8 WILLIAM J. S. HERBERT, F ORRVILLE, OHIO.
BEDSTEAD.
- rsosgem.
To dll 'uihom it may concern: A, Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. S. HER- BERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orrville, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Bedsteads; and
,. I do hereby declare the following to be a fu'll, clear, and exact description of the inmore particularly to that type of bedsteads comprising essentially three rigid parts.
Difliculty has been encountered in the practical manufacture of three-piece bedsteadsfor the reason that where the bed spring is provided with means to lock with the foot and head sections when the distance between the fastening members on the section varies for various practical reasons it is diflicult then to properly assemble or erect the bedstead because the interlocking members of the spring-frame and the head and foot sections do not register.
It is one of the important objects of the present invention to provide for the practicable construction and erection of beds of the three-piece type so that the difficulty of assembling or erecting the bedstead is entirely eliminated and it is another object of the present invention to provide parts of economical desi and construction and which will permlt the ready erection of the bedstead and obviate the rigid or positive fastening of the three members in order to hold the several parts firmly assembled.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a locking means for securing the spring-frame t0 the foot or head sections and to provide also means whereby the side members of the spring-frame may be readily adjusted to compensate for variation of the distances between the socket members of the head and foot sections and it is a further object to provide an interlocking and fastening device which is of such construction that it can be used at each corner of the bedstead or in other words to provide an interchangeable fastening device for the springframe and foot or head section.
With these and other objects in View as will be rendered manifest to those skilled in the art the invention consists of the construction, the combination, and in details and arrangements of the parts which are Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 23,1918. Serial No. 259,407.
more particularly described hereinafter relative to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein,
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the erected bedstead.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fastening and joint forming means at one corner of the bedstead and Fig. 3 is avertical central section through they fastening device.
Three-piece bedsteads are of advantage for the reason that they are economical in the amount of material necessary to form a complete bedstead in that the spring-frame may be utilized also as the means for con necting the foot and head sections of the bed and this invention relates essentially to the means for securing the spring-frame to the foot and head sections in a practical, substantial and economical manner.
The bedstead may comprise a head-section 2 and a foot section 3 each of which is provided with a socket casting or member 4 having a lateral extension 5 with seat-forming means 6 designed to receive the bar or projection 7 forming a part of or on a corner casting or member 8 which has a socket 9 to receive a side rail or member 10 in this instance forming a portion of the bed springframe. Obviously the interlocking mem bers 4 and 8 may assume various forms and thepresent invention is not limited to any specific construction of this part of the device.
However, in the erection of three-piece bed-frames when the spring-frame is utilized as the connecting unit between the foot and head sections it is desirable to. provide for the proper registration of the fastening member 7 with the socket member 4 and this I accomplish by providing for the relative transverse adjustment of the side rails 10 with respect to the foot or head sections or in other words provide for the connection of the corner members 8 to the transverse bars 12 of the spring-frame in such manner that the corner members 8 can be adjusted along the transverse bars 12 as may be made necessary to secure the registration of the socket members 4: with the fastening lugs 7.
In securing this adjustment one means comprises a seat-forming portion 13 on the corner bracket 8 into which there is adapted to be adjusted the adjacent end of the transverse spring-frame member 12. In the as sembling of the bedframe parts 10 and 12 the casting or corner member 8 is slid onto the member 12 to the requisite position and may be held there frictionally or otherwise secured if desired. In the present instance .the lower flange of the transverse bar 12,
which is shown as of angle iron construction, is provided with a short lip or ledge 12 engaging a hook-portion8 so that the parts are substantially interlocked. When the spring-fabric 15 is placed under tension and connected at its ends to the transverse mem-' bers 12 these latter are frictionally held against sliding movement on the corner brackets 8 by the tension of the springs.
It is understood of course, that I am not limited to the specific construction of the interlocking means between the corner bracket 8 and the transverse member 12 as these may be varied in construction, design and proportion to suit the various requirements and demands of the trade.
What I claim is:
1. A three-piece bedstead comprising a foot section, having socket members, a head section having socket members, side rails having corner members for interlocking with the sockets, and transverse bars providing co ies of this patentmsy be obtainedifor five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner Washington, D. 0. i V V for variable adjustment of the corner member at the ends of the frame to compensate for variation as'to the distance between the sockets of the respective sections, the transverse bars having out-turned lips at the ends each corner member in which its lip is slidable having a hook portion adapted to receive the lip onrthe adjacent end of the transverse bar.
2. A three-piece bedstead. comprising a foot section, ahead section and a pair of side rails interlocking socket and corner members on respective parts, and angle-iron transverse bars with inturned top flanges slida'bly interlocking with the corner mem-, bers so as to readily permit the proper register of the latter with the sockets and to compensate for variation of the transverse distance between centers of the sockets at each end of the bedstead, the parts being held assembled by the tension of the spring connected to the inturned top flanges of the transverse bars, the bottom edges of said transverse bars being provided with outturned lips for respective seats in the corner members.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
WILLIAM J. S. HERBERT.
