citizen of the United States, residing in New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in typewriting machines, and more partlcularly to a sheet-collating device for assembling a number'of sheets of different size or sheets of different character in different relaositionsgwith respect to one another, and 1s illustrated in connection with features disclosed" in my applications Nos. 155,380, filed March 17, 1917, and 184,820, filed August 7, 1917.
In the prior application No. 184,820, means was shown for reciprocating a pair of bands wrapped around the platen, for the purpose of collating work-sheets. This case differs from that application in providing a work-sheet holder which, in the form disclosed, comprises a fold which is'secured to the bands, so as to travel around the laten. This fold is provided with flexible si e and bottom flaps, capable of being bent over on the body of the fold, so as to maintain the work-sheets on the fold and thus on the.

The fold is further provided with impaling studs, which are preferably sharp enou h to permit the impaling of the work-s eets without having been previously perforated. The flexible side margins or aps are provided with perforations registering with the impaling studs.
The platen is rovided with a sectlonal guide, so as to de ect the fold and the sheets carried thereby around the platen. This forms a convenient-means of assembling the work-sheets at the front of the platen and inserting them on the platen by reverslng the platen.
The im rovement is shown as applied also to a mo ified'form of collating device in which the fold is located at the entrance or rear side of the platen for assembling the work-sheets. This is an improvement on my application'No. 180,530, filed July 14, 1917.
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.

Figure 1 is a erspective view, showing the collating device as in a position ready to receive a plurality of work-sheets to be assembled for positioning on the platen.

Referring more particularly to the separate parts of the device as embodied in the forms shown in the drawings, theplaten 1 .is secured to an axle 2 mounted to rotate on a carriage 3. The platen 1 isrotated in the usual way by line-space mechanism indicated in general at 4 and by hand-knobs (not shown). To travel back and forth with the rotation of the platen 1, there is provided a collating device, indicated in general at 5, on which work-sheets of various character may be assembled so as to bring predetermined lines in register with each other, whereby difierent parts on several worksheets can be written on simultaneously.
The collating device 5 includes a pair of spaced bands 6 and 7, which are detachably secured to bars 8 and 9 counterbalanced by spring-actuated toggles 10 and 11. The bars 8 and 9 are guided for their movement by plates 12 and 13, so that the bands 6 and 7 will be held taut around the platen 1 by the spring-actuated toggles 10 and 11. This is similar to the structure shown in my application No. 184,820. 1
The bands 6 and 7 are connected to move positively with the platen 1 by means of a sprocket arrangement which includes perforations 14 provided on the bands 6 and 7 and engagin sprocket teeth 15 provided on the ends of te platen 1. The bands 6 and 7 platen.
the platen 1. The fold 16 includes a back 17, side flaps 18 and 19 and a bottom flap 20. The flaps 18, 19 and 20 are capable of being folded over onto the back 17, so as to prevent longitudinal and transverse movements of the work-sheets assembled in the fold.
For the purpose of securing the worksheets in juxtaposition relative to each other and relative to the fold, the fold 16 is provided with a series of impaling studs 21 located at various intervals, and preferably provided with sharp points so that the work-sheets can be impaled thereon without being previously provided with perforations. The side flaps 18 and 19 are provided with perforations 22 registering with the impaling studs 21, so as to allow the studs to pass through the side flaps.
The bottom flap 20 maybe provided with a notch 23. This flap 20 has a' considerable stretch 24, whereby it may be properlygripped and guided in passing around the The upper part of t e flap 20 is bent at a crease line to form a leaf 25 extending over the side flaps 18 and 19, so as to catch them and insure their being folded flat on the back 17 when the fold as a whole passes around the platen 1. This is possible, as the lower flap 20 overlaps the side flaps 18 and 19 to a sufiicient extent, so as to automatically deflect the lower ends of the side fiialpls 18 and 19 toward the back 17 of the The fold 16 and the work-sheets carried thereby aregripped to the platen 1 by the usual pressure feedrolls 26 and 27. These pressure feed rolls are the standard feeding and guiding device used on the Underwood typewriter, and are fully described in my above-mentioned application No. 184,820. They are mounted on rods 28 carried by arms 29 pivoted to a shaft 30. The arms 29 have secured thereto arms 31 which engage fiat bottomed notches 32 provided in a rock shaft 33. The rock shaft 33' spreads the arms 31 so as to remove 'th'e rolls 26 and 27 -from engagement with the platen 1 against the tension of springs, not shown.
The shaft 33 may 'berocked from a pressure feed roll release 34, which is connected thereto, by means of a'link .35 and an arm 36 on the rock shaft 33. The rock shaft 33 may also be operated to release the pressure feed rolls 26 and 27 from a hand-lever 37, which is connected to the rock shaft 33 by means of a link 38, a shifter 39, a link 40 and an arm 41 carried by the rock shaft 33. Incidentally, the shifter 39 disengages a detent 42 which engages the line-space wheel. The release of this detent permits the rapid rotation of the platen by the hand-knobs for positioning the collating device.
The collating device is arranged to automatically bring the pressure feed rolls and the detent 42 into action after they have been released, when the collating device has been returned onto the platen a suflicient distance to bring the initial line of the work-sheets to the printing point. This includes a pin 43 adjustably mounted on one of the bands 6 in any one of a plurality of openings 44.
. The particular opening determines the stop- -the shaft 33 and thereby permit the pressure feed roll spring to return the pressure feed rolls to their gripping position with relation to the platen 1.
A shield guide 47, Fig. 3, is warped around the under side of the platen 1, so as to guidethe fold 16 around the platen 1. This guide 47 forms a continuation of the plate 12, so that the flap 20'will pass properly around the platen 1. The guide 47 is sectional, so aS to extend between the sections of the feed rolls 26 and 27, and thus insure the flaps 18, 19 and 20 being smoothed out in passing around the platen 1.
In Fig. 5 the fold 16 is shown as applied to the collating device of the form shown in my application No. 180,530. In this form the sheets are assembled at the rear of theplaten instead of at the front and are assembled leadin edge downward. This requires the assem ling of the work-sheets in the manner in which they would ordinarily be inserted on the platen, and they will be brought to the printing point after assembling by a forward rotation of the platen. In this form the bands are similar to the other form, except that but one spring-actuated lazy tong is used and the bands are drawn around the platen by a loop 48 formed therein. The fold 16 is similarly secured to the bands so as to pass around the platen.
It will thus be seen that a. plurality of work-sheets of different character can be assembled in a pack with differently located lines in register with each other, so as to have the same subject-matter copied on difthe flaps 18, 19 and 20. The flap 20 insures the collapsing of the flaps 18 and 19 on the back 17 of the fold, and thus insures the work-sheets being held in their position on p the studs 21.
Variations may be resorted-to Within the scope of the invention, and portions of the imprm'ements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim: 7
1. The combination with a platen, of a flexible supporting means passing aroundsaid platen, and a fold secured to said flexible supporting means so as to travel therewith around said platen, and including a back with flaps secured thereto to overlap the margins of the work-sheets placed upon the back, so as to maintain them in position in traveling around the platen.
2. The combination with a platen, of flexi-. ble supporting means wrapped around said platen, and a fold secured to said flexible supporting .means so as to travel therewith around the platen, said flold including a back With side flaps and an end flap secured to said back, said end flap overlapping said side flaps, so as to automatically flatten said side flaps on said back on passing around said platen.
3. The combination with a platen, of a flexible support passing around said platen, and a fold secured to said support including a back, side flaps integral with said back and a position parallel with said back soas to include between the back and the flaps worksheets assembled in the fold, and impaling studs located on said fold for securing work-.

