KEYLESS PADLOCK.
Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Keyless Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.
'This invention relatesin general to looks and has special reference to a keylesspadlock. 1 One object of this invention is the production of a device which will releasablyhold the shackle in. a locked position, although when so desired a person familiar with the structure may easily release the shackle from its locked position.
Another object of this invention is the production of a keyless padlock wherein a plurality of spring pressed sliding bolts are employed for engaging the shackle for holding the same in lockedengagement with the casing, although a latchbody is employed for actuating the bolts and holding the same in a locked position or for releasing the same and retaining the same in an unlatched One practical form of construction and assembly of the present invention will be hereinafter described and is illustrated in the drawing, in'which i Figure 1 is an elevation of the keyless thereof being shown in section.

The upper bolts 12 consist of substantially rectangular elongated bars having longitudlnal slots 13 formed therein. Pins 14 pass through theslots and are carried by the cas mg 5 and as these bolts 12 are engaged by the lugs 10, it is obvious they are free to slide, although they will be directed in their movement by the lugs and pins, while the pins will also limit the movementof the sliding movement of the bolts under any condi t on. Springsupporting blocks 15 are carried by the casing 5 and have the springs 16 mounted thereon and extending thereabove to engage the sliding bolts 12. These springs are extended soas to normally exert inward pressure upon the sliding bolts 12, whereby when released these bolts 12 will move inwardly to abut against each other, as shown The lower bolts 17 are also substantially rectangular and have longitudinal slots 18 formed therein. v The pins 19 extend through the slots 18 and thus in conjunction with the lugs 11 guide the bolts'17 in their sliding movement. It will also be' noted that these bolts 17 have upstanding heels 20 projecting above their upper surfaces and adjacent their inner ends. The spring supporting block 21 is carried by the casing 5 and supports a substantially U shaped spring 22, the ends of which engagethesliding bolts 17 to force the same apart. Stems 23 extend from the bolts 17 and pass through the slots 24 of the casing 5, whereby suitable buttons 26 may be carried thereon and gripped for urging the sliding bolts toward each other, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The latch body 27 is engaged upon its side surface by the guide lugs 28, which extend parallel to each other for directing the latch body 27. The latch 27 has a reduced upper 1 portion 29 upon which is formed the arrow head 30 for purposes tobe hereinafter de scribed. This body 27 is enlarged however, asindicated at 31 and terminates in spaced feet 32, thus forming a rectangular central 3 36 to be received in notches 37 formed in the arms 8 ofthe shackle 9.
When the padlock is to be secured to a hasp or any other supporting structure, the shackle. is passed through the hasp in the usual manner and the arms 8 are then passed through the openings 7 in the casing to pass down into the interior of the casing as shown in Fig. 3. At this time, the bolts and latch body are all as shown in this figure. However, as it is now desired to lock the shackle in engagement with the casing, the button 35 of the stem 34 is shifted upwardly and thus lifts the latch body 27. Thisaction causes the arrow head 30 to be forced in between the inner ends of the sliding bolts 12, thus forcing the sliding bolts apart against the tension of the springs 16. This action causes the outer ends of the bolts to be directed into the upper notches of the arms 8 of the shackle 9. Simultaneously with the aforementioned movement of the sliding bolts, it will be noted that the feet 32 are lifted from engagement with the sliding bolts 17 Thus the slid-v ing bolts 17 are released and the tension of the spring 22 shifts the sliding bolts 17 apart and into engagement with the lower notches of the shackle 8, thusholding the shackle in a locked engagement, with the casing. The spring 22 therefore holds the bolts 17 in engagement with the shackle and also supports the latch body 27 since the feet 32 at this time rest upon the heels 20 as indicated in Fig. '2. Accordingly, the arrow head 30 will be retained between the inner ends of the sliding bolts 12.
