Be it known that I, BArrIs'rA CoRTEsE, a subject of the King of Italy, and aresdent ofthe city ofNew York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sponging-Machine, ofV which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to means for operating or controlling the actuation of theA rolls for the steam sponging of cloth.
In the usual practice of these machines the rolls are operated by hand through cranks or wheels, a practice that is' exceedingly laborious, and requires a vast amount of time. Furthermore the cloth itself is not so well cared for as in theI practice ofmy improvement. By my improvement, therefore, I provide a motor, or its equivalent,v
for mechanically operating the rolls at any desired or variable speeds, and in either direction whereby the work may be performed both expeditiously, and in the best interests of the fabric. y
With the foregoing and other objects in view the inventionconsists in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and while the invention is not restricted to the exact details of construction disclosed or suggested herein, still for the purpose of illustrating ay practical embodiment thereof reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation indicating the arrangement and location of the principal parts of my improvement. i

Referring now more specifically to the drawings, I show at l0 and 11 the main section on the line 5-5 large steam rolls journaled in bearings 12 at the top of themain frame 13 with their 4axes `in substantially the same horizontal plane. rlhese rolls ordinarily are of the same diameter and of any suitable length to accommodate the greatest widths of cloth. Spaced rearwardly from the intermediate roll 11 is a inal cloth receiving roll 14` journaled in bearings 15 on the same'frame 4but the same is referred to as a basis for my improved operating and controlling mechanism.

Associated with this motor is a speed controller 17 a main switch 18, and pole changer 19, all shown as located upon a switchboard 20 in convenient reach of the operator adjacent to the primary steam roll.
At 21 I indicate a frame extension. Back of this extension and beneath the steam rolls is arranged any suitable form of base 22 having or supporting a series of three bearings 23, 24, and 25 in which are journaled a like number of shafts 26, 27, and 28 respectively all parallel to one another and preferably in the same horizontal plane, the ront ends of these shafts being journaled in bearings 29, 30, and 31 res ectively fitted in the frame extension 21. he shaft 28 is longer than either of the other two shafts and has fitted to its rear or inner end a power transmitting member shown i-n the form of a pulley 32 over which a belt 33,
or` its equivalent, operates from a motor driven at the same speed as the shaft 27,l
but in a different direction.
Below the shaft 10 of the roll l() is a jack shaft 39 havin on its front end a small -pinion 40. mes ing with a gear 41 fixed to `theshaft 10. On the rear end of the jack shaft'back of or within the frame 13 is a sprocket wheel 42 over which a chain 43, or its equivalent, operates from a sprocket wheel 44 carried by a clutch cone 45 litted loosely and sildably on the shaft 26 and adaptedv to coperate with a clutch cup 46 constituting a part of the gear 38 iXed to said shaft 26. A spring 47 lyino' within the cup tends to hold the eene spaced therefrom. rI`his cone, however, is adapted to be forced forward into frictional engages ment with the cup 46 by means of a bell crank lever 48 pivoted at 49 and having at its front end a pedal 50, while at its upper rear end is a yoke 51 having antifri`ction rollers 52 bearing against the rear end of the cone. The weight of the pedal 50 holds' the rollers 52 normally in easy contact with the rear end of the cone so that there is no lost motion with respect to the clutch setting mechanism when the operator puts his foot on the pedal. In order to reduce as much as possible all sliding friction between the rollers and the member 45, said rollers 52 are preferably conical in form and cooperate with a flat conical rear end of the cone member 45. The pedal projects from the front of the machine beyond the auxiliary frame 21. It will be understood that when the motor is running all of the shafts 26, 27 and 28 are also running. With respect to the operation of the roll 10 on which the cloth is first wound it is frequently necessary for the operator to stand at different places, as for example at the front of the machine or at the side adjacent tothe rolls 16. Hence, I provide an auxiliary pedal 53 pivoted at 54 and Vacting through an intermediate lever 55 pivoted at 56 whereby the bell crank 48 may be actuated conveniently from either pedal 50 or 53, and when it is so actuated the cone 45 is forced into frictional engagement with the cup or hub of the gear 38 causing rotation Lof the roll 10 at relatively low speed.
rI`he 'hub of the gear 37 is similar to that ofthe gear 38 and hence consists of a clutch cup 57 with which the clutch `cone 58 is caused to frictionally engage through the actuation of a bell crank 59 having at its front end `a pedal 60, and at its rear end a yoke 61 having anti-friction rollers 62 bearing Vagainst the rear end of the cone 58. This cone carries a sprocket wheel 63 through which a chain 64 operates to and around a .sprocket wheel 65 connected tothe rear end of a jack shaft 66 on the front end of which is fixed a pinion 67 meshing Wlthy a gear 68 on the front end of the shaft 11 of the intermediate roll 11. As shown the gears 44 and 63 are ,of the same diameter, but the ,upper gear 65 is materially smaller than the corresponding gear 42. Therefore,
. since the shafts 26 and 27 Ioperate at the same 4speed and the chains 4 3 and 64 are driven therefrom at equal speeds the disparity between the gears 65 and 4 2 providesthat A` th e roll 1 1 is operated at a materially higher speed than the primary roll 10. In the practice of' the invention after a suflicient quantity ofthe cloth isrolled uren berall 10 it, or a portion of it, is then rolled upon the secondary roll from the first roll. Steam is then applied to either or both of the rolls at any desired time according to the nature of the cloth or requirements in practice, the nature of the operating means for the rolls serving to facilitate the rolling action and to insure that `the steam will be applied uniformly throughout the roll or bolt of cloth.
