Be it known that WILIARD GLIPE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and highly efficient in use, and especially adapted to control the transmission of power from' the driving mean-s to the rolling mechanism of cigar making machines,'snch as described in our application Sr. No. 343,762, iiled Nov. 16, 1906, of which application this is a division. The invention consists in the novel combinations and .constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing` this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a planof one form of this controlling mechanism.

elements may be of any suitable construction.
'As here shown, the driving element includes a shaft l and a ratchet wheel 2 thereon, and the driven element is here shown as a rotating part 3 loosely mounted on the shaft l anda pawl 4l carried thereby and shiftable into and out of engagement with the ratchet wheel 2 and being normally out of engagement therewith. The ratchet wheel 2 and the pawl 4 constitute clutch members by means of which power is transmitted from the driving element to the driven element, the 'driven clutch member 4: being shiftable into and outof connection with the drivingclutch memiber 2.
The means for controlling the transmission of power controls the shifting or the positioning of the 'shiftable clutch member or pawl 41 and 'this controlling means includes two sections movable together as a l unit, one of these sections being shiftable relatively to the other and being normally in what for convenience is termed a neutral position with respect to a pair of starting members, either one of which starting members is initially movable into engagement with the shiftable section to shift said section relatively to the other section, out of its neutral position and into the path of the other starting member, which when operated 'shifts the lsections together as a unit out`of operatiifeposition, that is, out of engagement with the pawl Ll to permit the pawl 4 to engage the ratchet wheel 2.
4A spring 5 acts on the tail of the pawl 4 to movesaid pawl into operative engagement with the ratchet wheel 2, and said pawl is normally held out of its operative position and'against the action of its spring 5 by yielding means'as a spring 6 associated with the controlling means. Then the controlling means is shifted to carry the spring 6 out of engagement with the tail of the pawl 4, obviously the pawl will be shifted into engagement with the ratchet wheel by the' spring 5.
In this embodiment of our invention, the two Sections of the controlling means are respectively a slide or carrier 7 movable along a-guide 8 in a support 9, and a lever 10 pivoted intermediate of its ends at 11 to the carrier or slide 7, said lever 10 extending lengthwise of the slide. The slide 7 is provided `with a head 12 at its advance end upon which the spring 6 is mounted.
The support 9 may be any suitable part of the frame of the machine, and is usually a bracket projecting from the main frame of 4the machine equipped with this controlling means, and the section 7 is held in the guide 8 by suitable means as plates 13 lapping the side margins of the slide or carriage 7 and held in position by screws 14. The lever 10 normally occupies a neutral position and is sliiftable to either side of the neutral position, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The sections 7 and 10 are normally held so that the spring 6 engages the tail of the pavvl 4, by means of a spring 15 interposed between opposing shoulders 16, 17 on the support 9 and the section or slide 7, and as here shown, the spring is a compression spring arranged in a passage 18 formed in the support 9 below the guide 8 in which the slide 7 moves, the closed end of this passage 18 constituting the shoulder 16. The shoul der 17 associated with'the slide 7, is a pin depending from the slide 7 through a slot 19, see Fig. 4, into the passage 18.
2O and 21 are the starting members as levers pivoted at 22 upon a common aXis, corresponding arms 23, 24 of the levers being arranged to coact With the rear end of the section or lever 10, either to shift the same on its pivot or to engage the lever 10 when it has been shifted by the other starting lever.
As here shown, the arms 23, 24 of the levers are provided, respectively, with oppositely arranged inclined or cam faces 25, 26 and with shoulders 27, 28 for pushing against the lever 10 in order that bothsections 7, 10 may be moved as a unit.
The section or lever 10 of the controlling means is normally in its starting orneutral position, as indicated in full lines iii Fig. 1.
When the lever 20 is operated the cam face 25 of the arm 23 thereof engages at one side of the rear end of the controlling lever 10, that is, the upper side of the lever 10 in Fig. 1, and moves the rear end of said lever downwardly so that a portion of said rear end is in the path o'f the shoulder 28 of the arm 24 of the other starting lever 21. Hence, when said lever4 21 is operated, its arm 24 will push against the rear end of the lever 10 and move the slide 7 and lever 10 rectilinearly as a unit and carry the spring 6 out of engagement with the tail of the pavvl 4 so that said pawl 4 is moved by the spring 5 into the path of the teeth of the revolving ratchet wheel 2 and the driven element 3, which carries the pawl 4, is rotated with the wheel 2.
If the lever 2l is first pressed, its arm 24 as indicated in dotted lines so that its rearY end is in the path of the shoulder 27 of the arm 23 of the starting lever 20.. Hence upon the operation of the starting lever 20, the slide 7 and lever 10 are actuated as a unit as before.
