Be it known that we, FRANKLIN L. BARBER and EDWIN `W."Wnnn, citizens'of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Trucks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,l and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in car trucks, and particularly to six-wheeled equalized passenger car trucks. To the above end, they invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined ini thel claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

pairs of laterally spaced transoms, the inner and outer members of which are indicated by the numerals 11 and 12, respectively. Each side member 9 of the truck frame is rectangular in cross section, cast hollow with open ends, and provided in its outer side wall with openings 9. leaving the ends of the side members 9 open and providing the same with openings 9 is to facilitate the casting of said side members `and the assembling of certain of the parts of the truck. The end members 10 and transoms 11 and 12 are of channel formation with the flanges of veach of said end members and the adjacent transoms 11 turned horizontally toward each other and the flanges of the two transoms 12 are also turned horizontally toward each other.
Each end member 10 of the truck frame is connected to the adjacent transom 11 hy a pair of laterally spaced angle tie barsl 13 andthe two transoms 12 are connected by a pair of angle tie bars 14 alined with the tie bars 13. By reference to Fig. 5, it will be noted that the end members 10 have a considerable drop, which extends substantially the full length thereof, and it will also be 4noted, by reference to Fig. 7, that the tops of the transoms 12 are dropped to afford shoulders 15, and clearance for a casting, which connects the members of a double truck bolster, as will hereafter be noted. The ends of the tie bars 13 are connected, by gussets 16, to the upper flanges of the end members 10, at the dropped portions thereof, and the upper flanges of the transoms 11. rlhe ends of the tie bars 14 are seated against the shoulders 15 and their vertical and horizontal flanges are riveted to the transoms 12.
End and intermediate pairs of pedcstals 17 are located directly under each side member 9 of the truck frame and have mounted therebetween journal boxes 18. These pedestals 17 and Journal boxes 18 are of the M. C. B. type, and the wheels and axles of the improved car truck are indicated by the numerals 19 and 20, respectively. Each pair of pedestals 17 comprises a pair of laterally;n
spaced members, the upper ends of which embrace the side members 9 of the truck The purpose of p icc frame and are .bolted thereto. The truck frame is 'supported from the journal boxes 18 by yokes 2 2, coiled springs 23 and equalizer bars 24. Each journal'box 18 is transversely straddled by one of the yokes 22, which is supported on afulcrum lug 25 cast with the top of the respective journal box, with freedom for limited rocking movement in a vertical plane. To hold the yokes 22 against endwise movement on the ulcrum lugs 25, shallow notches 26 are formed therein. The lower edges of the yokes 22 are upwardly beveled or curved from their seats 26 to permit the required rocking movement of said yokes with respect to the journal boxes. The equalizer bars 24 extend longitudinally within the hollow side lmembers 9 of the truck frame, have arms of equal length and also have on 27, which directly engage .depending ful# crum lugs 28 cast on the top walls of said members. Lugs 29 on the equalizer'lb'ars 24, at the ends of the fulcrum surface 27, engage the lugs 28 to hold said bars against endwise movement.
The coiled springs 23 are compressed between spring seats 30 and spring caps 31 and said spring seats aresupported onthe ends of the yokes 22 and detachab'ly secured thereto by dowels 32. The two spri/ng caps 31, at the ends of the side members 9, bear directly against the bottoms of said side members and are detachablysecuredthereto by dowels 33. All of the other spring caps 31 have stems 34, which work through apertures in the bottoms of theside members 9 and support on their upper ends the equalizer bars 24, as best shown in Fig. 4. lt will be noted that the upper ends of the stems 34 are convex and lit in concave seats in under edges of the equalizer bars 24, to permit the required rocking movement of the equalizer bars 24.
Pins 35, on the upper ends of the stems 34, loosely fit in bores formed in the equalizer bars 24 to hold said bars and stemsin assembled relation. As there is not suicient clearance between the side members 9 and journal boxes 18 for .the yokes 22, longitudinal slots 36 are formed in the bottoms of said side members to receive the intermediate portions of said yokes, and thereby permit the required vertical movement of said side 18. Castings 41 are inserted between the transoms and members of the bolster 37 and spring caps and spring bases, as will presently appear. The guides 41 are further secured to the transoms' by forming hooks or shoulders 42 on their upper ends, which directly engage the upper faces of said tran- U-shaped hangers 43 are' suspended from the lower ends of the guides 41 and underlie the members of the truck bolster 37. rEhe hangers 43 are detachably secured to the guides 41 by inserting through bores in interlocking lugs formed on said hangers and guides headed pins 44, held in positionv by cotter pins. From the above description, it is evident that the load of the car is directly on the double truck bolster and it, in turn, is supported from the main frame by lateral ino-tion bearing devices and elliptical springs.
The weight of the truck frame is applied to the journalboxes through the equalizer bar 24, coiled springs 23 and yokes 22. By the construction and arrangement of parts just referred to, each wheel is allowed to move vertically and independently of the other thereof. In this design of the car truck, there is sufficient space or clearance between the elliptical springs and wheels for the use of brakes, of the clasp type, wherein the shoes thereof are arranged to engage the wheels at substantially diametrically opposite points.
The rollers 46 and their seats in the combined spring cap and roller bases 45 and the truck bolster 37 afford suificient lateral motion for the truck frame, thus permitting the use of rigid hangers. All parts ofthe.
truck are rigid, except for their vertical movement and the lateral movement of the truck bolster. By detachably connectingthe hangers 43 to the guides 41, makes it very 'convenient to assemble the movable parts of the truck, at the time of manufacture, or in making repairs.
What we claim is l 1. In a car truck, the combination with a frame, of independent guides carried by the frame, displaceable hangers carried by 'said guides, and a bolster mounted between the guides and spring-supported from' said hangers.
2. In a car truck, the combination with a frame, of independent guides carried by the frame, displaceable hangers carried by said guides, a bolster mounted between said guides, springs supporting the bolster from the hangers, and lateral motion devices interposed between the bolster and springs.
3. In a car truck, the combination with a frame, of independent guides carried by the frame, displaceable hangers carried by said guides, a bolsterV mounted between said guides, combined spring caps and roller bases mounted between said guides and held thereby with freedom for vertical movement, springs interposed between said bases and hangers, andA lateral motion devices interposed between the bolster and said bases.
.4. In a car truck, the combination with' a frame, of. guides carried by the frame, hangers detachably secured to said guides, and a bolster mounted between the guides and spring-supported from said hangers.
5. In a car truck, the combination with a frame, of uides carried by the frame, hangers rigldly but detachably secured to said guides, and a bolster mounted between the guides and spring-supported from said hangers. l
6. In a car truck, the combination with a frame, of guides carried by' the frame, hangers carried by said guides, said guides vand hangers having interlocking lugs with alined bores through which are inserted pins that terminate within the vertical edges of said guides, and a bolster mounted between the guides and spring-supported from said hangers.
7. In a car truck, the combination with a frame having a pair of laterally spaced transoms, of a pair of guides on the inner faces of said 'transoms, displaceable hangers carried! by said guides, and a bolster mounted between the guides and spring-supported from said hangers.
8. In a car truck, the combination with a frame having a pair of laterally spaced transoms, of guides onthe inner faces of said transoms and having hook-like upper ends.
