ELASTIC-FLUID TURBINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ()soAn JUneeunN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elastic- Fluid Tlurbines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to elastic fluid turbines, and particularly to turbines,
such as marine turbines, which have one or more reversing stages, usually put in the exhaust end of the turbine, with nozzles and buckets set in the opposite direction to those of the ahead turbine stages. The object of my invention is to provide an improved structure and arrangement for supplying a cooling medium to the reversing wheels or stages of such a turbine for cooling the same so as to prevent overheat ing, and for a consideration of what I belicve to be novel and my invention, atten tion is directed to the accompanying specification and the claims appended thereto.

Referring to the drawing, 5 indicates the forward or ahead section or element of an elastic fluid turbine, (3 the conduit through which elastic fluid is admitted thereto, and 7 the exhaust conduit. In the exhaust end of the turbine casing is arranged a reversing section or element 8 to which elastic fluid is admitted from a chamber 9 supplied from a suitable conduit (not shown). The turbine may be of any suitable design or type, for example, an impulse turbine, a reaction turbine or a combination of the two, and it will be understood that the present instance wherein I have shown a Well-known type of impulse machine is to be taken only by way of example.
In the present instance the ahead or for-- ward section is divided into stages by nozzle carrying diaphragms 5 and between the diapl'n'agms are bucket wheels 5 the buckets of the last wheel. exhausting into the exhaust conduit 7. The reversing section 8 is shown as comprising two stages separated by a nozzle diaphragm 8. In the first stage is a wheel 8 carrying two rings of buckets and in the other stage is a wheel 8 carrying a single ring of buckets. The wheels of both the tor-ward and reversing section are carried on the same shaft.
As is well understood, when the forward section or element 5 is in operation, the reversin section or element 8 is running idle in the vacuum which exists in the exhaust end of the casing and to cool the turning parts of the reversing section I take exhaust elastic fluid from the last ring of buckets of the forward section and convey it by means of a suitable conduit 10 to a region adjacent the high pressure end of the reversing section. Such discharged elastic fluid from the ahead turbine section contains a certain percentage of moisture and hence is excellent t'or cooling purposes. Conduit 10 may be simply in communication with the euhaust casing but preferably I provide it with an oval shaped extension 11 (Fig. 2) which extends forward to a point adjacent the last row of buckets and which catches a certain amount of exhaust fluid as it issues from said buckets and conveys it to conduit 10. through which it flows to the reversing section. in conduit 10 is a suitable valve to prevent flow through it in the reverse direction and such valve may be a hand operated valve or an automatic valve. In the present instance a simple automatic check valve 12 is indicated which will close in case elastic fluid tends to flow from the first stage of the reversing element through conduit 10 to the exhaust housing, a thing which would occur whenever the reversing element is put into operation.
By the above described arrangement I provide a very simple cooling arrangement which is eiiieient for the purpose intended and which possesses the substantial advantage that it utilizes exhaust elastic fluid and hence causes no waste of fiuidwhicli might be utilized in the running of the turbine;
Iii-accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes. I have described he miner ple of operation of my invention, togetherv with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is only illustrative andthat the invention can be carried out by other means.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1'. In an elastic fluid turbine, an ahead section, a reversing section, and conduit means for conveying elastic fluid discharged from the ahead section to the reversing section to cool the latter when it is running idle.
2. In an elastic fluid turbine an ahead sec tion, a reversing section, and conduit means which extends from a point adjacent the last row of buckets of the ahead section to a region adjacent the high pressure end of the reversing section for conveying thereto elastic fluid to cool the reversing section when it is running idle.
3. The combination with an elastic fluid turbine having an ahead section and a reversing section arranged at its exhaust end, of a conduit for conveying exhaust fluid issuing from the ahead section to the reersing section to cool it when the reversng section is running idle.
4. The combination with an elastic fluid turbine having an ahead section and a reversing section arranged at its exhaust end, of a conduit extending from a point adjacent the last roW of buckets of the ahead section to the reversing section for conveying exhaust fluid thereto to cool the reversingv section when it is running idle.
5. In combination, an ahead turbine element,a reversing turbine element, the rotor of said reversing turbine element running idle in vacuum when the ahead turbine element is in operation, and conduit means for conveying exhaust fluid from the last row of buckets'of the ahead turbine element to the reversing turbine element to cool the rotor of the reversing turbine element.
6. In combination, an-ahead turbine element, a reversing turbine element, the rotor of said reversing turbine element running idle in vacuum when the ahead turbine element is in operation, conduit means for conveying exhaust fluid from the last row of buckets of the ahead turbine element to the reversing turbine element to cool the rotor of the reversing turbine element, and a shutoff valve in'said conduit means.
7. The combination with an elastic fluid turbine having an ahead. section and a reversing section arranged at its exhaust end,
of a conduit for conveying exhaust fluid issuing froin the ahead section to the reversing section to cool it when the reversing section is running idle, and a check valve in said conduit.
