THE AMERICAN SLICING MACHINE 00., *OFCHICLGO, ILELI- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 22, 1919.
Application filed March 1, 1919. Serial No. 280,006.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ERNEST K. Hoou, of Indianapolis, Indiana, and WALLAca B. WOLFE, of Chicago, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sharpeners for Slicing-Machine Knives, of which the following is a specification.
It is customaryto provide slicing machines havin rotary knives, with sharpening stones apted to be rotated by coming into contact with the bevel portion of the knife. In some machines a stone is used on the bevel side of the knife only and in other machines an additional stone is used to turn the bur back from the concave side of the knife. Our invention applies to a sharpener of this latter type, and consists in the detailed construction hereinafter described and claimed.
The figure represents a cross section of the sharpener.
The numeral 1 represents a wheel made of emery or steel which is adapted to contact with the concave edge of a knife 2.
This wheel is carried by a shaft 3, rotatably mounted in a bearing 4, supported on a yoke 5 carried by a post 6, rigidly secured to the slicing machine. a
It will be readily seen that this construction enables the placing of the wheel 1 in any desired plositlon relative to the knife 2. In practice t is wheel is inclined slightly to the perpendicular plane of the knife, and also set at a slightly advanced an le with re spect to the axis of the lmife. is causes the edge of the knife to drive the wheel, but at a slight angle across the lane of rotation of the knife, thus grin ing the edge thereof.
The wheel 1 is held in contact with the edge of knife 2, by means of a spring 7 taka inst aball bearin 8, contacting with a col ar 9 held on she 3 by means of a pin 10.
To move wheel 1 away from the knife slicing machine adapted to advance shaft 3. ThlS adjusting screw is The operation of the grinder is as follows: i
It is adjusted to a knife by manipulating the bearing 3 and yoke 5, until the proper angle is obtained.
The screw 14 is then set so that it just contacts with shaft 3 and is locked in position by means of .nut 15. Then to grind the knife barrel, 11 is backed off slightly by turning it thus releasing screw 14 from shaft 3, and allowing spring 7 to hold wheel 1 against the edge of the knife. When the kni e is sharpened the barrel 11 is advanced until screw 14 forces the shaft 3 forward, and wheel 1 away from the edge of the knife.
The adjustments the attaching of the ggnder to machines in a commercial way. are aware of the facts that there are several devices of this character and we do not claim it broadly.
We claim:
In a slicing machine sharpener the combination of a bearing; a shaft mounted therein; a wheel carried by said shaft adapted to contact with the edge of a knife; a spring mounted between the rear of the bearing and an anti-friction bearin carried by the shaft; and a barrel, moun on the bearing,
and recede; unadjustsaid barrel, adapted to contact with the en of the shaft, and means for locking it into position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
