and ABRAHAM Sorteer-IAT, residinO EARL S. BOYNTON, 0F EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, AND ABRAHAM SCHACHAT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNORS TO SLOCUIVI, AVRAIVI & SLOCUM LABORATORIES, INC., OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
GAGE.
Application led May 11, 1917.
To all whom t may concer/n:
Be it known that we, EARL S. BoYNroN g, respectively, at East Orange, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, and at Brooklyn, borough of Brooklyn, city of Greater New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gages, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates togages, and more particularly to that class known as snap gages of the adjustable type, and has for its primary object to provide an improved construction of measuring plugs and their operative parts, whereby said plugs not only may be advanced by their setting screws, but also may be retracted thereby, and without rotation thereof.
Our invention also contemplates certain minor novel details of construction, as hereinafter more definitely will be pointed out and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of our im-A tional view taken on the line III-III of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail transverse sectional view taken on the line IV-IV of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the locking washer.
Fig. 6 is a detail side elevation of one of the measuring plugs.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views.
The body or stock 1 of the gage is substantially U-shaped, and at one side is provided with an anvil 2 of steel or other hard metal, the same being retained removably in position by means of screw bolts 3 passed through one arm 4 of the body or stock 1, and having their heads seated in recesses 5 in said body or stock, as best seen in Fig. 2. In the other arm 6 of the body or stock 1 are located two measuring plugs 7 and 8, but as the construction of these two plugs and their operating parts is identical, a description Specification of Letters Patent.

serial No. 167,913.
of one of the same will suiiice for both. rlhus, the plug 7 has its inner face trued and is beveled at 9 at its upper edge better to receive and guide the article to .be gaged in its passage past the same, and is also flattened on one side at 10 for apurpose hereinafter to be described. Said measuring plug is movable longitudinally in a steel sleeve 11 permanently inserted into the arm 6, said sleeve being interiorly screw-threaded to receive a screw-threaded plug 12. The latter at its inner end is reduced in diameter at 13, and said reduced portion is formed with an annular groove 14, as best seen in Fig. 3. Said reduced portion 13 is introduced into a recess 15 in the outer end of the plug 7, which latter is grooved annularly at 16 on its exterior surface, the wall separating said groove from the interior recess 15 being cut-away on diametrically opposite sides at 17 to receive a washer 18 provided with a recess 19 extending from one side of the same nearly through to the opposite side. As observed from Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing, it will be seen that when these parts are assembled the groove 14 of the reduced portion 13 of the plug 12 registers with the groove 16 in the plug 7 and that the exterior diameter of the washer 18 is the same as the exterior diameter of said plug 7, said washer fitting into the groove 16 and projecting into the cut-away portions 17 thereof to engage in the groove 14 of the screw 12, thereby locking said screw 12 and plug 7 together against independent longitudinal movement, but at the same time permitting relative rotary movement, so that said screw 12 may be rotated to advance or retract said plug without imparting its rotary movement thereto. In one side of the arm 6, opposite the plugs 7 and 8, are provided screw threaded openings to receive screws 20, the latter adapted to engage in the flattened portions 10 of said plugs 7 and 8 to retain the same against rotation, said screws also serving, when advanced tightly against said plugs 7 and 8, to retain the latter against any movement, either longitudinal or rotary.
In operation, the plugs 7 and 8 are adjusted so that the plug 7 will permit an article whose exterior diameter is to be gaged, and which is not too large, to pass between the same and the anvil 2, while the plug 8 is to be advanced a little closer to the anv1l2, and.
suiiiciently to prevent an article which is not too small to pass therebetween. Thus, said plugs will deliinit the two extremes7 and an article which will pass the plug 7, but will be stopped by the plug 8, will be o1e the proper gage.
By our improved construction, we provide for the adjustment oit the plugs 7 and S without any rotary movement being` imparted thereto, which is highly desirable, and at the same time provide for their ret "action through the screws 19,.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
L. A gage, comprisirg a stock, an anvil therein, an. axially movable measuring plug in said stock recessed in one end, a screwplug in said stock having a reduced and grooved end adapted to enter the recess in said measuring plug, and a washer adapted removably to engage said measuring plug and the groove in said screw-plug to retain the two together but permitting relativerotary motion.
2. A gage, eoinprisinga sto-ek, an anvil therein, an axially movable measuring plug in said stool; recessed in its end away from its anvil and grooved annularly outside of said recess, said groove being cut into said recess at diametrically opposite points, a screw-plug in said stock having a reduced and grooved end adapted to enter the recess in said measuring plug, the grooves in said elements registering with each other, and a washer slotted to fit the groove in said measuring plug and to lie within the cutaway portions thereof to engage the groove in said screw-plum In testimony whereof, we have hereunto set our hands this 10th day of May, 1917.
