fulv Improvements in Brick-Carriers, ofvwhich the following is aspecilication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates to a loading. and un loading device, and more particularly to the class of carriers for handling bricks.v
The primary object of the inventionv is the provision' ofa device of this character wherein anumber of bricks can be transferred from a stack or kiln to a car or vice versa, thereby eliminating the manual handling of said bricks for this purpose.
Another object of the invention is theprovision of a device of this -character wherein bricks arranged in aV plurality of rows in a stack can be `firmly grabbed in a'singlev operation for the transfer thereof by the device to transport the bricks from one point to another and all of the bricks held by .thede vicemay be simultaneously released at the Point'desired A further object vofthe invention is the provision Vof a device of this character wherein the construction thereofis novel in form so as to enable a number of ebricks or ether likearticles to 'be transferred therebv 1n a s` gle operation with minimum labor andV time. l

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of-'parts which will be exemplified after described, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the ap- Pended claims".

Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the device comprises a frame A including a plurality of spaced parallel bars 10 which cX- tend longitudinally of the frame and end hars 11` to which are riveted or otherwise secured the longitudinal bars 10, the longitudinalbars being-slightly upwardly bowed for giving an arched formation to the frame. Secured to the under faces of the end bars 11 transversely thereof are spaced parallel guidecleats 12 for the slidable mounting of gripplng members hereinafter fully described. The gripping members each comprises a substantially' L- shaped jaw 13 which 1s of a length equal to the length of a brick and secured to the upper face of the flange 14 ofsaid jaw 13 are slides 15 which engage the-cleats 12 adjacent thereto` for the slidable mounting ofthe jaw on the frame, the cleats 12 and slides 15 being formed with beveled contacting edges 16 so that when the slides 15 are engaged with the cleats 12 there is no possibility of the separation of the jaw 13 from the frame. It is, of course, understood that the jaws 13 are sides of the frame A and ooperate 1n pairs with each other for the gripping of a row of y bricks to be'transferred from one point to another by the device in a described.
Rising from the end and intermediate lonmanner presently Agitudinal bars 10 of the-frame A are supports y17 on which are detachably mounted bearing blocks 18 in which are journaled a pair of spaced parallel actuating shafts 19, being notched at 20"to accommodate the shafts 19 at this point. Upon these shafts 19v are fxedly mounted crank arms 21 to which are pivoted at 22links 23,the same being also pivoted at 24 to plunger rods 25, which are slidably mounted .in uptur-ned ears or lugs `26 formed on stationary arms 27 which are fixed to the jaws 13 mediall thereof. Surrounding the rods 25.` are coi ed compression springs 28 outer ends working against whichhave their adjusting nuts. 29 threaded on the outer ends arranged at opposite V of the rods,` 25, and on the turning of the nuts 29 the 'compression of said springs 28 can be varied. On rotation of the shafts 19 in one direction the .plunger rods 25 are moved outwardly and in this manner the jaws 13 are free to spread apart forvtheir release from clamping. engagement with bricks or like articles which may have been clamped between them. On actuating the shafts 19 in the reverse direction there is exerted a compression upon the springs 28 as the rods 25 are inovedinwardly, and these springs when compressed, will act upon the arms 27 on the jaws, thereby moving said jaws 13 at opposite sides of the frame toward'each 'other for the clamping between them of bricks or the like. v
Mounted on one of the shafts 19 is a throw lever 30 which carries a latch blade 31 adapted lfor engagement with a toothed segment 32 fixed to and rising from the frame at one end thereof, and in this manner thelever 30 can be held fast in its thrown -position and freed when moved in one direction for the clamping engagement ofthe 4'jaws 13 with rows of bricks' to be transferred by the carrierfrom one point to another. v f- 'Mounted on "the shafts 19 are meshing cog gears 33 so that on actuating one of the shaftsin one direction the-other shaft will be operated or actuated in the opposite direction, and in this' manner the laws are moved in unison to clamping or unclamping positions.
Fixed to the frame A and rising therefrom are suspension legs 34 which' are fixed i to a crown or head plate 35 which constitutes a turntable for the carrier, the plate has fixed thereto angle irons 37 adapted'for connection with a' trolley, crane or other movable support so that the carrier can be conveyed from onepoint to another in the transferring of bricks or the like from a kiln to a car or vice versa. The head 35 is rotatably supported upon the disk, the head being formed with a 'central opening 38 through. which are passed the fasteners439 connecting the angle irons 37 with the disk 3G, the angle irons 37 being spaced'the thickness of the head 35 from said disk through the medium of spacer washers 40 which surround the fasteners and are interposed between the disk 36 and said angle irons.
The carrier is vsuspended from the trolley in any approved manner and can be readily turned or rotated for the convenient handling of its load 4with despatch.
In the operation of the carrier the same is brought into a position above the stack of bricks, which latter are arranged in rows, it being understood, of course, that the jaws 1.3 of-the carrier have been separated therequired distance apart and' on the lowering of the carrier into gripping position the between, and this is accomplished by actuating thelever 30 in one ldirection' so that the jaws will move toward each other and thereby gripping-'the bricks therebetween. When the-bricks have been clamped in the carrier the same are transferred thereby from the stack to a car.
It will be obvious that the carrier is adaptable for the transfer of other articles of block formation or saidcarrier can be used for the gripping of beams or other like lmaterial for the transfer of the same from one point to another.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, theconstruction and operation of the herein described brick carrier will be readily appa-rent and, therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a frame of substantially. arched conformation, guides on the under face of said frame and on opposite sides of the peak of the arch of the latter, a plurality of gripping jaws provided each with slides engaging the said guides, a hand lever pivotally mounted on the frame, means for engagement by the hand lever to lock it in various angular positions, and positive connections between the hand lever and the gripping jaws whereby opposed jaws may be moved toward or away from each other so as to effect a gripping operation on a row of bricks or the release s of such 'row after having once been gripped. being superimposed upon a disk 36 which 2.
