Be it known that I, BERNARD Josnri-r SIirLLiTo, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rolling-Mills, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rolling mills and has for its object to provide an improved form of reversing gear which dispenses with certain clutches, idle wheels and bearings and renders the whole driving gear more compact and eflicient in action than hitherto has been the case.
To this end the invention consists in employing with the rolls of the mill, a reversing gear comprising three spur pinions, two of which pinions are permanently in gear with each other and either one or both thereof, through the aid of the usual wabblers and breaking spindle, adapted to rotate the rolls, while the third pinion is coupled to the motive source of the mill and is adapted to drive either of thesaid two pinions.
The said two pinions are mounted in a strong frame oscillatably carried by the housing of the gear to permit, by the aid of suitable gearing or levers, the angular adjustment of the said two pinions to bring either of them into gear with the said driving pinion which determines the direction of the rotation of the rolls.
I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing which shows one embodiment of this invention as applied to a mill in which both the top and bottom rolls are driven and in which Figure 1 is an end view and Fig. 2 a plan both partly shown in section of the reversing gear and its housing.

Referring to the figures generally, a is the driving pinion of the reversing gear, I) the shaft of the said pinion suitably coupled to a motive power source, say by means of a clutch, 0. (Z and e are the spur pinions which rotate the rolls of the mill (not shown), and f and g respectively the shafts of the said pinions, which shafts, as usually, are coupled to the said rolls by means of wabblers and breaking spindles (not shown).
The housing of the reversing gear consists as usually of two side pieces h and i 'secured together by distance bolts 70" and having each a cap Z. is oscillatably mounted a strong frame consisting of two blocks 9 and r suitably secured together at a distance corresponding with the width of the said two spur pinions. The said housing has three segmental faces a, 0, p against which fit the top, bottom and one side of the said blocks, formed with similar faces.
In the said frame are situated the spur pinions d, c with shafts f, g mounted in the blocks 9, r of the said frame, while the shaft 5 of the driving pinion a is mounted in the said housing at one side of the pinions (Z and e.
In the drawings the said frame is shown in a neutral position, that is to say, in the position in which both the spur pinions are out of gear with the driving pinion.
In order to permit of readily adjusting the said frame and thereby bring either of In the said housing the two pinions (Z, c in or out of gear with t the driving pinion a, in the present instance, the top of the frame is furnished with a segmental worm wheel .9 arranged in gear with a worm t secured on a shaft u mounted in bearings 41 on one of the caps Z and provided with a hand wheel to.
When applying this invention to a mill in which the bottom roll only is driven, the spur pinion otherwise coupled to the top roll, is allowed to run loose in the said frame and serves simply to reverse.
In cases where only one set of rolls are driven from the reversing gear, or only slow speed is used, the clutch 0 may be dispensed with, whereas in cases where several sets of rolls are driven from one engine or higher speeds are used, the said clutch may be employed.
I claim:
1. In a rolling mill reversing gear, a housing having a gap, a driving pinion always running in one direction mounted stationary in said housing at the side of said gap, a member located in said gap and two driven pinions mounted in said member constantly in gear with each other and adapted to be alternately brought in and out of gear with said driving pinions and to simultaneously drive and reverse said pinions.
2. In a rolling mill reversing gear, a housing having a gap, a driving pinion always running in one direction mounted stationary in said housing at the side of said gap, a member located in said gap and two driven pinions mounted in said member constantly in gear With each other and adapted to be alternately brought in and out of gear With said driving pinions and'to simultaneously drive and reverse said pinions, the said member consisting of a frame oscillatably mounted in the said gap and of means in 0p- 10 erative connection with the said frame for the angular adjustment thereof.
