FIG. 5.
ammvtoz n rii JOHN MARIANYGH, OF LANUKE, ALBERTA, CANADA.
COMBINED TABLE AND BED.
Application filed December 12, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J oiIN MARIANYGH, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Lanuke, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Tables and Beds, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a bed that is readily convertible into a table, the arrangement being such that thetable top will be suitably elevated when the device is employed as a table while the bed frame will be positioned substantially at the usual height above the floor when arranged as a bed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a table bed that possesses great strength but at the same time may be easily and quickly converted from a bed into a table and vice versa, the separate features being so arranged that the bed members will not interfere with the use of the device as a table when in table formation and the table features will not interfere with the employment of the device. as a bed whenever desired.
A still further object is the provision'of an article of furniture serving as a table in thedaytime and a bed for sleeping purposes in the nighttime adapted to be utilized where only a limited amount of space 1s available, the structure being easily manufactured and readily operable when desired for use either as a table or a bed.
With these general objects in View, the invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention set up for use as a bed.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken upon line II-II of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof when positioned as a table.
Fig. 4 is a top plan vlew of the same partially broken away.
Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken upon line V-V of Fig. 3, and
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 3, 1919.
Serial No. 266,461.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the locking means employed with the table.
My invention provides a rectangular frame 10 serving as the main portion of the bed as well as a support for the table top when arranged as a table, said frame having opposite side rails 11 and end rails 12 while a supporting post or leg 13 is proextending through said straps, whereby the frame may be adjusted in height upon the legs 13, it being understood that'the said legs rest upon the floor or other suitable support 15 and preferably have casters 16 upon the lower ends.
A toothed rack 17 is provided upon the inner face of each leg 13 with each of which a pinion 18 is in constant mesh, the said pinions being carried by shafts 19' adjacent the opposite ends of the frame 10 and ex tending through the straps 14. A sprocket wheel 20 is provided upon each of the shafts 19 while an endless s rocket chain 21 passes over said wheels 20, eing crossed at the central portion of the said chain, at which points plain links or connectors 22 are provided in the chain. A crank 23 upon the outwardly projecting end of one of the shafts 19 is adapted to be turned for revolving the pinions 18 in-opposite directions, thereby elevating the frame 10 upon the legs 13 by causing the pinions 18 to travel upwardly on the racks 17. When the frame 10 is in its lowermost position with the device in its bed formation, the pinions rest upon inwardly projectin stops 24: at the lower ends of the racks 1 r A head board 26 is connected by hinges 27 with one of the end rails 12 while a foot 28 is connected to the opposite end rails 12 by means of hinges 29. Springs 30 connect the head and foot boards 26 and 28 with the adjacent end rail 12 of the frame 10 so that upon elevating the said frame to the upward limit of its movement with the top of said frame lying substantially flush with the heads or upper rounded ends 31 of the posts 18, the springs 30 will automatically lower the boards 26 and 28 inwardly for resting flatly upon the top of the frame 10 overrods 34 which connect the heads 31 of the posts 13 together at the opposite ends of the bed. A spring 35 connects one of the rods 33 with the adjacent end rail 12, while a bar 36 connects the rods 33 together centrally, whereby upon elevating the frame 10 to the upward limit of its movement, the latches 32 automatically engage over the rods 34 for maintaining the frame 10 elevated for use as a table until the latches 32 are closed by pulling outwardly upon an extension 37 of the bar 36 which projects from the end rail 12 adjacent the head board 26. Normally positioning leaf springs 35 are also provided engaging the latches 32 adjacent the head board 26.
