rI his invention relates to collapsible boxes, cases and the like more especially intended for, but not limited to, use as packing cases andthe said invention has for its object'to provide an improvedcollapsible box, or case A(hereinafter referred to as case) capable of being used for many purposes such ,as for packing` loosegoods or goods in bulk form and for use in packing pulverulent, granular and other material. i y

According to this invention the ends of the box are connected to the side portions thereofl in such manner as to allow the bottom of the box which may be hinged to either side to be collapsed or folded upwardly so as to occupy a position between one end and one side of the box when the latter is collapsed. Two diagonally opposite corners of the box yare hingedly conl nected together, the other two diagonally 3()A opposite corners being connected together by pivotal means. `In collapsing or folding ,the box one end portion thereof collapses 'i vor folds inwardly into-a position against the bottom and the other end portion collapses or folds outwardly into a position in alinement with the bottom of the box case and ythe like. Each end portion may alsovbe connected to its side portion by inside hinges and by a pin and slot connection formed by a bracket or link and a strap passing around the outside surface of the end of the respective side portion and bent over at each end vto engage the pinV of they pin and slot connection. Secured by hinges to either of the side portions, is a bottom portion which when the case is set up rests against a stop or stops in one side of the caseand practically fits the interior of the case. i Y The parts or halves forming Ithe lid of A the case may be pivoted or hinged to the projecting from the upper ends thereof, the adjacent part of the lid being provided with suitable plates, sockets or eyes which may bc ronnected by pivot pins to the aforesaid p a es.

The two parts of the lid may be prevented from falling into the case when the same 1s 1n use by a stop or stops arranged inside the case; or if desired the two parts may be formed with a stop or stops. A suitable recess is provided in the upper faces of the two parts of the lid, these recesses each carrying a hook or hooks, eyes or staples for the attachment of a padlock or other suitable locking device, by which the two parts of the lid can be locked in position.

The sides, lid end portions and bottom of the case may be provided with additional battens or bars for strengthening purposes or for the attachment of the hinges, or pivotal connecting members. In some cases it` may be desired to have partly open sides, end portions, lid and bottom.

I will describe with reference to the accompanying drawings constructions in accordance with the present invention but I do not limit myself to the precise construction described and illustrated.

Figure l is a plan of a packing case in accordance with the present invention, the packing case being shown collapsed.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation looking in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the com-` plete case and Fig. 4 is a cross section on' the line A, B, C.

The same reference numerals wherever repeated indicate the same parts throughout the drawings.

Referring to Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings l and 2 are the side portions, two diagonally disposed ends 3, 4 of the side portions each carrying an end portion 5, 6 hingedly connected with the respective side portions l, 2- and each end portion 5, 6 having hinged to it each part 7, 8 or half of the lid portion. Each end portion 5, 6 may be connected to its side portion l, 2 by inside hinges 9 and by a pin 10 and slot 11 formed by a bracket 12 or link and a strap 13 passing around the outside surface of the end of the respective side portion each strap being bent over at one end as at 14, 15 to engage the pin 10 of the pin and slot connection. The two symmetrical portions thus formed are connected by suitable hinges brackets 19. Secured by hinges 15 to eitherv Y of the side portions, is a bottom portion 16 which when the case is set up rests against a stop 17 or stops and practically fits the interior of the case.V

The parts 7 8 or halves formingthelid of the case may be pivoted or hinged to the end portions 5, 6 or if so desired `the said parts maybe hinged to or pivotally connected at 20, 21 to and between bars 22-23 secured to the end portions. The pivots 20, 21 maybe carried by two plates 24, 25 secured to and between the bars 22, 23 Vand projecting as at 26, 27 from the upper ends thereof, the adjacent part of the lid being provided with suitable plates 28, 29, sockets or eyesfwhich may beconnected by the pivot pins 20,21 to theplates 24, 25. l

The two parts 7, S 'of thelid may be prevented from falling into the case when the same is in use by a stop or stops arranged inside the case; or if desired the two parts may be formed each with va projecting or overlapping portion 81, 32, which insures the simultaneous opening of the two parts forming the lid.YY A suitable recess 33 is provided in the upper faces of the two parts of the lid, these recesses each carrying a. hook 3ft, 35 or hooks, eyes or staples for the attachment of a padlock or other suitable lockingdevice, by which the two parts of the lid can be locked in position.

The sides, lid, end portions and bottom of the case may be provided with additional battens or bars such as 36 for strengthening purposes or for the attachment of the hinges or pivotal connecting members. ln some cases it may be desired to have partly open sides, end portions, lidand bottom.

It will thus be seen that on removing the locking device the case can be `readily and quickly collapsed, one side -and one end portionV forming one side of the collapsed-case and the other side and the remaining end portion forming the other side of the collapsed case the two parts of the lid portions Vbeing folded or turned outwardly over the against the side to which the said bottom is hinged. A collapsible box or the like, comprising side members, end members hinged to the side members at the ends of the side members, said end members having outer vertical bars secured thereto, top sections having outer longitudinal strips, hinges connecting` the outer ends of the strips of the top sections and the outer bars of thev end members, said hinges having their pivots disposed outwardly of the end members whereby said end members serve to prevent the downward movement of the top sections beyond a substantially horizontal position, the strips of the top sections being provided at their free ends with recesses, said strips projecting beyond their top sections at the opposite edges of the strips so that such projections overlap the top sections and cause them to move upwardly together.

3. A collapsible box or the like, comprising side members, L-shaped brackets secured to the ends of the side members and having their transverse portions projecting inwardly, end members hinged to ythe transverseV portions of the L-shaped brackets, links pivotally connected Vto the opposite ends of end members, strips secured to the ends of the side'members and having their free ends bent laterally, pins carried by the bentends ofthe strips'and operating within curved slots in the links, a bottom member arranged between the side members, and a top for the box.
