Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented July 8, 1919.
Application filed December 18, 1918. Serial No. 267,314.
To all wiz/0m it may-concern.'
Be it known that I, DONALD H. IVALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in brushes and has particular application to a shaving brush.
In carrying out the present invention it is my purpose to provide a shaving brush which will be constructed in such a manner that the shaving soap may be carried in the handle of the brush, and wherein the brush will be formed so that the stick of soap may be moved into the same to facilitate lathering of the face in the use of the brush, and wherein the stick of soap may be restored to the handle succeedinv the lathering operation and the brush and handle completely incased thereby protecting the bristles of the brush against dust, microbes, etc.
It is also my purpose to provide a brush of the class described which will embrace the efficiency and durability and which may be manufactured and marketed at small cost and which will embody comparatively few parts and being so arranged and correlated as to reduce the possibility of derangement to a minimum.
With the above recited objects in view and others of a similar nature, the invention resides in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawinfm- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a brush constructed in accordance with my present invention7 the same being shown inclosed in its protective casing.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the protective casing removed.
Fig. 3 is a vertical the brush.
Referring now to the drawing in detail 1 designates a handle which, in the present instance, is cylindrical in cross section and has one end threaded eXteriorly and the other end threaded interiorly. The handle 1 is hollow and formed in the side wall thereof is an elongated slot 2. The externally threaded end of the handle 1 is closed by means of a cap, which, in this instance, embodies a plate or disk 3 formed with a laterally projecting circular flange 4 that is sectional view through threaded interiorly to engage the exterior threads on the corresponding end of thc handle 1, and also threaded exteriorly.
The brush head is indicated by the reference character 5 and, in accordance with my present invention, this brush head is in the form of a ring or annulus provided with a flange 6 that is threaded into the interiorly threaded end of the handle l, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 0f the drawing. Connected with the outer face of the annulus or ring 5 are the brush bristles 7. These bristles 7, owing to the shape of the brush head 5 are so arranged as to present an open space at the center of the mass of bristles, as shown in Fig. 3.
Slidably mounted Within the handle 1 is a cup 8 havingl its closed end confronting the cap 3 and interposed between the cap 3 and the closed end of the cup S is a retractile spring 9, one end of which is secured to the cup while the other end is fastened to the cap 3. Threaded or otherwise connected with the side of the cup 8 and extending through the elongated slot 2 in the handle 1 is a pin 10 havino its outer end formed with a head 11 whereby the in may be rotated to move the head into an out of engagement with the adjacent portion of the handle 1 to hold the cup against movement under the action of the spring 9.
12 designates a stick of shavine soap and one end of this stick is secured 1n the cup in some suitable manner, as for instance, by friction.
In use of my improved shaving brush, the pin 10 is rotated to disengage the head 8 from the adjacent part of the handle 1 and is pushed downwardly in the slot 2 so that the cup 8 will move toward the brush head of the handle against the action of the retractile spring 9. In this movement of the cup the stick of soap 12 is projected into the space provided by the bristles 7 so that the soap may be applied to the face and a lather formed by the manipulation of the brush. After the lather has been formed the pin 10 is released and the spring 9 draws the cup and the stick of soap into the handle 1 and out of the space defined by the bristles 7 In order to protect the bristles against dust, microbes, etc., and at the same time close the open end of the brush, I employ an elongated cylindrical protective shell or casing 13, one end of which is closed while the other end is internally threaded to engage the external thread on the flange 4,'the ing soap, eyes carried by the end of the cup closed end of the shell or casing 13 covering and the closed end of the handle, a coiled the outer ends of the bristles 7 as clearly contractile spring arranged within the hanshown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Thus, the d le and terminally connected with said eyes, bristles and the brush handle are completely and a headed element threaded into said cup incased and protected. V' and passed through said slot, said head en- I claim gaging against the handle to hold said cup A shaving brush comprising la hollow hanin adjusted position `,against the tension of dle, open at one end, and provided with a said spring.