An ornamental bracket. 38 is hinged to the upper end of each of the boards 26 and 28 adapted for swinging inwardly beneath the level of said boards when the latter are positioned horizontally as a table top as best illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing. A removable central panel is provided for the table top formed in two sections 38 and 39 connected together by hinges 40, while the section 38 is connected by hinges 41 to one of the side rails 11 of the frame 10. The panel 39 is pivoted upon its hinges 40 upon the panel 38 while the panel 38 is swung outwardly and downwardly upon its hinges 41 to a depending position at one side of the frame 10 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. A catch 42 is provided adjacent the free edge of the panel 39 for engaging a recess 43 in the adjacent side rail 11 of the frame 10 when the middle panel is positioned substantially centrally transi ersely of the frame 10 resting upon the adjacent edges of the brackets 38, it being noted that the said brackets 38 are retained perpendicular with respect to the carrying boards 26 and 28 by means of the hinge connections 44 between said brackets and boards. The hinges may be of the type shown in U. S. Patent 544,071, to E. 7-. Philbrook, August 6, 1895. lVhen the sections 38 and 39 are folded, the catch 42 engages a keeper 45 upon the under face of the section 38.
The complete operation of the device will be understood from this detailed description thereof, the device being employed as a bed arranged as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, with the central panel sections 38 and 39 out of the wayat one side of the bed, the crank 23 may be turned for elevating the frame 10 and the boards 26 and 28 will automatically position themselves upon the frame 10 with the brackets 38 depending within the frame. The catch 42 may then be released and the central panel unfolded and swung transversely of the frame 10 upon the brackets 38. lVhile the catch 42 will engage the socket 43 and the latches 32 hook over the top rods 34, upon releasing the latches 32 by pulling outwardly upon the extension 37, the frame 10 will automatically lower of its own weight raising the parts 26 and 28 to their vertical positions at the opposite ends of the frame 10, but if desired the lowering movement of the frame may be controlled by the lever 23 attached to either of the shafts 19. The catch 42 is, however, released and the panels 38 and 39 swung outwardly of the frame 10 prior to the release .of the latches 32 by the extension 37. It will be seen that the abutting edges of the panels 38 and 39 at the ends thereof connected by the hinges 40 assist in holding the panel sections outstretched when resting upon the rails 11 as a central panel for the table top. The head and foot boards 26 and 28 respectively are retained in table top formation by the panel sections 38 and 39 when in position upon the frame 10, which taken together witlrthe latches 32 prevents any accidental lowering of the frame 10 until the panel sections 38 and 39-are opened and the extension 37.0perated for releasing thelatches 32. A table of great strength as well as a spring bedare provided in a unitary structure, each of which may be employed at will While the capability of using the invention asa bed is not at all apparent upon viewing'the device when in its table formation.
What I claim as new is 1. A device of the class described. com- 105 prising a rectangular frame, mounting posts within the corner portions of the frame, means adapted for elevating the. frame upon the posts, head and foot boards hingedto the opposite ends of the frame adapted for 110 automatically closing inwardly upon the top of the frame when the latter reaches its upward limit of movement and a shiftable panel carried by the frame positionedbetween said boards upon the frame when the 115 device is employed as a table.
2. A device of the class described comprising a rectangular frame, mounting posts within the corner portions ofv the frame. means adapted for elevating the frame upon 120 the posts, head and footboards hinged'to the opposite ends of the frame adapted for automatically closing inwardly upon, the top of the frame when the latter. reaches its upward limit of movement, brackets hinged to the free ends of said boards adapted for swinging inwardly perpendi'culareto the boards when the latter are in their table top formation, panel sections hingedlyconnected together and hinged to one side of the frame adapted for transversely positioning between said boards flatly upon the frame and upon the adjacent edges of said brackets providing with said boards a substantially unbroken upper surface.
3. A device of the class described comprising a rectangular frame mounting posts within the corner portions of the frame, means adapted for elevating the frame upon the posts, head and foot boards hinged to the opposite ends of the frame adapted for automatically closing inwardly upon the top of the frame when the latter reaches its upward limit of movement, brackets hinged to the free ends of said boards adapted for swinging inwardly perpendicular to the boards when the latter are in their table top formation, panel sections hingedly conneoted together and hinged to one side of the frame adapted for transversely positioning between said boards flatly upon the frame and upon the adjacent edges of said bracket providing with said boards a substantially unbroken upper surface, the said posts having rounded head portions lying substantially flush with the top of the frame when the latter is at its upper limit of move ment, said rounded heads being adapted to serve as fulcrums upon which the head and foot boards turn. 7
