1 '0 all w/wm it may concern Be it known that I, Roronns STAGG KASQ son, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Keeseville, in the county of Essex and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Brooder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention in its present form is more particularly designed for embodiment in a brooderhavinga coal stove, though the in-v features to the use of a coal stove.
The nature of the invention and the advantages of the structural embodiment given as an example will be understoodfrom the following description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar reference characters indicatecorresponding parts in all the views. Figure 1 is a transverse verticalsection of a brooder andits heater;

' In the illustrated example of my invention a stove body '10 of a suitable type is employed, the body shown being in general of a Well known form. The body is provided with a base 11 to receive an ash pan, the ash box being closed by adoor 12, and, in the preferred form, supported on a stand 13 secured by stove bolts 13 to the annular flange 10* of the stove body.
An arcuate water trough 14 may be provided on the stove body to receivewater for maintaining the proper degree of humidity.
The hover includes a curtain 15 depending from a iiat top 16. The top is formed in sections as hereinafter explained and the sections may be provided with reinforcing strips 17 at the under side. The hover is supported on the stove'body 10 for which purpose a super-structure is secured to the top of the stove. Said super-structure advantageously is in the form of a ring 18 secured by bolts 19 which pass through aninturned flange 20 on the upper edge of the ring and through the top 21 of the stove. 'lhe ring at the b0l3tl111, at intervals, is provided with angular, depending an upturned hook or whichprojects through the/stov at the angle a slot 25 in the ring so that the upper end of the hook engages the inner surface of the ring above the said slot. On each arm 23 at the base of the hook 24, lugs 26 are cast to bear against the outer surface of the ring 18 at each side of a slot The arrangement serves to-support the arms 23 with the upper surfaces thereofflush with the upper surface of the ring 18.

The height of the ring 18 and the positions of the trunnion's 29*- are such as to permit the lid to have clearance beneath the hover top lfi.

A smoke outlet 31 is formed in the stove top rearward of the fuel opening, and in order to provide a simple and eflicient check draft, a box 32, generally rectangular, is secured to the stove top over the outlet 3l by means of bolts or screws 32, said box having a round collar 3 cast thereon at the top to receive the stove pipe 30. In the back of the box 32 is a vertical check draft opening 34:, controlled .by a check draft damper 35 mounted on horizontal pivots as at 36, (Fig. 1).
It is to be observed that the check draft opening'34 is within the hover, that is to say, beneath the hover top 16. The'check draft 35 is thermostatically controlled and gr therefore, when the same is opened to admit air to the box 32 and stove pipe 30, there'-' by checking the draft through the'opening 31, the air admitted to the stove pipe will be the hot air taken from the interior of the brooder at the top. I thus iinmedi'ately reduce the temperature. of the air in the;
' brooder instead of ,bein'g s'olely dependent' on the cooling of the stovegfso that the chicks are thus promptly relieved of the excessive heat immediately upon the operation of the thermostat. In order that air may freely passto the check-draft Opening 34 from all sides-of the brooder, the ring 18 is formed with side openings 18 at various points so that air may pass into the ring-18 from all. directions to finally escape at the opening 34;. I
The check-draft damper 35 has a hooked arm 37 projecting from the back thereof through the adjacent opening 18 in the adjust their relation. The fixed arm is secured to the stove in any suitable manner as by stoveholts 45. The rod 38 connects with the lower arm of the thermostat at 43 and extends upwardly through an opening 44: in the fixed arm.
. The fuel lid 29, it will be observed from Fig. 2, has the lifting knob 46 thereof disposed nearer to one end than to the other and thereby said knob will clear the box 32 and permit the lid 29 to be supported in inclined position against the said box 32. 1 I
The described construction enables me .to' provide a-Ii ample fuel opening in the top of a broader stove of the type illustrated. and to do this is exceedingly difficult owing to the comparatively. small area of the stove top" and because of the space taken up by the hue and check draft devices. At the same time the construction promotes simplicity and convenience. in the check draft devices.
I provide in the base of the stove a nonvariable draft inlet beneath the grate and of predetermined limited capacity, for which purpose holes 4:7 are produced in the base preferably disposed vertically and located at the front above the ash door 12. Said ash door 12, I make without openings in order that when in place, it will effect a complete closure of the ash box except for the provision of the non-variable air holes 47, which latter, therefore, form the sole means for the admission of air beneath the ate 48. The draft inlet therefore is wholly independent of the thermostatic control Of the stove through the check-draft. The capacity of the inlet openings 47 is such as to supply the right amount of air to the stove for promoting combustion when the draftthrough the opening 31 is unchecked sustaining the combustion when the check draft is opened.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a bro'oder, a stove having a draft outlet in the top thereof, a box on the stove at said outlet, said box having a collar at the top to receive a stove pipe, and the box formand is also ample to admit suiiicient air for ing a flue passage establishing communicationbetween said draftoutlet and said stove pipe collar, and having a check draft opening below the collar, a super-structure on the stove additional to said box, a hover supported on said super-structure above said check draft opening so that the interior of the hover may be in communication with the said check draft opening, and means to open or close said check draft opening to establish or disestablish communication between the interior of the hover and the check draft opening, without affecting the communication between the said draft outlet in the v stove top and the said flue passage and without affecting communication between the said flue passage and collar.
2. In a brooder, a stove having'a draft outlet opening in the top thereof, who)! on the stove at the said opening, said boxhaving a collar at the top to receive a stove 131138,
and having a check draft opening below said collar, a movable closure for said check draft opening, a ring on the stove. at the top and rising therefrom above the check draft opening, and outside of the said'box,and a hoverhaving the top thereof supported on the top of the said ring, the'said check draft opening establishing communication between the'interior of the ring and the said box, the said ring having openings therein to admit air from beneath the hover in various directions to the said check draft opening through the said ring.
3. In a brooder, a stove having a draft outlet opening in the top, a box on the stove rising from the top thereof at the said open ing, said box having a collar thereon to receive a stove pipe, and having a check draft opening below said collar above the stove top, a movable closure for said check draft opening, a separate ring on the stove top and extending outside of said box, said ring rising from the stove top to a height above the said check draft openiiw, said closure having an arm extending outwardly therefrom through the said ring, and the ring having an opening to admit air therethrough to the cheek draft opening, thermostatically actuated means connected with the said arm, and a hover having the top thereof above the said openings and supported by said ring.
4. In a brooder, a stove, a ring on the stove at the top and rising therefrom, a hover having the top thereof covering the said ring, a series of arms detachably connected with the said ring and extending radially beneath the hover top to afford support to the same, said stove having a draft outlet in the top, a box on the stove top at the said outlet opening within the ring, said box having a check draft opening, and the ring having an opening to admit air from the interior of the hover to the section being adapted to be raised and lowered to afford access to the fuel opening, the ma or axis of the said fuel opening correspondlng 1n direction with the axis of the 4 hinge means of the hover.

