This invention relates to printing mecha-i' nismv for check, ticket or receipt issuing machines and the like and more particularly to the means for adjusting attached and previously printed checks, tickets or receipts, etc., in exact position to he severedv at the proper dividing line, to receive a printing impression at the proper printing line from a printing device in the machine or for any other purpose.
The principal object of the presentinvention is to provide means for adjusting previously printed o'r made up checks, tickets or receipts comprisingr a strip, so that the check, ticket orpreceipt to be issued will he severed at the proper dividing line and so that recording means, positioned in the machine, will record data thereon at the proper line.

With the ordinary forms of feeding mechanism, such as coperating feeding rollers,
it has been found that previously made up checks, tickets orl receipts are not uniformly fed into severing or printing position. ln-
accuracies in the feeding by these Iforms of feeding mechanism are due, among other causes. to' the difference in the thickness ot' the ticket, check or receipt strip, and to slight variations in the length of the checks, tickets or receipts which theoretically are of the same uniform size. lt' there is 'a slight variation in the strip, the checks, tickets or receipts are severed or printed a little out of the intended lines and it the variation continues through the strip so that the strip is fed a slight distance too tar or too little at each movement of the strip, the variations will appear more and more for each succeeding operation and after a While the strip will be severed and printed so far from the proper dividing and printing lines as to spoil the'checks, tickets or receipts. 1n the present invention this objection or detect is overcome, as the device, forming the subject matter of the present invention, is provided with spring pressed fingers for engaging in regularly spaced notches in the strip to move the checks, tickets or receipts in their proper positions to be severed and printed upon.
The present invention in the preferred form vot' embodiment disclosed herein is shown applied to a cash register for adjusting previously printed receipts in position to be severed and printed upon. It is not. intended, however. to limit the invention to the .present form ot' embodiment as it is adapted equally aswell for use in ticket or stamp vending machines, perforating machines, time recorders, voting machines and the like without departing from the spirit of the present invention. The. receipts issued by the present machine will be so called throughout the present specification but it is to be understood tha-tthis term is considered broad enough to include checks, cards,

1(Vith these and incidental objects in View the@invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts the essential elements of which are set forth in appcl'ide-d claimsand a preferred form of embodiment of which is hereinafter described with reference to the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification.

The present invention for illustrative purposes, has been shown in the present application applied to a printingr mechanism of the type disclosed in the present applicants Patent No. 1,198,492, dated September 19, 1916, and based upon an application y 30''tiled November 15, 1913. The printing mechanism in the present application as well as `in the above mentioned patent is shown attached to a type of cash register well known on the market and shown and described in United States Letters Patent No. 580,378, granted April 13, 1897, to J. P. Cleal and F. A. Reinhard.
As the type ofmachine to which the present improvement is shown applied is fully described and illustrated in the patent just mentioned, it will be unnecessary to describe the same in detail herein. buttor the purposes of illustration a briet1 description ot' the principal mechanisms of a machine of that type will be given. The operating mechanism is shown .in Fig. 3 and comprises an operating handle 10 rigidly connected to a. pinion 11 meshing with a large intermediate-gear l2. This intermediate gear .12 meshes with a gear 13 which in turn meshes with a gein' 14 which is ,rigidly mounted on the shaft 15 and indicated4 in the drawings by dotted circles. This gearing is so'propoi-tioned that upon every two complete rotations of the operating handle the shaft 15 is given one complete rotation.

The keys 16 are arranged in banks and the number of banks provided depends on the. registering capacity desired of the machine. The operating members 17 carry pins 21. there being one pin on each member, and these pins project into cani slots 22 formed in arms 23, each of which is tast to the inner end of one of a series of nested sleeves 24 which project to the right and through suitable operating connections (not shown) adjust differentially a series of amount type wheels (Fig. 2) to a position appropriate to the adjustment of the operating members 17 under the control ot the keys 16. An initial type wheel 26 and a special type wheel 27 are positioned differentially under the control ot' initial keys and special keys (not shown) in the same manner as the amount type wheels are adjusted.

