Be it known that I, FRANK R. Peers, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Merrill, in the county of Glinton and Stateof New York, have invented a certain new and useful Automatic Brake, of whichthe following is a specification, the same being a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will `enable others skilled in the art to which it appertain-s to makel and use the same.
This invention relates to mechanical devices for arresting or retarding the motion of a vehicleby means of friction,`and particularly to that class of the same comprising shoes or other brake structures pressed against the rim of the wheels and which operate mechanically-0r automatically-under certain conditions of use, and also actuated manually.`
The invention comprises a novel arrange`- ment of elements whereby under some cir* cumstances-as where the wagon is traveling on descending ground-the brake is caused to apply itself and therefore to be self-acting. The brake may preferably be also readily rendered inoperative under other conditions, as when the team is backed, so as not to impede the required rearward movement of the vehicle, while at any time desired-as when on a level roaddthe brake may preferably be applied manually. The object of the invention is primarily to provide a simple, strong, durable and efficient mechanism that shall be operated by the hold-back of the horses on the tongue and shall consist of certain novel features of construction,
combination and operation of elements as hereinafter set forth.
In order that the invention shall be fully understood reference may be had tothe ac companying drawings, illustrative of one embodiment of the invention, which accom pany and form a part of this specification, and in which- :Figure 1 represents an elevation, partly in section, of a device constructed according to my invention; and
Fig. 2` is a plan view of the same.

A rod or tube 10 is located adjacent to, and preferably in Valinement with, the pole, which` rod is preferably connected to, and serves tooperate, the brakes 13, the said rod being guided in its movement by suitable devices, as by means of bolts 9 which work in the slots 1 At the forward end of the rod 10 is secured the neck-yoke 8, and toward the'rear extremity of the same is attached the whiffietree 7. The 'forward strainof the horses,
and the consequent forward movement of the rod l0 traveling on the'pole 3, takes off the `brakes 13 from the wheels. OnVdescenlding ground, however, the backing of the horses throws back the rod 10, together with the 4whiilletree 7, and puts on the brakes.
The means"- by which thesaid "operation andgconnection of the parts are accomplished may be varied, but a simple and convenient construction by which the said end may be attained comprises thel following elements. Plates 5 having central elongated projections are placed above and below the slots 4i, which plates may be held together by the bolts 9, by which construction of elements the parts are rendered adjustable and the distance between the plates 5 may be varied at will. Upon the bolts may be swiveled the whifietree 7 and the neck-yoke 8.
In order to attach the rod 10 to the last named elements in a convenient manner the same arepreferably mounted on the bolts 9 and means for connecting the said swiveled parts with the rod may comprise any desired arrangement, as for example, a preferably U-shaped plate 6 having orifices in which the sections of the rod 10 may be screwed, which rod is preferably provided with means for lengthening or shortening the same at willby the use of a turn-buckle 11.
By the employment of the before described adjustable parts, my device may be adapted to be used with poles of varying length, width and thickness, and the accommodation of my invention to poles of different sizes may be attained by merely cutting the slots 4 at suitable distances apart and screwing the pairs of plates toward or away from each other as occasion may require. The lower plates 5 may be integral with the bolts 9, or they may be dispensed with altogether,
