CALVIN B.. WAID, or BIRMINGHAMALABAMA.
SEGMENTAL Gmini-BAR. Y'
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 17, 1919;
Application led August 16, 1918. Serial No. 250,210.
To all whom z't may concern.' p Y Be it known that I, CALVIN R. WAID, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Birmingham, in the county of J efferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful` Improvements in 'Segmental Grate-Bars, of which the followin is a specification. Y
his invention -relates to grate bars which are composed of segments so designed that they can be readily assembled and interlocked upon a common supporting elementv and which will permit broken segments to be replaced without requiring the removal or` renewal of the whole grate bar.
The chief object of my invention is to simplify and perfect the manner of mounting the grate bar segments upon a common support which is preferably in the form of a single bar which the bases of the segment straddle and to which they are interlocked. When segments are damaged or broken blank repair segments can be inserted at any point or points and provision is made for locking such repair segments iii place at any point on the bar without delay or expense.
YIt is a further objectof my invention to cast the segments so that all drilling and machine work is reducedto a minimum both in the supporting bar and segment bases as the end segments will 'carry the trunnions for the grate bar and alone are keyed or bolted to the end ofthe supporting bar. The bar as initially assembled Will have its segment bases interlocked by lugs or bosses which will prevent the displacement of intermediate segments after they are assembled in position and the end segments are made fast to the bar. This improved manner of assembling the. bar avoids the use ofl side straps and bolts such as are necessary in the grate bars described in my Letters Patents Nos. 1,151,746, 1,175,094, and 1,195,301. The repair segments and preferably all segments underhang the bar vs0 that alining and registering notches in the abutting faces of their bases will form holes through which keys or bolts can Vbe inserted so as to pass under the supporting bar and permanently lock repair segments in` place after insertion.
h fy invention further comprises the novel details of construction and arrangements of parts, which in their preferred embodiments only are illustrated inv theV accompanyingl l drawings, in" which Figure 1 is'a vside view of a grate bar with its intermediate section'lbroken away and A with a blank segment inserted and'secured in place. v
Y K 60 Fig. 2 is asectional view taken onthe line Fig'v 3 is* a Plan' View 0f a standard' in#Y1 termediate segment.
'Similar reference numerals refer to simi-V lar parts throughout "the drawings. lAs illustrated, the gratebar comprises end segments vl, standard intermediate segments' 2, 'blank repair segments 3 and shaker arm segments 4. All of these segments are'provided with similar iire heads 5 which may be of anysuitable design orshape for the duty required of the grate'in question but which preferably havethe surface curvature shown. The bases 6 .oftheend segments 1 have cast thereon a laterally extended trunnion 7. Below the trunnion the base is provided with a vertical slot 8 opening through its bottom and having parallel side lwalls.
spaced to receive and fit snugly over the bar 9 forming the main supporting element on which thesegments yare assembled. The base of each end segment has opposite holes 10 provided in its center and adapted tore-l ceive a key 11l which passes through the adjacent'end of the bar and securethe end segment permanently in place thereon. The 'base preferably extends substantially below the lower edge of the bar and in' .its lower portion on each side I provide alining semicircular key grooves 12, thesel grooves being provided von both side faces of the base. 1 The inner side of the endsegment bases which are wider than the fire heads are provided with downwardly sloping top surfaces 13 and in its inner side face each has a boss 14 on one side and a receiving recess 15 on the other side. f
The standard intermediate segments 2 are provided with side bases 16 which come flushv overhead with the lower adj acent edge of the surfaces 13 on the end segments 1 and which are provided with the slot 10 and the semiside, the bosses onrthe opposite sides bein-g diagonally disposed. rlhe bases for the repair segments 3 are similar in every respect to the standard segments except they are devoid of the bosses 14 and may be cast that wL y or their bosses may be chipped olf. In
like manner the segments 4 are similar to the` standard intermediate segments except thaty one side of the base extends kdownwardly to form a shaker connection 16 which'is oset from one side so that the adjacent segment 4 will have the proper space for the invention between the two connections of the connecting bar 17 which is secured to the shaker connections by a bolt 18 passing therethrough and through the bar.
In assembling the barv initially one end is keyed on Ythe bar and the intermediate segments. are then mounted and shifted into interlocked relationship by the engagement A of the bosses of each in the receiving recesses The of the two adjacentl segment, bases.V
shaker segments fare inserted at the. proper Y place andfinally the other end segment is mounted and keyed in position so as to hold1 all the segments securely interlocked by their bosses between the end. segments. The' bar is thus held assembled by means of only two end bolts. In the event a segmentbecomes damaged or broken it is removed preferably by splitting its base and the bosses on the. two adjacent segments which project into the cavity left by the removal of the damaged segment are chipped off, or
they may be replaced by segments` free of l such bosses. Then a blank segment can be stood that this is not essential as in the event4 of the breakage of a segment the broken segment and the two adjacent standard segments may be removed and three blank repair segments inserted and interlocked to each other by two eotter keys inserte( through the holes formed by their registering grooves 12. y
After one blank repair segment has been inserted this can be again easily removed to Copies of this patent may bek obtained for permit the insertion, of standardsegments needed-to replace other broken segments in the same bar.
My bar is capable of ready assembly and of easy repair; is practically devoid of any machine -work and can be made up of standard bars and a minimum :number of stock parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a segmental grate bar, a bar, a plu-r rality Iof grate segments having bases slotted to straddle and project below said bar, there being alining registering notches in the abutting faces of adjacent segments' adapted vto form holes disposedbelow the bar, and keysy adapted to be inserted through said holes and to pass under said bar to tie the adjacent segment bars thereon.
QM In a segmental grate bar, a bar, a plurality of grate segments having bases slottedv to straddle and project below said bar7 there beingalining registering notches in the abut-` ting faces of adjacentsegments adapt-edto form holes disposed below said bar, keys adapted to beV inserted through said holes and to pass under saidbar to tie the adjacent` segment bars thereon, and means to fasten the end segments on said bar.
3. `In segmental grate bar, a bar, a p lurality of Vgrate segments having bases mount-y ed on Said bar and provided with bossesiand.
recesses adapted to interlock on abutting bases,a blanksegment free of bosses and having a base slotted to straddle and project below said bar, and a locking key inserted between said blank segmentnbase and an adj acentsegment-and passing under said bar to lock the blank segmentthereon.
4. In a segmental grate bar, a bar, a plurality of grate segments having bases mounted on said barand provided Vwithbosses and` recesses adapted to lnterlock on abuttingv segment bases7 a plurality of` segments7 one of which is free of bosses on both sides and the adjacent two ofvwhich are free of bosses on one side, said latter three segments hav# ing their bases projecti'ig below said bar, there being alining registering notches in the abutting` surfaces of said three segments below the lower level of said bar, and locking' keys inserted through said registering notches to hold said three segments assembled on they bar.
In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature.