The combination with a platen, of a flexible support extending around said platen, a fold secured to said flexible support so as to travel with said support around said platen, said fold including a back, side flaps having perforations therein capable of being bent parallel to said back so as to include work-sheets between said back and said sideflaps, and studs on theback of said fold extending through said perforations in said flaps when the latter are folded onto said back.
6. The combination with a platen, of a pair of bands wrapped around the ends of said platen, and a fold secured to said bands at its ends and'extending from hand to band so as to travel with said bands around said platen, said fold includin a back and flaps moved to a position parallel with said back in passing around the platen with said bands. 1
7. The combination with a platen, of a flexible support passing around said platen, and a fold secured to said flexible support, said fold including a back and a flap integral with said bath at the lower margin of said fold, said flap normally extending parallel to said back for a considerable distance from the lower margin of the fold and being provided with a vbent-out portion having a crease line connection with the major portion of the flap, so as to extend parallel to the back of the fold in passing around the platen and automatically opened out when said fold is withdrawn from the platen.

The combination with a platen, of a flexible support passing around said platen, and a fold secured to said flexible support, so as to travel around said platen, said fold comprising a back, side flaps integral with said back, and extending to a point short of the bottom margin of the fold, and a flap integral with the lower 'margin of' the back, and extending a considerable distance from the lower margin parallel with the back, said lower flap having a crease line, whereby the upper portion thereof will spring away fromsaid back, the upper portlon of said flap overlying said side flaps, so as to automatically fold said'side flaps with said back when said fold passes around said platen.
9. The combination with a platen, of a pair of bands wrapped around said platen, and a collating device carried by said bands, said collating device comprising pointed collating studs on which work-sheets may be mounted, a flap to overlap the margins of the work-sheets, and a, second flap to overlap said first-mentioned flap tohold the latter in position while it is being fed around said platen.
10. The combination'with a platen, of a pair of bands wrapped around said platen, and a collating device on said bands, said collating device comprising collating pins adapted to pierce work-sheets which may be mounted on said collating device, and a flap to overlap the margins of the work-sheets, said pins being effective to hold the work-- sheets in position on said collating pins, and said flap being effective to hold the worksheets on said pins while the collating device is being fed around said platen.
11. The combination with a platen, of a flexible supporting means mounted so as to pass around said platen, and a flexible worksheet holder secured to said supporting means so as to travel therewith around said platen, said holder including a back having a side flap secured thereto to overlap the marginsof work-sheets placed" upon said back, so as to maintain them in position while traveling around the platen.
12. The combination with a platen, of a flexible supporting means mounted for movement about said platen, and a flexible work-sheet holder secured to said supporting means so as to travel therewith about said platen, said holder comprising aback havmg a side flap and an end flap secured thereto, said end flap being capable of overlapping said side flap, so as to flatten-said side flap against the work-sheets placed upon said back, as said holder is carried around said platen. i
13. The combination with a platen, of a flexible support mounted for movement about said platen, a flexible work-sheet holder secured to said support so as to travel therewith about said platen, said holder comprising a back and a side flap capable of being bent to a position parallel with said back against the margins of worksheets when placed in position in said holder, and impaling' studs located on said holder for securing the work-sheets thereto.
14. The combination with a platen, of a flexible support mounted for movement about saidv platen, a flexible worksheet holder secured to said support, so as to travel therewith about said platen, said holder including a back, a side flap having perforations therein and capable of being bent parallel to said back against the margins of work-sheets inserted between sald back and said flap, and studs on the back of said holder so located as to extend through said work sheets and the perforations in said flap when the latter is folded against the margins of said work-sheets.
