A wheel or head 11 is carried on the inner end of the pintle, being accommodated within a recess 12 in the engaging face of the movable jaw 4, and this head or wheel is provided in its periphery with twentyfive graduation marks or lines indicated by the numeral 13 for obtaining a fine adjustment of the movable aw in a manner thatwill hereinafter become apparent.
For a like purpose a similarly graduated disk M is carried by the opposite projecting end of the pintle 7.
If desired the barrel 9 may be knurled to permit the same to be readily grasped and turned when the head 11 of pintle 7 is not readily accessible, though I do not deem this necessary under ordinary conditions.
In order to normally hold the barrel or roller 9 in operable relation with the threaded shank 2, yet at the same time act as a means for adjusting the frame so as to consequently permit of a quick sliding adjust ment of the movable jaw on the shank, a set screw is employed and consists of a threaded shank 15 formed with a knurled head 16, the
shank being adjustable through a correspondingly threaded opening 17 in the mov able jaw and having its inner end swiveled as at 18 in the intermediate portion of the frame. By this arrangement it is apparent that by rotating the'head 16, the frame 5 will be drawn away from the shank and toward the adjacent end of the opening in the body of the movable jaw soas to consequently remove the threads 10 on the barrel orroller from engagement with said teeth 2 on the shank, thus enabling the user to quickly and conveniently slide the movable jaw on the shank and subsequently of course it is only necessary to tighten the screw so as to replace the barrel or roller in engagement with the threaded shank.
In use, assuming that the parts have been assembled in the manner described and as illustrated in the drawing, to measure the thickness of a piece of work (not shown) which for instance may be approximately two inches, the setscrew 15 is loosened so as to permit of the sliding of the movable jaw 1 so that the engaging face of this jaw registers with the two inch mark. Subsequently the screw is tightened to arrange the threaded barrellO in engagement with the threaded shank 2. Now by adjusting either the graduated head 11 or the correspondingly graduated disk 14 the distance between two of the adjacent graduations 13 thereon with respect to the center part 17, the barrel will be adjusted one one-thousandth of-an inch,
as the threads on the shank 1 and barrel 9 are so related as to cause movement of the slidable jaw through the distance of onefortieth of an inch for each complete rotation of the same. It willtherefore be seen that a very fine adjustment may be made with this particular construction.
It is believed in view of the foregoing description that a further detailed description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise,it is believedthat the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.

It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention therein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.
Having thus fully described the inven tion, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
- 1. A device of the character described in cluding, a shank having notches in one edge thereof, a rigid jaw carried by one end of the shank, a second jaw slidable on the threads cooperating with the notches in the shank,a graduated adjusting head carried by the pin for rotatably adjusting the barrel, and means for removably holding the threaded barrel in engagement with the threads on the shank.
2. In a device of the character described, a shank having notches in one edge thereof and provided with a jaw at one end, a slidable jaw arranged on said shank, a substantially U-shaped frame slidably mounted in the body of said slidable jaw for movement toward and away from the shank, said U- shaped frame having bifurcated side bars adapted to fit snugly about the shank adj acent the notched edge thereof and guide the frame during movement toward and away from said shank, a pintle rotatably'carried by the side bars of the U-shaped frame and projecting therebeyond, said, slidable jaw away from the shank, a barrel mounted on ing the rotary adjustment of the barrel 10 the pintle and having threads cooperating through a predetermined distance.
