IMPROVEMENT IN CARTRIDGES FOR FIRE-ARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent'No. 131,018, dated September 3, 1872, antedated August 28,
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC M. MILBANK, of Greenfield Hill, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Cartridges for Breech-Loading Fire-Arms and the following is declared to be a correct description of the same.
Cartridges have been made with a flat base secured to the sheet metal of the cartridgecase at the base or bottom thereof; but in such case the angle of the sheet metal between the sides and base is not protected, and it is the most likely portion to split open, because the metal is strained in the manufacture and the barrel of the gun very seldom fits this portion of the case tightly. In other instances the base has been made as a cup, extending more or less along the cylindrical sides. In this case the sheetmetal sides are not parallel, but have to be contracted sufficiently to pass into the cup.
My invention consists in ametallic cartridgecase made of a sheet-metal cylinder and its base, to which is attached, by a hollow teat, a circular base having a flange around its edge, so that the end of the sheet-metal case is received into a recess that protects the angle of such case and supports the same, and the edge of this base is acted upon by the mechanism in the gun that draws out the cartridge-case, as usual. This base serves for supporting the case equally as well as the cup, and avoids the contraction of the case, as aforesaid.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a section of the sheet-metal case, and Fig. 2 represents the same with the base connected thereto.
The case a is made cylindrical, with a rear end or base, but without the usual flange. The base bis made of metal, with a circular flanged edge, 0, forming a recess, into which the rear end of the case a is inserted, as in Fig. 2, so that the angle of said case a is protected and strengthened, as aforesaid. The base b is connected to the case a by the teat e, which may project from the base I) through a central hole in the rear end. of the case a, and be turned over and riveted; or the teat 6 may project from the case a and pass through a hole in the base I). The hollow teat e is of a size and shape adapted to receive the priming-tube t, which may be filled with detonating material'mixed with sand and inserted in a plastic state.
I claim as my invention The cartridge-case, consisting of the metal cylinder a and base 1), herein described, having a circular flanged edge, within which the case a. is inserted and secured by the teat e, as and for the purposes set forth.