When the starting force is removed from the levers 20 and 21, they are returned to their starting positions, by a spring 29, and the slide 7 is returned to its Starting position by the spring 15. The lever 10 is shifted to its central 0r neutral position, indicated in full lines in Fig. 1 during the return movement of the slide 7 under the influence of the spring 15, by suitable means here shown as a spring plate 30 fixed at one end` by screws 31 to the plates 13, and having at its other or free end a suitable T-shape slot 32 in which is normally located a shoulder 33 provided on the lever 7. This shoulder is formed with a beveled face 34, Fig. 4, for forcing the free end of the spring upwardly after the lever 10` is shifted to its right or left position as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 1, and the slide 7 lis actuated. When the lever 10 is in either of its shifted positions, obviously, the shoulder will not be aliiied with the leg of the T-shape slot, but will be in one of the ends of the head of the T-shape slot and hence during the movement of the slide 7, the shoulder 33 must pass under the spring plate.
When, however, the pin has passed clear of the spring plate 30, and the slide 7 and lever 10 are being returned to their starting position under the influence of the spring 15, the shoulder 33 engages one or the other of the converging cam faces 35l forming the entrance of the leg of the T-shape slot, and one of these converging faces obviously will swing the lever 10 on its pivot into its start ing position sliovvn in full lines in Fig. 1. The spring plate with` its cam faces 35 constitute means for returning the pivoted lever 10 to its central or neutral position.
This controlling lever mechanism is particularly advantageous when two operators are working on the same side of the cigar making machine disclosed in thepending application referred to, as it prevents one operator from starting the machine When the other operator is not ready. Y
Although this mechanism is particularly advantageous in connection with cigar making machines, obviously it may be used in other situations.
What We claim is:

3.- The combination of driving means including a ratchet wheel and driven means including a paavl no-rmally disengaged from the ratchet wheel and movable linto engage ment with said wheel and being revoluble therewith for transmitting motion, and a spring for automatically moving the pawl into position to coact with the ratchet wheel, yielding means for forcing the pawl from its operative position in engagement with the ratchet wheel and for holding the pawl in its inoperative position against the action of thev spring, and means for moving the holding means into and out of the path in which the pawl travels with the ratchet wheel, substantially as and for the purpose specified. l
4. The combination of driving and driven elements, means for connecting the driving and driven elements, and a plurality of independently movable starting members Vfor' controlling the operation of the connecting means, each starting member being arranged to control the operation of said connecting means by the other starting member, substantially eas and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination of driving and driven elements, the driven element including a shiftable clutch member normal-ly out of engagement with the driving element, and shiftable into engagement therewith, a plurality of independently lmovable, starting members for effecting the shifting of the clutch member' inton engagement with `the drvngelenient, and contrellng means between the clutch member `and the plurality of starting members, substantially as and for the purpose described.
6. The combination of driving and driven elements, the driven clement including a shiftable clutch member normally out of engagement with the driving element, and shiftable into engagement therewith, a plurality of independently movable starting members for effecting the shifting of the Clutch member into engagement with the driving element, and controlling means be-V tween the clutch member and the plurality of starting members, the controlling means including a part normally occupying a neutral position and shiftable :trom neutral position by either starting member into the path of the other, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
7. The combination of driving and driven elements, the driven element including a shiftable clutch member normally out of engagement with the driving element and shiftable into engagement therewith, a plurality of independently movable starting members, and means between the clutch member and the starting members for effecting the engagement Vof the clutch member and the driving element upon the operation of both starting members, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
8. The combination of driving and driven elements, the driven element including a clutch member normally out of engagement with the driving element and shiftable into engagement therewith, and means tending to move said clutch member into position to coaot with the driving element, a sliding member normal-ly holding theclutch member in i-ts inoperative position, means for normally forcing the sliding member in. one direction into cooperative relation with said clutch member, and operating means for moving the sliding member in the reverse direction, substantially as and for the purpose described.
9. The combination of driving and driven elements, the driven element including a clutch member normally out of engagement with the driving element and shiftable into engagement therewith, controlling means normally holding the clutch member out of engagement with the driving element, the controlling means including two sections, one being shiftable relatively to the other, and starting means for successively shift ing one section relatively to the other and moving the sections together as a unit from their operative position, substantially as for the purpose specified.

