WISE WOOD, NEW YORK, AND JOI-IN A. ISBELL, OF MIDDLETOVVN, NEW' YORK, ASSIGNORS TO WOOD NEWSPAPER MACHINERY CORPORATION, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION or VIRGINIA.
QUADRPIE AIR-BRAKE FOR ROTARY PRESSES.
` Application med April 29, i916, seriai No. 94,4759.
To all @Icom t may concern.' l A Beit known `that we, HENRY A city, county, and State ofrNew York, said ISBNLL` residing atMiddletown, inthe county f of Orange and State of New York, 4have invented a new and useful Quadruple Airlowing is a specification.
This invention relates to a braking mecl'i-V` anism for rotary web printing presses. i The principal object of the invention is to `apply brakes simultaneously to all of the large moving members of a press or deck, that is, t0 -thetwo impression and two printing cylinders, so as'to prevent the braking strains usually coming from the sudden stopping of these heavy cylinders from being transmitted through the keysV o r the teeth of the gears; also to provide asiinple construction'which will act quickly and reliably.
Reference is tobe had tothe accompany ing drawings, in which Figure l is an end view of one deck of a, rotary web press showing a preferred eni-` bodiment of this invention applied thereto,
back side of the machine. Each of the impression cylinder shafts is provided with a gear 16 meshing with another gear of the vsame size on the printing cylinder shaft `12 and driving the printing cylinder at the same surface speed. 1
A hub 19 is keyed to each impression and 'printing cylinder shaft adjacent to the smaller gear. This hub is provided with a brake band 20 in each case. One end of each brake band is adjustably connected by means of a screw 21 with the other end of the brake band of the cylinder of that pair.
A Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 22, 1919. Renewed December 26, 1918. `Serial No. 268,419.
vThe other end of 'each brake band is fastened by ap'in 22 to a link 23. This link is piv- '-oted at its opposite end to the short arm of a lever 24. This lever is pivoted on a screw `25 on the frame 10 and its long arm is connected by a bolt 2G` with means for operating it. In the form shown one of the two levers 24 of this deck is connected by the bolt 2G `with the head of a cylinder 27 while the one is supported rigidly, one being vcarried by one lever `24 andthe `other by the other lever 24, the effect Ofrthis action is to turn both levers and to tend to turn them equally.
HButif one offers more resistance than the other the oney offering the lsmaller amount of resistance willI be operated through a greater arc."` The instant thateither takes up all the looseness, it becomes for the time being a rigid member, and the other member is free to eXertI pressure in the opposite direction. The braking effect on the two cylinders of each pair is equalized because the brake bands are connected by the bolt 21.
The braking operation therefore, although performed simultaneously on all the impression and printing cylinders, takes effect in such a manner as to accommodate the conditions under which the press is being operated. As both the piston and cylinder are free members the whole braking mechanism is equalized. By this quadruple braking system all the large moving members are slowed down simultaneously, but in a sense independently. The stopping strains are equalized and the four cylinders of the deck are allowed to come to an even stop. The braking strains are not transmitted through the keys or the teeth of the gears as is the case where a whole deck or even half a deck is stopped by one brake.
Although we have illustrated and described only a single embodiment of the invention and shown it as applied to a single type of press, we are aware of the fact that modiiications can be made therein and that it can be applied to other types of presses without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore we do not wish to be limited to all the details of construction herein shown and de scribed, but what we do claim is l. The combination with two cylinders, of a brake hub for each of said cylinders, a pair of brake bands for said hubs, freely movable means for connecting` one end of each band with one end of the other band, and means for sinniltaneously operating' the other end of each band to apply the brakes.
2. The combination with two cylinders, each having a brake hub and a brake band for each hub, one end of each band being movably connected with the end oi' the other band, of means for connecting the other ends of each of the two bands, and means for simultaneously moving the free ends of the two bands together' for the purpose of applying the brakes simultaneously and equally to the two hubs.
3. The combination with a printing and impression cylinder in contact with each other, each having a brake hub and a brake band for each hub, one end of each band being adjustably connected with the end of the other band, the free ends oi the two bands being connected together, and a lever for simultaneously moving said free ends in the same direction to apply the brakes to the two hubs.
ll. The combination with two printing and two impression cylinders of a printing press deck, of a brake hub on each printing and impression cylinder, a brake band for each i of said hubs, a pair of levers for operating the four brake bands, and means for operating` the several brakes simultaneously.
5. The combination with the printing and impression cylinders of a printing press deck, of a brake hub on each printing and impression cylinder, a brake band for each of said hubs, apair of levers for operating the brake bands, and means for operating the several brakes simultaneously, said means comprising a piston and cylinder, one l connected with one lever and theother with the other lever,
6. The combination with the two impression and two printing cylinders ofa printing press deck, of a brake hub for each cylinder, a brake band for each hub, one end of each of the two brake bands of each pair of impression and printing cylinders being connected together, a pair of levers, the short 6 arm o'lE each of which is connected with the Y two free ends of one pair of brake bands, a
cylinder pivotally connected with the other arm of one of said levers, a piston therefor pivotally connected with the other lever,
whereby said piston and cylinder are supported by `said levers, and means `for introducing pressure into the cylinders to actuate'the piston and cylinder with respect vto each other for the purpose of applying brakes simultaneously to all the four 'cylin dersy of the deck. l
In' testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands.