The right hand sidearm 42 bears a roller (not shown) whichA projects into a cam groove not shown) termed in a disk 45 (Fig. 4) fast on the shaft 46. The cam groove in the disk 45 is so constructed that during the operation of the machine and after the receipt to be printed has been adjusted in its proper position the platen is raised once to take an impression from the type carriers on the receipt. The platen frame 41 (Fig. 3) is guided in its operating movements by the engagement of a stud 39 mounted on the frame 41 in the slot formed in a stationary guide plate 4l. The shaft 46 is given one complete rotation at each operation of the machine through the train of gears shown in Figs. 3 and i. One of these gears -l' isfast on the shaft 4:6 and meshes with a gear S fast on a shaft 49. The gear -18 in turn meshes with a gear 50 and the latter gear meshes with a. gear 51 fast on a shaft The last mentioned gear meshes with a gear 53 which is fast on the shaft 15 and indicated by dotted circles in Fig. 3. )Vith this train of gears one complete rotation of the shaft 15 at each operation of the machine is imparted to the shaft V16 and the shafts carrying the intermediate gearing.
The receipt strip 32 is fed from a supply roll (not shown) through a guide 55 between coperating feed rollers 56 (Fig. 3)Y and 57 (Figs. 3 and i) through a-guide 58 and then through a shearing slot in a stationary knife 59 and under the v-type wheels. Peripheral fianges 60 on the feeding roller 56 rigidly mounted on the shaft 49, are so constructed that they coperate with the feeding roller 5T to feed a receiptat each operation slightly pastV printing position; A plate 61 of 'a pivoted yoke 62 is held in engagement with the receiptstrip by a spring 63 to hold-the receipt strip against the chute 55 and thereby keep the-strip taut during the feeding of the strip by the feeding rollers. The back of the chute is slidably mounted near its upper end on screws 100 and at its lower end on studs 99 which project through slots formed in lugs 101. A spring G3 which is fastened to a lug 102 on the back of the chute retains the back in elevated position. )Vlien the back is lowered by the finger piece 103 on the back a projection 101 on the latter engages a projection 105 on the voke 62 to rock the lat'- ter rearwardly and thereby permit thereceipt. strip to be easily started through the chute, when the strip is attached to the machine.
Before the platen 4() is operated to print upon a receipt, -the receipt, which has been moved slightly past printing position by the feeding rollers, is moved slightly rearward into its exact printing position by the device forming the subject matter of the present invention and now to be described.
.Rigidly-mountd on the shaft 65 (Figs. 3 and 4) supported by the printer frame is a voked frame 6G from the forwardly extending side arms '67 of which is pivotally swung by'pins 6i a frame'V comprising an arm 68 and a lever G9 connected by and integral with a cross bar 70. Spring pressed plungers or finger pieces 71 Vare slidably mounted on the 'ends of the slots I2 in engagement with the pin 73. Downwardly extending fingers 79 (best shown in Fig. 3) are adapted to project through slots T8 (best shown in F ig. 4) formed in the lower forward end of the front plate of the guide 55V and through notches 77 (Fig. 5) formed in the sides of the receipt strip between the receipts 3i at the cutting line.' The fingers T9, howevers are normally held in the elevated position shown in Fig. 3 free of the receipt strip, to
permit the feeding of the receipt strip by the feeding rollers 5G and 57. An upwardly extending arm S0 integral with the left hand side of the voked frame 66 carries at its upper end a roller 81 projecting into a cam groove 82 formed in the face of a disk 83 rigidly mounted on the shaft 52. A pitman Si at its lower end is connected to the upwardly extending arm' of the lever 69 by a screw 8G having an eccentric portion which passes through the pitman S. A nut 110 is employed to fasten the screw in adjusted position, the screw being used to control the extent of rocking movement of the frame GS so that the proper adjustment of the receipt can always be obtained if a change in the size of the receipts is made. The pitman Si at its upper end is forked over the shaft 52 and carries a roller 87 which projects into a. cam groove 88 formed in a disk 89 also fast on shaft- The operation of this device j ustdescribed is as follows: The cam groove SS is so designed that during the rotation of the shaft 110 52 and after the receipt strip has been fed forwardly by the feeding rollers 56 and 57 thejpitman Si is drawn in the direction of its length toward the shaft 52 thereby rocking the frame comprising the lever 69, arm 115 G8 and cross bar 'F0 forwardly about its pivotal center to move the fingers 79 slightly pastl and over the notches 77 between the first. and. second receipt in the receipt strip. Then -near the end ofthe operation of the 120 machine but before the printing impression has been made by the platen @L0 the cam groove 82 rocks the frame 66 counter clockwise to lower the fingers 79 into lengagementwith the sides' of the upper face of the re- 125 ceipt to be printed upon, the springs 'Z6 being slightly compressed at this time by this engagement. The ca-in 88 then operates the pit-man 8i to swing the frame, compris- Aing the levers 69 and 68 and the crossbar 1730 70 counter clockwise. During this movement of the last mentioned frame the fingers 79 slide. into cooperative relation with the notches 77 whereupon the springs 76 move the finger pieces Il downwardly to carry the fingers 79 into engagement with the notches so that during the continued movement of the frame the fingers draw the first receipt slightly rearwardly. ln this position of the receipt the receipt will be severed, on the line 91, from the strip (F ig. 5) by the cooperation of a. movable knife 92 with the stationary knife :59 and the receipt will also be in position to receive a printed impression at the proper line. Immediately afterl the check has been printed upon it is severed from the check strip and then the pitman 8l is moved back to normal position by its cam to raise the fingers 79 out of.