The combination of driving and driven elements, the driven element including a shifitable clutch member normally out of engagement with the driving element and shiftable into engagement therewith, and means tending to move and hold the clutch member in position to coact with the driving elements, controlling means for holding the clutch member out of engagement with the driving element, including two pivotally connected sections, and means tending to force said sections into operative position, and a plurality of manually operated starting members, either member operating to rock one section relatively to the other into the path of the other starting member, and the latterstarting member operating to shift the sections together as a unit out of operative position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
13. The combination of driving and driven elements, the driven element including a shiftable clutch member normally out of engagement with the driving element and shiftable into engagement therewith, and means tending to shift the clutch member into position to coact with the driving element, controlling means coacting with the clutch member and including two sections, the sections being shiftable as a unit, and
one being shiftable from its normal position relativelyy to the other section preliminary to the shifting of the sections as a unit, means for shifting the sections together as a unit in one direction, and for shifting one section preliminary to the shifting of the sections as a unit, means for shifting said sections as a unit in the reversedirection, and means for returning the shiftable section relatively to the other section to its normal position during the reverse movement of said sections substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
lll. The combination of driving and driven elements including respectively a ratchet wheel and a pawl for coacting with the ratchet wheel, the pawl being normally out of engagement with the ratchet wheel and shiftable into engagement therewith, and movable with the ratchet wheel when engaged therewith, a spring for holding said pawl into position to coact with the ratchet wheel, controlling means including a rectilinearly movable section coacting with the pawl to hold the same outof engagement with the ratchet wheel, and a second section pivotally mounted on the first section and normally arranged in neutral position, the second section being provided with a shoulder, and a plurality of operating members, one operating to rock the pivoted section from its neutral position into the path of the other starting member, andthe other starting member operating to engage the section so rocked and move the sections together as a unit, substantially as and for described. l

The combination of driving and driven elements, including respectively a ratchet wheel and apawl for coacting with the ratchet wheel, the pawl being normally out of engagement with the ratchet wheel and shiftable into engagement therewith, and movable with the ratchet wheel when engaged therewith, 4a spring for holding said pawl in position to coact with the ratchet wheel, controlling means including1 a rectilinearly movable section coacting with the pawl to hold the same out of engagement with the ratchet wheel, and a second section pivotally mounted on the first section and normally arranged in neutral position, the second section being provided with a shoulder, a plurality of operating members, one operating to vrock the pivoted section from its neutral position into the path of the other starting member, and the other starting member operating to engage the section so rocked and move the sections together as a unit, a spring plate fiXed at one end and provided at its free end with a cam, and said free end of the plate being arranged to yield to permit the shoulder on the pivoted section to ratchet under the plate, the cam coacting with said shoulder for rocking the pivoted member into its neutral position, and means for moving the sections as a unit to their normal position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
16. The combination of driving and driven the purpose elements, controlling means for controlling the transmission of power from the driving to the driven element, said controlling means including two pivotally connected sections, and starting means for rocking one section relatively to the other and for thereafter coacting with the section so rocked to move both sections as a unit, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
17. The combination of driving and driven elements, means for controlling the transmission by power from the driving element to the driven element including two pivotally connected sections, means tending to force said sections as a unit in one direction, and a plurality of manually operated starting members, one serving to rock one section of the controlling means relatively .to the other and into the path of the other starting member and the other starting member serving to engage the section so rocked and to move the sections as a unit in the opposite direction to that in which said sections are moved by the second-mentioned means, substantially as and for the purpose described.
18. The combination of driving and driven elements, means for controlling the transmission by power from the driving element to the driven element including two pivotally connected sections, means tending to force said sections in one direction, and a plurality of manually operated starting members, one serving to rock one section of the controlling means relatively to the other section, and into the path of the other starting member, and the other starting member serving to engage the section so rocked, and move the sections asa unit in the op,- posite direction to that in which said sections are moved by the second-mentioned means, and means for shifting the pivoted section to its neutral position during the movement of the sections as 'a unit to their starting position, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
19. The combination of driving and driven elements, the driven element including a clutch section shiftable into and out of connection with the driving element, and being normally out of its operative position, means for controlling the shifting of the clutch member comprising a support, formed with a guide, a slide movable along the guide, the slide having means normally coacting with the clutch member to hold the same out of operative position, and a member pivoted to the slide and normally occupying a neutral position, and a pair of starting levers for coacting with the pivoted member, each starting lever having means for shifting the pivoted member into the'path of the other starting member, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
20. The combination of driving and driven elements, the driven element including a clutch section shiftable into and out of connection with the driving element, and being normally out of its operative position, means for controlling the shifting of the clutch member comprising a support, formed with a guide, a slide movable along the guide, the slide having means normally coacting with the clutch member to hold the same out of operative position, and a member pivoted to the slide and normally occupying a neutral position, aV pair of starting levers for coacting with the pivoted member, each starting lever having means for shifting the pivoted member into the path of the other starting member, and means on the support for shifting the pivoted member to its neutral position during the movement of the slide toward its starting position, substantially as and for the purpose described.