After the cloth is steamed or treated on the rolls 10 and 11 as above set forth it is transferred quickly to the final roll 14, the operation of which is effected or controlled by means of a clutch comprising relatively fixed and movable members 69 and 70 on the shaft 28. The clutch member 69 has a hub on which is fixed a sprocket wheel 71 over which a chain 72 operates to a corresponding wheel 73 fixed to the front end of the shaft 14 of the final roll. A spring 74 acts to normally keep the clutch members separated as shown Fig. 5, but a bell crank 75 pivoted at 76 and having at its front end a pedal 7 7 and at its upper end a yoke 78 with anti-friction rollers 79, acts to move the movable clutch member into frictional engagement withthe fixed member 69 whereby the roll 14 will be driven at relatively high speed from the high speed shaft 28. With the cloth rolled in this manner quickly upon the final roll 14, this roll may be removed fromthe machine with the cloth thereon and another substituted to receive the roll .of cloth next to be treated by the apparatus.
I claim:
1. In a sponging machine, the combination with primary and secondary steam rolls, of power means to control the `Operation thereof, said power means comprising a pair .o f parallel shafts, means to Grotate the shafts at vthe same speed in opposite directions, gear connections between the respective rollsI and said shafts, and means to selectively operate either of said gear connections from a `selected shaft, said gear connections providing for rotation of one of the rolls at a higher speed than the other.
2. In a sponging machine, the combination with primary and Secamlary Steam rolls, and means to deliver a bolt of cloth thereto and therefrom, of means to control the operation of saidrolls, said controlling means including a pair of parallel shafts, means to rotate both of the lshafts simultaneously in opposite directions at relatively high speed, and independent gear connections between the shafts and the respectiye rolls, said connections including foot oper# ated clutches, one o f said gear connections providing for the rotation of one of the rolls `at higher speed than the other.
3- In a Sponsris machine, the ,CQmbnation with primary and secondary steam rolle, and means to deliver ,a bolt'of ,019th thereto and therefrom, of means to control the rotation of said rolls, said controlling means including a pair of parallel shafts journaled in the same planebelow the plane of the rolls, means to rotate one of the shafts, a pair of gears of equal size fixed to the shafts whereby one is driven from the other at the same speed, a pair of clutches vmounted on the respective shafts and coperating with the hubs of said gears, said clutches carrying a pair of sprocket wheels, a pair of sprocket chains OperatingoVer said sprocket wheels, means to selectively setone or the other of said clutches whereby the corresponding chain is driven, and gear connections between said chains and the respective rolls whereby either desired roll is operated.
4. In a sponging machine, the combination with a series of rolls journaled for rotation in substantially the same plane, and means to deliver a bolt of cloth to the first roll of the series, of means to control the rotation of any of the rolls in either direction, said controlling means including a motor, a series of parallel shafts journaled in the same plane below the plane aforesaid, driving means between the motor and one of said shafts for rotation thereof at high speed, gear connections between the last mentioned shaft and the other Shafts of the series whereby said others are rotated at the same speed, but at a lower speed than the driving shaft, Va series of clutches mounted on the respective shafts, and a series of sprocket chain connections between said clutches and the several rolls.
5. In a sponging machine, the combinationwith a primary steam roll, a frame supporting the same, and roller means to deliver cloth to and from said steam roll, of means to control the rotation of the steam roll, said controlling means including a shaft j ournaled below the roll, power means to rotate the shaft, a clutch mounted upon the shaft, one member of the clutch being connected to the shaft and the other member of the clutch being movably related thereto, gear connections between the mov able clutch member and the steam roll, and means to set the clutch, said clutch setting means being accessible for operation by the operators foot at either the front or side of said frame. v
6. In a sponging machine, the combination with a primary steam roll, a frame supporting the same, and roller means to deliver cloth to and from said steam roll, of means to control the rotation of the steam roll, said controlling means including a shaft j ournaled below the roll, powermeans to rotate the shaft, a clutch mounted upon the shaft, one member of the clutch being connected to the shaft and the other member of the clutch being movably related thereto, gear connections between the movable clutch member and the steam roll, and means to set the clutch, said clutch setting means comprising a bell crank lever having a pedal at one end and an auxiliary pedal operating on said bell crank in a plane at right angles to the first mentioned pedal.
In a sponging machine, the combination with a steam roll, and means to deliver a bolt of cloth thereto and therefrom, of
means to control the rotation of said roll, said controlling means including a shaft parallel to the axis of the roll, power means to operate the shaft in either direction, a clutch member xed to the shaft, a clutch member mounted loosely and slidably upon the shaft, a gear mounted upon the slidable clutch member, gear connections between said clutch gear and the roll, and means to operate the clutch, said clutch operating means including a bell crank pivoted below the shaft and having on one end a pedal and on the other end an upstanding yoke extending to opposite sides of the shaft, and a pair of rollers journaled upon the ends of the yoke and having constant rolling contact by virtue of the weight of the pedal with the end of the slidable clutch member, said rollers being coaxial and perpendicular to the axis of the shaft.
8. In a sponging machine, the combination with a steam roll, and means -to deliver a bolt of cloth thereto and therefrom, of means to control the rotation of said roll, said controlling means including a shaft parallel to the axis of the roll, power means Ito operate the shaft in either direction, a clutch member xed to the sha'ft, a clutch member mounted loosely and slidably upon the shaft, a gear mounted upon the slidable clutch member, gear connections between said clutch gear and the roll, and means to operate the clutch, said clutch operating means including a bell crank lever pivoted below the shaft and having an arm projecting forward terminating in a foot pedal and having its other arm consisting of a yoke extending upward on opposite sides of the shaft, anti-friction rollers journaled upon the arms of the yoke in the same horizontal plane as the axis of the shaft and having constant rolling contact with a slidable clutch member, and auxiliary pedal devices pivoted for actuation of said bell crank in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the bell crank.