5. In a brooder, a stove, a hover, means to support the hover above the stove top, said stove top having an oblong fuel opening, a lid for said oblong opening, a structure on the stove top at the back of the fuel opening adapted to receive a stove pipe, thesaid hover being formed of a relatively fixed section and a hinged section, said relatively fixed hover section having a hole therethrough for the passage of a stove pipe, the major axis of the oblong fuel opening corresponding in direction with the line of the hinge connection of the hover sections, said lid being rockably supported on the stove top to swing in a vertical plane beneath said fixed hover section from a closed position towardsaid stove-pipe supporting structure.
6. In a brooder, a stove, a hover, means on the stove and rising above the top thereof,
supporting said hover spaced from the stove top, the said stove top having a central oblong fuel opening, and having a draft outlet near the back of the said stove top, a box on the stove topat said outlet, a collar on the a box to receive a stove pipe, the said box having a check draft opening, means to control said opening, an oblong stove lid rockably mounted on the stove top to swing to and from the said box, anda knob on the stove 7. In a brooder, a stove, a hover, means on the stove and rising above the top thereof supporting said hover spaced from the stove top, the said stove top having a central oblong fuel opening, and havinga draft outlet therein near the back of the said stove top, a box on the stove top at said. outlet, a collar on' the .box to receive a stove pipe, the said box having a check draft opening in the rear side thereof, means to control said opening, an oblong lid for the fuel opening pivotally mounted on the stove top to swing upwardly against the front of said box, the said hover being formed in sections, the rear relatively fixed section being at an elevation to afford clearance for the swinging of the stove lid and having a hole therethrough for the passage of a stove pipe, the front section being adapted to be raised and lowered to afford access'to the fuel opening, the major of the fuel opening corresponding in direction with the axis of the hinge means of the hover.
8. In a brooder, a stove body having a fine at the top and a. check draft in the' flue, a stove base having an ash door opening, and an ash door having no draft opening and forming when in place a complete closure vat all times with the interior of the hover both when the check draft is open andwhen said draft is closed.
