- WATERPROOF GLUE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED C. LINDAUER, a citizen of'the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Waterproof Glue, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the production of a waterproof glue and consists in combining certain ingredients in a particular manner.
In carrying out my invention I use approximately one (1) part by weight of casein, eighteen hundredths (.18) part powdered water slaked lime, one-tenth (.10), part sodium hydroxid, fifteen thousandths (.015) part kerosene oil, and from two (2) to two and five tenths -(2.5) parts water. Instead of sodium hydroxid I may use other caustics, anld, in place of kerosene oil, various other 01 s.
The exact proportions of the ingredients specified above, give the most satisfactory results with the caseins tried. It is possible,
however, to vary from them somewhat and still get good glue. Owing to diiferences in the properties of caseins made by various processes, it may be found necessary. at times to alter the formula slightly to accommodate individual caseins. A great variation from U the'proportions given above, however, would produce glues unsatisfactory, either on account of their water resistance, strength or ease of. application.
To prepare glue in accordance with my invention, the ingredients specified may be combined as follows: The casein, lime, and oil are thoroughly mixed together. The casein and lime should be dry and fine enough to pass through a 60-mesh sieve. The sodium hydroxid is dissolved in three times its weight in water, this water being subtracted from the original amount of water called for. The dry mixture of casein, lime, and oil is now added to the remaining portion of the original amount of water. After this mixture has been stirred for a few minutes, the diluted hydroxid is added and the entire mixture is stirred for about fifteen minutes and is then allowed to stand for an equal len h of time when it is ready for use.

It is also possible to mix the casein in water first, then add a lime and water mixture, and

aids the lime very materially in producing a smoothly flowing glue of proper consistenriy and good working life.
nstead of kerosene oil I may use paraffin oil or any other oils having similar properties, more particularly that of non-oxidization when exposed to the atmosphere. The function of this oil is a mechanical one and is used to enable the dry casein and lime mixture to be handled more conveniently than would be the case if this oil were not present, and to prevent the caustic from absorbing moisture from the air.
The oil used gives the glue particles an oily nature, but does not form a tough film around them as would be the case if certain oils, such as turpentine, or other" terpene liquids, were used.

The fifteen thousandths (0.015) part oil above mentioned, it will be noted, is less than one-half of one per cent. of the whole. It is evident then that the oil forms no substantial part of the body of the glue.
What I claim is 1. .A water proof glue comprising casein, lime, sodium hydroxid, less than one per cent. of a non-oxidizing hydrocarbon oil, and water.
2. A water proof glue comprising casein, lime, sodium hydroxid, less than one per cent. of kerosene, and water.
3. A waterproof glue comprising approximately one (1) part by weight of casein;
