Be it known that I, PETER P. COOPER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric Locomotives, of which the following is a specification. A y
`This invention relates to electric loco1notives and particularly to locomotives o1 jointed six-wheel or eight-wheel mine `and industrial types. 1 i
The principal object of the invention is to form a jointed locomotive having six or more wheels, by combining one or more inexpensive auxiliary motor sections with the usual four-wheeltype of `mine andindustrial locomotive. 'When a our-wheellocomotive becomes inadequate `to meet the increased demands in the work for which it is employed, in order to obtain a more powerful locomotive7 it has heretofore been necessary to use a standard six-wheel rigidframe locomotive. Howevenby means of my invention, it becomes possible to readily convert the four-wheel locomotive in use into a jointed six-wheel or eight-wheel locomotive of greater capacity. at a small expense by combining therewith one or more auxiliary motor sections. 1 i 1 A further object ofl my invention lis to provide a jointed locomotive consisting oiftwo or more unitary motor; sectionsflexibly connected together by coupling members that will maintain the ends of the two body parts of the locomotive in abutting relation but will permit these parts tok move laterally with relation to each other. 1
The above and other objects and the novel features of the s invention will be `apparent from the following description, `taken in connection with the drawings which constitute a part of this application and in which Figure 1 is a plan viewof a jointed sixwheel locomotive embodying `my invention, parts thereof being broken `out. tol show the construction of the flexible coupling. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the locomotive shown in Fig.` 1, with parts broken out to disclose v the construction i of the coupling i member.
Figs. 3 and f1 are, respectively, a plan` view and a central sectional view of a portionoi'` a locomotive similar to theone illustrated in Figs.A 1 and 2 but disclosing a dilierent form of exible coupling. Figs. 5 and 6 are,
respectively, aplan view and a central sectional view of flexible coupling means embodying my invention. Figs. 7 and 8,-re spectively, area plan view and a side elevation illustrating another form of `flexible `coupling embodying my invention; and
Figs.` 9 and 10are, respectively, a plan view and -a side elevation illustrating another form of flexible coupling embodying my invention.
Referring to Figsl and 2, 10 represents a body of the usual four-wheel mine and industrial type of electric locomotive. The body is low and supported, by springs 11 and12, on the axles 13 and 14, respectively. The `axle 13 `has a pair of drive wheels 15 `fixed thereon, and the axle'14 has a pair'of trailer wheels `16 fixed thereon. `The propellingmeans of the four-wheel section consists of an electric motor 17 which is geared to the drive wheels 15 and is controlled by a suitable controllerlS mounted on the front end of the body 10 in the usual manner.
The two #wheel auxiliary motor section consists of abody part 19 which is supported by springs`20 on a single `axle 21 that has wheels 22 fixed thereon. The auxiliary body section 19 is substantially the same size in transverse section as the-main body part but is considerably shorter than the latter.` An electric motor 23 is mounted on the auxiliary body part 19` and is geared to the wheels 22 to drive the same.` The motor 23 may also be` `controlled from the controller 18 by a suitable connection. c
The main and auxiliary body parts of the locomotiveare connected `together by a suitable flexible coupling `device that will maintain the two body'parts in abutting relation but which will permit` these parts'to move laterally and vertically with `relation to each other.` `In the form oi coupling device employed `inthe locomotive shown in` Figs. 1
and 2, the oppcsedends of the body sections 10` and 19 are provided with sockets 24L and 251 to receive the ends of the coupling device 26. The end of the coupling device which lits in the socket 211 has a horizontal hole therethrough to receive a cou ling member 271 that connects the prope ling member to the body section 10, and the end of the coupling member which is disposed in the socket 25 has -aholeextending vertically therethrough to receive the coupling pin `28` that pivotallyconnects the coupling curves of fshorter radius. Each side frame member of the body 10 has a groove 36 therein to receive the tongue 37 on the side frame of the auxiliary body 19. A pin 3S passes through an opening in the side frame vof the body 10. and through the tongue 37 to vflexibly connect the bodies together.

' While 1I have shown and described the preferred-form of my invention, and several Ymodi'lications thereof, I do not-wish to be limited to the vexact constructions illustrated,
as itis obvious that numerous changes may lbe made therein'ivvithout departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim asmy invention 1. In an electric locomotive, the combinaltioii with a main section having a plurality ofaxles and Wheels thereon and equipped with electric motive means, of a two-ivheel auxiliary 'section equipped with motive means, and vcouplingiiieans ior flexibly connecting saidfsections.
2. In a mine or industrial type locomotive,

5. In an electric locomotive, the combination with a four-wheel main body part equipped with electromotive means, of a two-wheel auxiliary body part equipped with electromotive means, the adjoining ends of said body parts being in abutting relation and so shaped as to permit free lateral motion'of one body part with relation to the other while maintaining the abutting relation, and flexible coupling means :tor connecting said body parts together.
6. In an electric locomotive, the combination with a our-wheel main body part equipped with electromotive means, of' a two-wheel auxiliary body part equipped with'electromotive means, and means for connecting said body parts together comprising a coupling member secured to one of the body parts and a pin flexibly connecting said member to the other body part.
7. In an electric locomotive, the combination with a main body part equipped with a plurality of axles, wheels thereon, and electromotive means, of a two-wheel auxiliary body part equipped with electromotive means, and means for connecting said body parts together comprising a coupling member secured to the auxiliary body part and a pin in the longitudinal center-line of the main body part iiexibly connecting said member to the main body part.`
8. In an electric locomotive, the combination with a main body part equipped with a founwheel running gear and electromotive means for propelling the same, of an auxiliary body part equipped with a two-wheel ruiming gear and electromotive means for propelling the same, the adjoining ends `of said body parts being in abutting relation and so shaped as to permit free lateral and vertical movement of said body parts relatively to each other while maintaining the abutting relation, and means for connecting said body parts together comprising sockets in the abutting ends of said members and a coupling member having portions disposed in said sockets and connected to one of said body parts by a `vertical pin and to the other body` part by a horizontal pin.
9. In a jointed mine and industrial type electric locomotive, in combination, a main low body part, running gear therefor including a plurality of axles and wheels thereon, springs supporting said body part on its running gear, electromotive means mounted on said running gear for propolling the main body, an auxiliary body part of substantially the same size in transverse section as the main body part but shorter than the latter, a singe axle on said auxiliary part, wheels on said axle, electromotive means on said auxiliary part for propelling the same, the adjoining ends of said body part being in abutting relation and so shaped as to permit free motion of said body parts relatively to each other while maintaining their abutting relation, and means for connecting said body parts together comprising a coupling member secured to one of the body parts `and a pin flexibly connecting said coupling member to the other body part.
10. The combination with an electric locomotive, of an auxiliary motor section comprising a body portion, a pair of Wheels for supporting said body portion, propelling means mounted on said body portion, and means for coupling said body portion to the electric locomotive.
11. In an auxiliary motor section adapted to be coupled to a locomotive, the combination with a body, of a single axle and pair of driver wheels for supporting the same,

12. In an auxiliary motor section adapted to be coupled to a locomotive, the co1nbination with a body having one end thereof equipped with coupling means and shaped to adapt it to maintain abutting relation with a similarly shaped main motor section to which `it may be coupled, of a single axle and a pair of driver wheels for supporting the said body, and an electric driving motor connected to said driving wheels and disposed on the side of said axle away from said coupling end.