From the above description it; can be seen that if 'the check is fed slightly too far by the feeding rolls the fingers 79, being moved forwardly slightly past the position to which the notches 7 7 of the check strip should uniformly be moved by the feeding rollers will engage in the notches to carry the receipt into proper position to be severed and printed. As the feeding rollers always feed the receiptslpast printing and severing position the receipts will be adjusted to this printing` and severing position by the iingers 79 even if the feeding rollers feed the receipts-forwardly to an intermediate position, that is between severing and printing position and the position to which the rollers are intended to feed the receipts.
The movable knife 92, (Fig. 3) is carried by a frame 93 .supported by the forward ends 'of arms 94 loosely mounted at their rear ends 93. The right hand side arm 94 carries a roller 95 which projects into a cam groove 96 formed in a disk 97 rigidly mounted on the shaftl. The cam groove 96 is so shapedthat the movableknife 92' will be raised immediately after the platen 40 has been operated and While the receipt is retained in its correct severing and printing pdsition by the linger pieces 71'to sever the check from the strip on the line 91 (Fig. 5).
As the printing mechanism and the cash register towhich the presentiinvention is' applied in the illust-rated form disclosed herein is well known in the art and disclosed in the above mentioned application and patent and as the device 'of the present invention is simple 'and has beenfully described above it is thought unnecessary to give a rsum. of the complete operation of the machine, the foregoing description being considered complete vin 'itself for a perfect understanding of the present invention.
l While the form of mechanism here shown anddescribed, is admirably adapted to fulfil the objects primarily stated, it is to be 1mderstood that it is not intended to confine the invention to the one' form of embodiment herein disclosed, for it is susceptible of embodiment in various forms all coming Within the scope of the claims which follow.
What is claimed iszl. ln a machine of the class described the combination with an arm having oscillating and bodily movements for coperating with openings 'in a paper strip to adjust the 'strip in proper position, of means for bodily moving vthe arm into coperative relation with the openings, and means for oscillating the arm'to adjust the strip in proper position.
` 2. ln a machine of the class described the combination With a device capable of having two kinds. of movement-s for coperating with openings in a paper strip to adjust the strip in proper position, of a cam for giving said device movement of one lrind to move it into coperative relation with said openings, and a cam for giving said device the other-kind of movement to adjust the strip in proper position. In a machine of the class described the combination with an oscillatory and bodily movable device having spring pressed fingers for coperating With openings in a receip'tI strip, of operating meansv for bodily moving said device to move said fingers into operative relation With said openings, and for oscillating said device to adjust the first receipt in proper position.
4. n a machine of the class described the combination With arpivoted member having .spring pressed lingers for coperating with openings in a receipt strip, of a pivoted supporting frame on which said member is pivoted, and operating means for rocking said supporting frame to carry said fingers into coperative relation with said openings, and rockingsaid member so that the fingers adjnstA the receipts in the receipt strip in proper position.`
5. ln a machineof the class described the combination with a pivot-ed member having spring pressed fingers for coperating with openings in a receipt strip, of a pivoted supporting frame on Which said member is pivoted, a cam for rocking said supporting frameto carry said fingers into cooperative relation with the openings, and a cam for rocking said member so that the fingers adjust the receipts in proper position.
6, ln a machine of the class described, the combination of means for feed-ing a perforated or recessed receipt strip an approximately invariable distance in one direction past -a denite position, 'and means for-cooperating with openings in said' strip to move the strip in the reverse direction only and thereby adjust the receipts in saiddefinite position.
7. In a machine of the class'described the I combination. with 'a pivoted member having Y mediate said member and said frame.

In a machine of the' class described, the combination with adjusting lingers to engage openings in a paper strip but normally out of contact with the strip, of a device having a.' compound movement and carrying- 'said lingers, and means for imparting compound movement to said .device first to move said fingers into Vcontact with the strip and then to engage the ingerswith 'the openings and adjust the strip.
9.- In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for feeding a receipt strip in one direction, and mexfmsY for coperating with openings in said strip to move it in the reverse direction for adjusting the same. j
10. In a machine of the class described, means for pulling strip material having openings or recesses therein, and means cooperating With the openings 'in said Strips to push it in the reverse direction for adj usting the same.
11. In a machine of the class described,
feed rollers for feeding in a given direction strip material having openings or recesses therein, and oscillating means coperating with the openings in said strip for adjusting the same in the reverse direction.
12. In a machine of the class described, feed rollers for feeding in a, given direction strip material having openings or recesses therein, and oscillating armscoperating with the openings or recesses in said strip for adjusting the same in the reverse d1- rection.
13. In a n'lachine of the class described,
feed rollers for feeding in one-direction strip material having openings or recesses therein, and oscillating arms having spring pressed fingers coperating with the openings or recesses in said strip for adjusting the same in the reverse direction.

In a'inacliine of the class described, feed rollers for feeding in one direction strip material having openings or recesses therein, oscillating arms, means for moving said arms into coperation with the openings in said strip, and means for oscillating said arms to adjust the strip in the reverse direction to that in which it is fed by the feed rollers.

In a machine of the class described, feed rollers for `feeding ina given direction strip material having openings or recesses therein, means for adjusting the strip in the reverse direction, a cam for moving said means into coperation With the openings in the strip, and 'a cam for actuating said means for adjusting the said strip.

and a cam for oscillating said arms to adjust the strip in the reverse direction to that in whichit was fed by the feed rollers.