' A party familiar with the structure and desirous of releasing the shackle grips the buttons 26 of the stems 23 of the bolts 17 and urges these buttons toward each other, thus shifting the bolt 17 toward each other and against the tension of the sprin '22. As the inner ends of the bolts 17 abut each other, the button 35, is pulled downwardly, thus causing the arrow head 30. to be retracted from between the inner ends of the sliding bolts 12, whereupon the springs 16 will shift the tumblers inwardly to abut against each other and release the shackle. At the same time, the feet 32 will fit over the heels 20 of the sliding bolts 17, thus locking the sliding bolts 17 in released set position. At this time the shackle may be very easily removed. 4
It will be noted therefore, that a very simple padlock has been provided wherein the slidable bolts are arrangedto be moved into engagement with the shackle for holding the same in engagement with the casing, although upon movement of the latch body after the shifting of two of the sliding bolts, the remaining bolts will be released and the first mentioned bolts will be held in a set condition, thus permitting of withdrawal of r the shackle. a

aving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- 1. In a device of the class described, the
, combination of a casing, a shackle extending into said casing and having receiving notches, lugs carried by said casing, sliding bolts guided by said lugs, said bolts having slots therein, pins passing through said slots, blocks carried within said casing, fiat springs extending from a plurality of the blocks and engaging certain of the bolts, a U-shaped spring carried by the remaining block and engaging the remaining bolts, the first mentioned springs urging their respective bolts toward each other,said U-shaped spring urging its bolts away. from each other, and means for urging the bolts'of the first mentioned springs outwardly, whereby all bolts will fit within the notches ofsaid shackle for holding the same in a locked condition, the bolts of the U-shaped spring being adapted to be urged toward each other, said means being adapted to be moved to engage the last mentioned bolts to hold the same in a released position and to disengage the bolts of the first mentioned springs, whereby the tumblers will disengage said shackle.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a casing, a shackle passing into said casing and having notches, sliding boltscarried within said casing, means for guiding said bolts during their movements, said bolts-being arranged in upper and lower pairs, resilient mean for urging the upper bolts toward each other, resilient means for urging the lower bolts away from each other, means extending exteriorly of said casing for allowing of manual shifting of lower bolts toward each other, said lower bolts having heels upon their upper inner portions, a latch body slidable within said casing, means extending eXteriorily of said casing for facilitating of the shifting of said latch body, said latch body having an arrow head at its upper ends,-the lower portion of said latch body-being broadened and having spaced feet, thus forming a rectangular recess, saidlateh body beingadapted to move upwardly :to cause the arrowhead toforce the upper bolts'apart into engagement with said shackle and allowing the lower bolts to move'because of their resilient means into engagement with said shackle, wherebythe shackle will be looked upon the casing, and said lower boltsibeing adapted to be shifted toward each other, whereupon the latch body maybe moved downwardly to cause the feet to fit over said heels and hold the. lower .insertible into said casing, alined bolts slidably mounted within said casing, resilient means for urging said bolts apart into engagement with said shackle to hold the same in a locked condition, means for moving said bolts toward each other to release the shackle, said bolts having heels adjacent their inner ends, and a latch body movable within said casing and having spaced feet adapted'to engage the said heels to hold the bolts in inoperative position.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing, a notched shackle insertible into said casing, slidable bolts carried Within saidcasing in alinement with each other, means for urging a plurality of the bolts inwardly, means for moving the remaining bolts outwardly, said last men tioned bolts having heels thereon, a slidable latch body having an arrow head at one end and spaced feet at the opposite end thereof, means for extending exteriorly of the casing for manually sliding the last mentioned bolts, and also sliding said latch body, and said arrow head being insertible between the first mentioned bolts to force the same into engagement with the shackle, at which time the remaining bolts will be engaging the shackle although when the last mentioned bolts are moved together, said latch body may be moved to cause the feet to engage the heels and hold the last mentioned bolts inoperative, while said arrow head will be removed at the inner end of said bolts to have the same move together, thus releasing said shackle.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing, a notched shackle insertible into said casing, alined bolts slidably mounted within said casing, means for urging said bolts apart into engagement with said shackle to hold the same in a locked condition, means for moving said copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. G.
bolts toward each other to release the shackle, said bolts having receiving portions adjacent their inner ends, and a latch body movable within said casing and having spaced feet adapted to engage said receiving portions to hold the bolts in an inoperative position.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing, a notched shackle insertible into said casing, alined bolts slidably mounted within said casing, a U-shaped spring carried within said casing and engaging said bolt for normally forcing the same apart into engagement with said shackle, means for moving said bolts toward each other to cause their inner ends to abut and to cause the bolts to release said shackle, said bolts having upstanding heels adjacent their inner ends, and a latch body movablewithin said casing and having spaced apart feet adapted to engage about said heel to releasably hold the bolts in inoperative position.
7. In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing, a notched shackle insertible in said casing, slidable bolts carried within said casing in alinement with each other, means for urging a plurality of the bolts inwardly, means for urging the remaining bolts outwardly, said last mentioned bolts having heels thereon, a slidable latch body having spaced apart feet, said latch body being adapted to extend between the first mentioned bolts, whereby all of said bolts will be held in engagement with said shackle, said last mentioned bolts being adapted to be moved inwardly to engage each other, after which said feet will engage said heels, while the first mentioned bolts will be moved together above said latch body, thus holding the latch body from accidentally moving from engagement with the last mentioned bolts.
