold mayrbe ob tained for the purpose of acting as a focus to pull the wire as shown to advantage, in
7 Fig.1 of thedra'wing.
From the foregoing. it "will iibe 'observed that a very simple and durable Wire stretcher he's been provided the details of Whichembody the preferred form. {I desire it to be understood, however; that slight 1 changes in the-minor details of construction may 'be' made without departing from the V spirit of the inventionpr the-s'cope-o'fthe claim hereunto appended.
. i In a Wire stretcher, an operating lever 1 Witnesses:
including an elongated bar having one end curved .to provide an arcuate portion, a
"fastening device carried at the terminal of" .the arcuate portion 'for receiving the Wire,
the said elongated bar being provided near r the end of the straight portion thereof with in "presence of tWo Witnesses.
